In the winter of 1861, Union armies had failed to win any significant victories over their Confederate counterparts. The Northern populace, overwhelmed by the bloodshed, questioned whether the costs of the war were too high. President Lincoln despondently wondered if he was going to lose the Union. As a result, tension was incredibly high when Union hero Ambrose Burnside embarked for coastal North Carolina. With the eyes of the nation and world on little Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks, Burnside began his amphibious assault on the beaches and earned a victory that shifted control of Southern waters. Join author and historian Michael Zatarga as he traces the story of the crucial fight on Roanoke Island.

Battle of Roanoke Island by Harold Lee Wise Pdf

During the first year of the Civil War, the Union set its sights on the lightly defended Outer Banks of North Carolina. This is the story of the February 1862 invasion of Roanoke Island and the Confederate attempts to oppose the invasion with rag-tag infantry, a "mosquito fleet" navy, and antique artillery. It was one of the key early Civil War battles in North Carolina.

Time Full of Trial by Patricia C. Click Pdf

In February 1862, General Ambrose E. Burnside led Union forces to victory at the Battle of Roanoke Island. As word spread that the Union army had established a foothold in eastern North Carolina, slaves from the surrounding area streamed across Federal lines seeking freedom. By early 1863, nearly 1,000 refugees had gathered on Roanoke Island, working together to create a thriving community that included a school and several churches. As the settlement expanded, the Reverend Horace James, an army chaplain from Massachusetts, was appointed to oversee the establishment of a freedmen's colony there. James and his missionary assistants sought to instill evangelical fervor and northern republican values in the colonists, who numbered nearly 3,500 by 1865, through a plan that included education, small-scale land ownership, and a system of wage labor. Time Full of Trial tells the story of the Roanoke Island freedmen's colony from its contraband-camp beginnings to the conflict over land ownership that led to its demise in 1867. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, Patricia Click traces the struggles and successes of this long-overlooked yet significant attempt at building what the Reverend James hoped would be the model for "a new social order" in the postwar South.

Private Osborne, Massachusetts 23rd Volunteers by Frederick M. Osborne Pdf

In 1861, at 15 years old, Fred Osborne joined the Massachusetts 23rd Regiment. In three months he was in the Burnside Expedition, fighting in the first amphibious battle of U.S. history, the Battle of Roanoke Island. It was a needed Union victory early in the war. His regiment also fought at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, New Bern, Goldsboro, Kinston and Charleston. His lively letters and other eyewitness accounts are woven into a unique Civil War story--his personal war and the war going on around him become one narrative. Fred Osborne wrote about battles and campaigns, and life in camp and on the march. He kept up with events in the war, commenting on actions by President Lincoln and generals he knew about: Sherman, Grant, McClellan, Burnside, Foster, Hunter and Butler.

The Orphan's Home Mittens by Aunt Fanny Pdf

Excerpt from The Orphan's Home Mittens: And George's Account of the Battle of Roanoke Island It was now the second week in January, 1862. One evening, Aunt Fanny came to see the children. In an instant, she was surrounded, and hugged, and squeezed, and kissed, till she was certain they had loved a pound or two off her weight; but then they put it on again before she left, by making her laugh so at their capers and talk, that she said she thought she could feel the fat growing; so that made it all square and comfortable. "I read such a charming little poem in the 'Independent' some weeks ago," said Aunt Fanny. "Tell it to us! we want to hear it!" cried the children.
