The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) by J. R. Baumes Pdf

Excerpt from The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 4 Man is an interpreter, a reader of signs. His one ability and business is to understand the meaning of what he sees and hears and touches and conceives, and to use in further interpretation and action what he thus acquires. Man can not see the forces of gravity and light and heat; but he can see and feel the moving, illuminated, and bum ing objects; the rest, by experiment and reasoning, is interpretation. Man can not see the spirit of his brother man - its intelligence, passion, energy; but he can see the changing features of the face and gestures of the body; the rest, by consciousness and experience, is interpretation. Man can not see God - his power and wisdom and grace; but he can perceive the phenomena of nature, of conscious ness. Of history, through which He manifests himself whose goings-forth are from everlasting; the rest, by faith, con science, reason, reverence, and love, is interpretation. Truth, for us, is the conformity of our conceptions with the facts of existence. The facts are prior to us and inde pendent Of us. We can not essentially change them, nor mold them to our notions and will. We must take them as we find them, and apprehend them as they are, if we wish to gain a knowledge of their qualities and the use of their energies. This is but another way of saying again that man is an interpreter, not a creator, and that all knowledge is interpretation. The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 6 (Classic Reprint) by J. R. Baumes Pdf

Excerpt from The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 6 Still classical culture has come to bear a narrowed mean ing, and to imply, in the thought of those who use the expression, discipline in Latin and Greek. In that narrowed sense of the expression Iwrite it in my title, and frankly undertake to suggest a certain much-needed application of simple common sense to the discussion of the question involved. The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 8 (Classic Reprint) by J. R. Baumes Pdf

Excerpt from The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 8 OF all European nations, the English have shown great est genius for healthy political organization, for government at once free and stable. No other people has so steadily or so successfully resisted tyranny; none has suffered less from revolutions. And it is highly noteworthy that these results have been reached by persistent use of the forms of law, wholly apart from mere experiment with theories of govern ment. Political theories and theorists there have been in England, with influence nowise slight; but their guidance has been followed soberly, with due regard to the necessarily practical character of good constitution-building. The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 5 by J. R. Baumes Pdf

Excerpt from The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 5: 1883 It has heretofore been universally supposed that he and his party became members of the original English Church at Amsterdam, and that he was expelled from that Church on account of his Anabaptist opinions. This view is appar ently based on a passage in a book by Francis Johnson, in which he says: About thirteen years since, this Church, through persecution in England, was driven to come into these countries. Awhile after they came hither divers of them fell into the heresies of the Anabaptists - which are too common in these countries - and so persisting, were excommunicated by the As Johnson wrote in 1606, the very year that Smyth went to Amsterdam, and as he refers to what had taken place some time before, his reference can not be to Smyth, but to some unknown party Of Anabaptists.
