The Art World Demystified by Brainard Carey Pdf

The Art World Demystified unfolds the confusing and often treacherous terrain of the art world, revealing the inner workings of a system that has few rules but many opportunities. In this volume, artists will find their own questions reflected and addressed, including: •How does an artist penetrate the inner circle of the art world? •How do museums choose exhibits? •How can an artist reach critics and get feedback? •How do artists make a living, and how much can they expect to make? •What are the “rules” of the art world? •Why is it all so mysterious? Author and successful artist Brainard Carey explores these queries and more, giving concise answers and guidance on such issues as talking to curators, navigating suitable promotion, and maintaining motivation, alongside profiles of well-known artists. He enables, and encourages, readers to not only navigate the mysteries of the artist’s career, but also to create their own mythologies by presenting their work in a way that generates interest, questions, and an invitation to the inner circle. Amsterdam-based visual artist and art historian Nick Renshaw (b. 1967, UK) presents a comprehensive history of the world-renowned innovative European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) as it approaches its 50th anniversary. Extensive writings and over 200 historical images tell the history of this remarkable institution where the boundaries of ceramic practice are constantly being expanded. Founded by ceramist Jan Oosterman and curator Bernadine de Neeve in 1969 as a simple place for ceramists to share kilns, by 2015 EKWC had become a cutting-edge CAD/CAM studio with a new 54,000-square-foot studio, providing annually 60 resident artists, designers and architects with 3D-design and 3D-printing facilities. EKWC promotes the innovative use of ceramics in all areas of design and the visual arts. Seven Days in the Art World by Sarah Thornton Pdf

A fly-on-the-wall account of the smart and strange subcultures that make, trade, curate, collect, and hype contemporary art. The art market has been booming. Museum attendance is surging. More people than ever call themselves artists. Contemporary art has become a mass entertainment, a luxury good, a job description, and, for some, a kind of alternative religion. In a series of beautifully paced narratives, Sarah Thornton investigates the drama of a Christie's auction, the workings in Takashi Murakami's studios, the elite at the Basel Art Fair, the eccentricities of Artforum magazine, the competition behind an important art prize, life in a notorious art-school seminar, and the wonderland of the Venice Biennale. She reveals the new dynamics of creativity, taste, status, money, and the search for meaning in life. A judicious and juicy account of the institutions that have the power to shape art history, based on hundreds of interviews with high-profile players, Thornton's entertaining ethnography will change the way you look at contemporary culture.

Consciousness Demystified by Todd E. Feinberg,Jon M. Mallatt Pdf

Demystifying consciousness: how subjective experience can be explained by natural brain and evolutionary processes. Consciousness is often considered a mystery. How can the seemingly immaterial experience of consciousness be explained by the material neurons of the brain? There seems to be an unbridgeable gap between understanding the brain as an objectively observed biological organ and accounting for the subjective experiences that come from the brain (and life processes). In this book, Todd Feinberg and Jon Mallatt attempt to demystify consciousness—to naturalize it, by explaining that the subjective, experiencing aspects of consciousness are created by natural brain processes that evolved in natural ways. Although subjective experience is unique in nature, they argue, it is not necessarily mysterious. We need not invoke the unknown or unknowable to explain its creation. Feinberg and Mallatt flesh out their theory of neurobiological naturalism (after John Searle's biological naturalism) that recognizes the many features that brains share with other living things, lists the neural features unique to conscious brains, and explains the subjective–objective barrier naturally. They investigate common neural features among the diverse groups of animals that have primary consciousness—the type of consciousness that experiences both sensations received from the world and affects such as emotions. They map the evolutionary development of consciousness and find an uninterrupted progression over time, without inserting any mysterious forces or exotic physics. Finally, bridging the previously unbridgeable, they show how subjective experience, although different from objective observation, can be naturally explained.
