The Lakotas and the Black Hills by Jeffrey Ostler Pdf

The story of the Lakota Sioux's loss of their spiritual homelands and their remarkable legal battle to regain it The Lakota Indians counted among their number some of the most famous Native Americans, including Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Their homeland was in the magnificent Black Hills in South Dakota, where they found plentiful game and held religious ceremonies at charged locations like Devil's Tower. Bullied by settlers and the U. S. Army, they refused to relinquish the land without a fight, most famously bringing down Custer at Little Bighorn. In 1873, though, on the brink of starvation, the Lakotas surrendered the Hills. But the story does not end there. Over the next hundred years, the Lakotas waged a remarkable campaign to recover the Black Hills, this time using the weapons of the law. In The Lakotas and the Black Hills, the latest addition to the Penguin Library of American Indian History, Jeffrey Ostler moves with ease from battlefields to reservations to the Supreme Court, capturing the enduring spiritual strength that bore the Lakotas through the worst times and kept alive the dream of reclaiming their cherished homeland.

Exploring with Custer by Ernest Grafe,Paul Horsted Pdf

General George Armstrong Custer's journey to the Black Hills in 1874 was better documented than any other military expedition of the Old West. Photographer W.H. Illingworth recorded superb views of the landscape and several camps, and at least fifteen men wrote diaries, reports or newspaper dispatches brimming with detail. This book blends the 1874 photos with modern photos taken at the same places, along with selections from the written accounts, to paint a unique portrait of everyday life along the trail."Exploring With Custer" also includes a point-by-point guide to the Expedition's route within the Black Hills. The maps, directions and GPS readings lead you to the campsites and down the trail, with stops for many of the photo sites and even for ruts left by Custer's wagons. The choice is yours--use the photographs and accounts to relive the Black Hills Expedition from the comfort of home, or take this book into the field and listen to the stories of Custer and his men as you walk the very ground they first walked in 1874.Great reading for anyone interested in the military exploration, early photography, or the history of the American West.

Deadwood Trail Dust by Patricia A. Campbell Pdf

1876 was a momentous year during the Black Hills Gold Rush. The author's research on the famous Cheyenne-Black Hills Stage and Express Route, led her to numerous maps and descriptions about the trail, with dashes and dots, and a few geographical features. To better understand these stage stations and her ancestor's role as shotgun messengers, the author began to document what can still be seen today. Using the locations in this book, you can see where many of the stations used to be situated, including old horse corrals, telegraph wire roads, relics of possible stations, and numerous trail ruts made by heavy freight across the prairie. Campbell relates, "While it's been difficult to know exactly where the wheels on the famous coach rolled all of the time, it is possible to see many aspects of the Deadwood Stage route using satellite imagery based on early maps. All the credit goes to those dedicated individuals who preserved the trail years ago before there were computers. Thankfully, we no longer need to use a surveyor's measuring wheel and give dimensions in chains to study the old trail."
