‘The Auction Block’ by Rex Beach is ‘A Novel of New York Night Life’ that will be enjoyed by fans of Truman Capote’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. In this story, Lorelei Knight’s parents are anxious to make their fortune by profiting from her beauty. So, they send her to New York to become a member of a "girl show". The over-indulgent son of a millionaire, Bob Wharton, soon falls in love with Lorelei, and when she learns her father is ill and in need of money, she marries the man for whom she has no love. Bob’s father, however, cuts off his allowance, forcing him to go to work, while Lorelei’s wholesomeness influences him to become a better man. Bob is doing well until Lorelei’s brother leads him to temptation and he slips back into his old ways, and Lorelei begins to consider leaving New York.

Excerpt from The Auction Block: A Novel of New York Life Isn't that just my luck? And me a Democrat for twenty years. There's nothing in politics, Jimmy. His son James smiled crookedly, with a languid tolerance bespeaking amusement and contempt. James prided him self upon his forbearance, and it was rarely indeed that he betrayed more than a hint of the superiority which he felt toward his parent. Politics is all right, provided you're a good picker, he said, with all the assurance of twenty-two, but you fell off the wrong side of the fence, and you're sore. An incisive new collection of poetry on political and contemporary themes I’m made of murderers I’m made Of nobodies and immigrants and the poor and a whole / Family the mother’s liver and her lungs In The Gilded Auction Block, the acclaimed poet Shane McCrae considers the present moment in America on its own terms as well as for what it says about the American project and Americans themselves. In the book’s four sections, McCrae alternately responds directly to Donald Trump and contextualizes him historically and personally, exploding the illusions of freedom of both black and white Americans. A moving, incisive, and frightening exploration of both the legacy and the current state of white supremacy in this country, The Gilded Auction Block is a book about the present that reaches into the past and stretches toward the future.

Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry by Leanne Shapton Pdf

A love story told in the form of an auction catalog. Auction catalogs can tell you a lot about a person -- their passions and vanities, peccadilloes and aesthetics; their flush years and lean. Think of the collections of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Truman Capote, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In Leanne Shapton's marvelously inventive and invented auction catalog, the 325 lots up for auction are what remain from the relationship between Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris (who aren't real people, but might as well be). Through photographs of the couple's personal effects -- the usual auction items (jewelry, fine art, and rare furniture) and the seemingly worthless (pajamas, Post-it notes, worn paperbacks) -- the story of a failed love affair vividly (and cleverly) emerges. From first meeting to final separation, the progress and rituals of intimacy are revealed through the couple's accumulated relics and memorabilia. And a love story, in all its tenderness and struggle, emerges from the evidence that has been left behind, laid out for us to appraise and appreciate. In an earlier work, Was She Pretty?, Shapton, a talented artist and illustrator, subtly explored the seemingly simple yet powerfully complicated nature of sexual jealousy. In Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris—a very different yet equally original book—she invites us to contemplate what is truly valuable, and to consider the art we make of our private lives.
