The Birds of Africa by Emil K. Urban,C. Hilary Fry,Stuart Keith Pdf

"The Birds of Africa is the first comprehensive handbook on the entire avifauna of the African continent. It covers breeding birds in full detail, with sections on range and status, description, field characters, voice, general habits (including migration), food, and breeding biology. Non-breeding visitors are covered more briefly, with emphasis on their status and behavior while in Africa. Color plates show all species in almost all plumages -- male, female, immature, and non-breeding. Beautifully executed, they combine "field guide" attention to detail and diagnostic features with the realism of natural poses. Line drawings illustrate behavioral and identification points in the text. Geographical ranges are shown in maps which distinguish breeding and non-breeding distributions and in many instances also show regional variations in abundance. References and a discography complete the volume."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

A Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson Pdf

For lovers of Alexander McCall Smith, Nicholas Drayson introduces the charming Mr Malik and the East African Ornithological Society in A Guide to the Birds of East Africa. Reserved, honourable Mr Malik. You wouldn't notice him in a Nairobi street - except, perhaps, to comment on his carefully sculpted comb-over - but beneath his unprepossessing exterior lie a warm heart and a secret passion. Not even his closest friends know it, but Mr Malik is head-over-heels in love with the leader of the local Tuesday-morning bird walk, Rose Mbikwa. Little can he imagine the hurdles that lie before him. Even as he plucks up the courage to ask for Rose's hand, thieves, potential kidnappers and corrupt officials, not to mention one particularly determined love rival, seem destined to thwart Mr Malik's chances. Will an Indian gentleman in the heart of Africa be defeated by the many obstacles that stand between him and his heart's desire? Or will honour and decency prevail? 'A funny, ingenious and touching love story' Joanne Harris, The Times 'A delightful comedy... It invites comparison to The No.1 Ladies' Detective A gency books, but it's original and, if anything, has more depth' Daily Mail 'Sweet, charming and utterly wonderful on the subject of birds' Metro Nicholas Drayson was born in England and has lived in Australia since 1982, where he studied zoology and a PhD in 19th century Australian natural history writing. He has worked as a journalist in the UK, Kenya and Australia, writing for publications such as the Daily Telegraph and Australian Geographic. He is the author of three other novels, Confessing a Murder, Love and the Platypus and A Guide to the Beasts of East Africa.

Despite its exceptional coverage, this guide is compact enough to use in the field, and follows the standard field guide format, with texts and range maps appearing opposite the color plates.

The Birds of Africa, Vol. 5 by G. E. Shelley Pdf

Excerpt from The Birds of Africa, Vol. 5: Comprising All the Species Which Occur in the Ethiopian Region; Part II The present instalment completes the fifth volume of the late Captain Shelley's great undertaking. Soon after the appearance of the first part of the present volume in 1906, the author was struck down by a sudden illness - a stroke of paralysis - and although he lived on till November 29, 1910, he was unable to continue his labours. The completion of his work, however, was constantly in his thoughts, and shortly before his death I was asked by Mrs. Shelley if I would undertake this task. It was not, however, until afterwards, in the middle of last year, that the arrange ments could be made for doing so. Mrs. Shelley then handed over to me all the mss. And the proofs of four sheets which were already in type. The plan and arrangement of the present part is mainly that of the late Captain Shelley, and my task has been to supply descriptions of some of the species, many of which were very incomplete, to revise the whole in the light of the additional facts and discoveries of the last six years, and to pass the work through the press. I am indebted to my, father, Mr. P. L. Sclater, for having read through the proofs for me, and to Mr. Ogilvie Grant for much help and many facili ties afforded to me in the Bird Room at the British Museum. Conference of the Birds by John Heilpern Pdf

Conference of the Birds is John Heilpern's true story of an extraordinary journey. In December 1972, the director Peter Brook and an international troupe of actors (Helen Mirren and Yoshi Oida among them) left their Paris base to emerge again in the Sahara desert. It was the start of an 8,500-mile expedition through Africa without precedent in the history of theater. Brook was in search of a new beginning that has since been revealed in all his work--from Conference of the Birds and Carmen to The Mahabharata and beyond. At the heart of John Heilpern's brilliant account of the African experiment is a story that became a search for the miraculous.
