The American Peach Orchard by F. A. Waugh Pdf

Excerpt from The American Peach Orchard: A Sketch of the Practice of Peach, Growing in North America at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century The rapid specialization of all the fruit-growing industries in North America has made the production of peaches an art by itself. To keep pace with such specialization it has been found expedient to discuss the management of the several fruit crops in separate monographs. Peach growing is now a large and important industry and deserves a book of its own. The demand for such a book has existed for several years, but special difficulties have been experienced in meeting it. The work of preparing such a book was undertaken by the late Charles Wright of Delaware, and by the late Prof. W. G. Johnson of the Orange Judd Company, but both gentlemen died leaving the manuscripts unwritten. The writer has, indeed, experienced many tedious and troublesome delays, but has finally brought the work to completion through the help of many kind friends. In writing this book he has called to his aid a large number of practical peach growers in all parts of the United States and Canada, whose help and advice he wishes most cordially to acknowledge. To interpret properly their wide and varied experience has been the author's prime endeavor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Peach Orchard by Jurmane Michaels Pdf

Peach Orchard is beautiful story about growing up in a community where your neighbors are like family and family was is the glue. Travel back in time down the countryside along a dusty gravel roads and reminisce on a time when things were much simpler and life was more sublime. A time when the connective tissue was strong, where you knew all your kinfolks. Thinking back on a time when social gatherings were like an everyday, all day family reunion. Whether it was visiting grand momma'nem, going to church and being reprimanded by the ushers for chewing gum in the sanctuary, or grooving to your favorite tunes at a backyard barbecue, these are the precious moments that one will hold dear and cherish forever. Even though there may have been many fond memories way back when, not all of them were good. Some of those days were dark, filled with heartache and pain. Times that tested every square inch of the "fortress" walls of the community and at times threatened to crumble the very foundation of the family. Some of the things that happened while young, carved scars so deep that if left debilitating effects on many individuals well into adulthood. It does indeed take a village to raise a child, to protect the mind of the innocent and restore hope that even in the darkest hour there is still light at the end of the tunnel.Journey through the Orchard with a young African American boy named Kel. Travel through the innocent eyes of this young man as he goes through the uncertain crucible of boyhood, to the fiery trials that hardens him into manhood. It is the lessons he learns from dealing with the people and situations that ultimately forms his metal. From surviving a violent, abusive dad to coping with mental illness in the family. Having a wise-cracking, alcoholic but funny aunt to an adulterous, seductive town tramp and her comical beau. This wide ranging kaleidoscope of characters at times shook the boundaries of this community, but still helped solidify the core that secured the heart of this town. Peach Orchard is truly about the people, with all their problems great and small, you will find a way to love them all. People do make the world go around. Through all the many ups and downs, the hurt and the betrayals, and even tragedies the strength of this community will find a way. Today we are experiencing some of the most unprecedented and trying times of our lives. Forced to live in isolation from our family and friends, we are realizing the importance of community and how much we really do rely on each other. Hopefully it's a lesson in togetherness and hopefully something we will never again take for granted. Peach Orchard is life and life is the journey. So grab your milk and cookies, turn on your light lamps and enjoy a hayride through the countryside. Welcome to the Orchard!

Sickles at Gettysburg by James A. Hessler Pdf

“Sickles is as dividing a figure in Civil War history as there is. In his masterful work . . . Hessler . . . puts him out there with all his wrinkles” (Confederate Book Review). Winner of the Robert E. Lee Civil War Roundtable of Central New Jersey’s Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award Winner of the Gettysburg Civil War Roundtable’s Distinguished Book Award By licensed battlefield guide James Hessler, this is the most deeply-researched, full-length biography to appear on this remarkable American icon. No individual who fought at Gettysburg was more controversial, both personally and professionally, than Major General Daniel E. Sickles. By 1863, Sickles was notorious as a disgraced former Congressman who murdered his wife’s lover on the streets of Washington and used America’s first temporary insanity defense to escape justice. With his political career in ruins, Sickles used his connections with President Lincoln to obtain a prominent command in the Army of the Potomac’s 3rd Corps—despite having no military experience. At Gettysburg, he openly disobeyed orders in one of the most controversial decisions in military history. Hessler’s critically acclaimed biography is a balanced and entertaining account of Sickles colorful life. Civil War enthusiasts who want to understand General Sickles’ scandalous life, Gettysburg’s battlefield strategies, the in-fighting within the Army of the Potomac, and the development of today’s National Park will find Sickles at Gettysburg a must-read. “The few other Sickles biographies available will now take a back seat to Hessler’s powerful and evocative study of the man, the general, and the legacy of the Gettysburg battlefield that old Dan left America. I highly recommend this book.”—J. David Petruzzi, coauthor of Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart’s Controversial Ride to Gettysburg
