The Arts and Crafts of Ancient Egypt by W. M. Flinders Petrie Pdf

This present handbook is intended to aid in the understanding of Egyptian art, and the illustrations and descriptions are selected for that purpose only. The history of the art would require a far greater range of examples, in order to illustrate the growth and decay of each of the great periods; whereas here only the most striking works of each period are shown, in order to contrast the different civilisations. The origins and connections of the art in each age are scarcely touched, and the technical details are only such as are needed to see the conditions of the art. The archaeology of the subject would need as wide a treatment as the history, and these subjects can only appear here incidentally. It should be noticed that the divisions of artistic periods are often not the same as those of political history. Politically, the history divides at the XVIIth dynasty with the fall of the Hyksos, and at the XXIInd dynasty with the rise of the Delta government. But artistically the changes are under Tahutmes I, when Syrian influences broke in, and under the XXVIth dynasty, when the classical Greeks began to dominate the art.

Searching for Ancient Egypt by University of Pennsylvania. Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology,David P. Silverman,Edward Brovarski Pdf

Lavishly illustrated in color, this book presents a spectacular collection of archaeological and artistic treasures covering the extent of Egyptian art from the Predynastic Period of the fourth millennium B.C. to the Greco-Roman period of the fourth century A.D. The volume features more than 130 objects ranging from architectural elements of a royal palace and funerary chapel to delicate jewelry and textile fragments, and contains many objects never previously shown in print. In an introductory essay David P. Silverman documents major expeditions to sites in Egypt and Nubia and summarizes the new information gleaned about ancient Egyptian civilization. Donald B. Redford provides a general treatment of ancient Egypt history. The objects themselves are introduced with concise essays by recognized Egyptologists: Edward Brovarski, Rita E. Freed, Arielle P. Kozloff, David O'Connor, Edna R. Russmann, William K. Simpson, and Josef W. Wegner. The Art in Ancient Egypt by Georges Perrot,Charles Chipiez Pdf

The Art in Ancient Egypt in two volumes is a study of Egyptian arts and of their connection with the national religion and civilization written by French archeologists and historians Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez. The aim of the work was to trace the course of the great evolution which culminated in the age of Pericles and came to an end in that of Marcus Aurelius. That evolution forms a complete entirety – an unbroken chain of cause and effect uniting the two eras. Using carefully selected examples authors prove that the art of the Egyptians went through the same process of development as those of other nationalities, earlier and later ones, and that the unique quality of the sculptures and paintings of the Nile Valley was a persistent affinity to simplification, which comes in part from the habit created by writing the hieroglyphic and in part from the materials used.

Ancient Egypt in the Modern Imagination by Eleanor Dobson,Nichola Tonks Pdf

Ancient Egypt has always been a source of fascination to writers, artists and architects in the West. This book is the first study to address representations of Ancient Egypt in the modern imagination, breaking down conventional disciplinary boundaries between fields such as History, Classics, Art History, Fashion, Film, Archaeology, Egyptology, and Literature to further a nuanced understanding of ancient Egypt in cultures stretching from the eighteenth century to the present day, emphasising how some of the various meanings of ancient Egypt to modern people have traversed time and media. Divided into three themes, the chapters scrutinise different aspects of the use of ancient Egypt in a variety of media, looking in particular at the ways in which Egyptology as a discipline has influenced representations of Egypt, ancient Egypt's associations with death and mysticism, as well as connections between ancient Egypt and gendered power. The diversity of this study aims to emphasise both the multiplicity and the patterning of popular responses to ancient Egypt, as well as the longevity of this phenomenon and its relevance today.
