Sorolla: The Masterworks by Blanca Pons-Sorolla Pdf

A new survey of the best works by the elusive and spectacular Spanish Impressionist Joaquín Sorolla. Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla’s major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla’s life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist’s previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.

Joaquín Sorolla by Blanca Pons-Sorolla Pdf

A painter of vast pieces in his early days - works intended for salons and national exhibitions - Joaquin Sorolla (Valencia, 1863-1923) very soon developed a style of outdoor painting of his own which, though not connected stylistically with the Barbizon School, nevertheless pursued the same postulates, as a result of which he came to be known as a Spanish Impressionist painter. He began to devote himself entirely to this practice in 1900, painting landscapes, views of cities, studies of nature, seascapes and garden scenes in which he demonstrated his tremendous skill in capturing the effects of light. Joaquin Sorolla is unquestionably an essential book for anyone interested in the Spanish Impressionists, and the most complete work of reference on this artist from Valencia. It includes an insightful and in-depth essay by Blanca Pons-Sorolla and some 300 reproductions of his most important pieces.

Sorolla and the Paris Years by Blanca Pons-Sorolla,Véronique Gerard-Powell,Dominique Lobstein,Maria Lopez Fernandez Pdf

Published on the occasion of a major retrospective, this gorgeous new survey focuses on the paintings related to the years Joaquín Sorolla spent in Paris. A native of Valencia, Spanish Impressionist Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) first went to Paris in 1885 as a young artist at the age of twenty-three. He exhibited at the international salons, winning the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle in 1900, and in 1906, he exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Georges Petit, one of the principal galleries of the Impressionists. The exhibition was a resounding success and helped establish Sorolla’s international reputation. Known for his vigorous compositions, unusual color palette, and loose, radiant brush strokes, Sorolla’s sun-drenched landscapes, beach scenes, and luminous portraits even impressed such contemporaries as Claude Monet. Richly illustrated and with newly researched essays by noted scholars, this important book reveals much new information about Sorolla’s activities and relationships with other artists in Europe. Included are more than one hundred paintings reflecting the artist’s career, from his early work in Paris in which the influence of the French Impressionists is clearly evident, to the distinctive pictures that reflect his mature and celebrated style.

Sorolla: Painted Gardens by Anonim Pdf

Valencian master Sorolla's Impressionist paintings depict the most beautiful gardens and architecture in Spain. Like Claude Monet's celebrated plein air landscapes at Giverny, the series collected in this book represents among the best-loved examples of Joaquín Sorolla's (1863-1923) work, and a window into the Spanish painter's quest to capture the essence of a garden. Described by Monet as "the master of light," Sorolla and his landscapes, formal portraits, and historically themed canvases drew comparisons to contemporary American painter John Singer Sargent. Sorolla had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic for grand scenes of Spanish life when he began a personal series of garden works, presented completely for the first time in this publication. Painted at the palaces of La Granja and the Alcázar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, and at the painter's home in Madrid, these Impressionist works allowed Sorolla to apply his signature loose brushwork and training as a photographer's lighting assistant to gardens and the sculptures, architecture, and sitters that frame and animate them. Sorolla depicted reflections in fountains and pools, the sunlight dappling his glamorous sitters, sprays of orange blossoms, and shaded blue-and-white tile as he endeavored to render the radiant peace of a summer afternoon.

Joaquin Sorolla by Blanca Pons-Sorolla Pdf

"Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) was one of the greatest natural painters of all time. Born in Valencia, this Spanish painter was active mainly in his native town and in Madrid. He was a prolific and popular artist, working on a wide range of subjects - genre, portraits and landscapes - and his bravura style marked by luminous coloring and vigorous brushwork earned him a considerable reputation throughout Europe and America. He was also a highly sought after portraitist." "Early in the career Sorolla mainly portrayed history and social scenes before developing his own plein-air painting from the 1900s onwards, painting townscapes, garden scenes, nature studies, seascapes and beach scenes with an extraordinary ability of capturing light. From 1901 to 1905 he created 500 works adhering to his ideal of 'natural painting'. From these paintings came the body of work shown in a series of shows in Paris, Berlin, London, New York, Saint Louis and Chicago. Sorolla was then commissioned to create a multi-panelled work entitled Visions of Spain for the Hispanic Society in New York. He laboured on this from 1912-19 after which time he painted very little. He died in 1923." "This new, extensively illustrated monograph, written by the artist's great granddaughter, provides a comprehensive overview of his work including a fully illustrated chronology."--BOOK JACKET.

Joaquin Sorolla by Anonim Pdf

Key works by the Spanish Impressionist painter of landscapes, portraits and monumental, historically themed canvases Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was one of the most beloved and appreciated artists of his day. In 1908, he was hailed as "the greatest living painter in the world" for his extraordinary technique and the pleasing nature of his subjects, rising to a level of fame that very soon went well beyond national borders. Joaquín Sorolla: Painter of Light recounts the extraordinary stylistic development of this ambitious and determined painter, who made art his reason for living. Sorolla's magnificent and passionate artistic journey was one of joy, suffering, satisfaction and research. His main pursuit and innovation in painting was the study of light, rigorously captured from real life and en plein air, gradually evolving into an immediate, spontaneous and sophisticated language. Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) was born in Valencia, Spain, a city to which he returned throughout his life. His fame as a painter was established by 1890, with exhibitions in Munich, Paris, Chicago, Vienna, Venice and Buenos Aires. By 1900, he was considered as the most famous of all living Spanish artists; his work paved the transition from Impressionism to Picasso.
