Famous Modern Ghost Stories (Classic Reprint) by Dorothy Scarborough Pdf

Excerpt from Famous Modern Ghost Stories Ghosts have always haunted literature, and doubtless always will. Specters seem never to wear out or to die, but renew their tissue both of person and of raiment, in marvelous fashion, so that their number increases with a Malthusian relentlessness. We of to - day have the ghosts that haunted our ancestors, as well as our own modern revenants, and there's no earthly use trying to banish or exorcise them by such a simple thing as disbelief in them. Schopenhauer asserts that a belief in ghosts is born with man, that it is found in all ages and in all lands, and that no one is free from it. Since accounts vary, and our carli est antecedents were poor diarists, it is 'difficult to establish the apostolic succession of spooks in actual life, but in literature, the line reaches back as far as the primeval picture writing. A study of animism in primitive culture shows many interest Ing links between the past and the present in this matter. And anyhow, since man knows that whether or not he has seen a ghost, presently he'll be one, he's fascinated with the subject. And he creates ghosts, not merely in his own image, but according to his dreams of power. The more man knows of natural laws, the keener he is about the supernatural. He may claim to have laid aside superstition, but he isn't to be believed in that. Though he has discarded witch craft and alchemy, it is only that he may have more time for psychical research; true, he no longer dabbles with ancient magic, but that is because the modern types, as the ouija board, entertain him more. He dearly loves to traffic with that other world of which he knows so little and concerning which he is so curious. Real Ghost Stories (Classic Reprint) by William T. Stead Pdf

Excerpt from Real Ghost Stories The contents of the two Volumes, slightly cur tailed, were, a few years later, brought out as one book, but the three volumes have long been out of print and are practically unknown to the present generation. I remember when I was a child my Father read some of these stories aloud to us as he was making his collection and I remember, too, how thrilled and awed we were, and how at times they brought a creepy feeling when at night I had to mount many flights of stairs to my bedroom at the top of the house. Black Spirits &White, a Book of Ghost Stories (Classic Reprint) by Ralph Adams Cram Pdf

Excerpt from Black Spirits &White, a Book of Ghost Stories When in May, 1886, I found myself at last in Paris, I naturally determined to throw myself on the charity of an old chum of mine, Eugene Marie d'Ardeche, who had forsaken Boston a year or more ago on receiving word of the death of an aunt who had left him such property as she possessed. I fancy this windfall surprised him not a little, for the relations between the aunt and nephew had never been cordial, judging from Eugene's remarks touching the lady, who was, it seems, a more or less wicked and witch-like old person, with a penchant for black magic, at least such was the common report. Accredited Ghost Stories (Classic Reprint) by T. M. Jarvis Pdf

Excerpt from Accredited Ghost Stories "That the dead are seen no more," said Imlac, "I will not undertake to maintain against the concurrent and unvaried testimony of all ages and of all nations. There is no people rude or learned, among whom apparitions of the dead are not related and believed. This opinion, which perhaps prevails as far as human nature is diffused, could become universal only by its truth. Ghost Stories by Felix Octavius Carr Darley Pdf

Excerpt from Ghost Stories: Collected With a Particular View to Counteract the Vulgar Belief in Ghosts and Apparitions But ghosts have appeared to more than one person at a tinie -how then P Can he exist in the imagina tion of two persons at once? That is not probable, and we doubt the authentic accounts of ghosts ap pearing to more than one at a time. The stories we are about to tell will show, however, that in a great many instances several persons have thought that they saw ghosts at the same time, when, in fact, there was no ghost in the case; but substantial flesh and blood and bones. The Best Ghost Stories 1800-1849 by Edgar Allan Poe,Washington Irving,Nathaniel Hawthorne,Sir Walter Scott,Wilhelm Hauff,Joseph Sheridan le Fanu Pdf

Ghost stories became very popular in the first half of the 19th century and this collection by Andrew Barger contains the very scariest of them all. Some stories thought too horrific were published anonymously like "A Night in a Haunted House" and "The Deaf and Dumb Girl." The later story is collected for the first time in any anthology since its original publication in 1839. The other ghost stories in this fine collection are by famous authors. "The Mask of the Red Death," by Edgar Allan Poe; "A Chapter in the History of a Tyrone Family," by Joseph Sheridan le Fanu; "The Spectral Ship," by Wilhelm Hauff; "The Old Maid in the Winding Sheet," by Nathaniel Hawthorne; "The Adventure of the German Student," and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," by Washington Irving; as well as "The Tapestried Chamber," by Sir Walter Scott. As he has done with a number of other books, Andrew Barger has added his scholarly touch to this collection by including story backgrounds, annotations, author photos and a foreword titled "All Ghosts Are Gray." Buy the book today and be ready to be scared reading the best ghost stories of the first half of the 19th century.
