The Elder Edda by Andy Orchard Pdf

Compiled by an unknown scribe in Iceland around 1270, and based on sources dating back centuries earlier, these mythological and heroic poems tell of gods and mortals from an ancient era: the giant-slaying Thor, the doomed Völsung family, the Hel-ride of Brynhild and the cruelty of Atli the Hun. Eclectic, incomplete and fragmented, these verses nevertheless retain their stark beauty and their power to enthrall, opening a window on to the thoughts, beliefs and hopes of the Vikings and their world.

The Poetic Edda by Jackson Crawford Pdf

"The poems of the Poetic Edda have waited a long time for a Modern English translation that would do them justice. Here it is at last (Odin be praised!) and well worth the wait. These amazing texts from a 13th-century Icelandic manuscript are of huge historical, mythological and literary importance, containing the lion's share of information that survives today about the gods and heroes of pre-Christian Scandinavians, their unique vision of the beginning and end of the world, etc. Jackson Crawford's modern versions of these poems are authoritative and fluent and often very gripping. With their individual headnotes and complementary general introduction, they supply today's readers with most of what they need to know in order to understand and appreciate the beliefs, motivations, and values of the Vikings." --Dick Ringler, Professor Emeritus of English and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison

The Voluspa by Ivy Mulligan,Lauren Ramirez Pdf

The Völuspá embodies many of the fundamental magical elements encoded in Norse mythology from the pre-Christian, early middle ages. Scholars have described the Völuspá as a kind of 'sacred text' of pagan Scandinavian religion, composed during a time when Pagan beliefs were intended to be eradicated by Christianity. The Codex Regius is the primary source for this brief examination: an ancient manuscript compiled in the mid-thirteenth century by unknown, anonymous authors. The vellum parchment dates from approximately 1270; The text's organization by theme and topic lead some scholars to believe it was copied from earlier sources which no longer exist. Many of the Voluspa's stanzas are quoted or paraphrased in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, composed in the year 1220. The Völuspá is preserved in both the Codex Regius and Hauksbók manuscripts, while parts of it are quoted in Snorri's Prose Edda. The Hauksbók is one of the few medieval Norse manuscripts where the author is actually known. His name was Haukr Erlendsson, and it was partly written by Haukr himself, partly by his assistants. The book contains versions - sometimes the only remaining editions - of many old Icelandic texts. Snorri gives a summary of the Völuspá in his seminal work, Gylfaginning. He was clearly aware of its existence although his version does not contain the last few 'Christianized' stanzas. The Völuspá is regarded as one of the most important primary sources for the study of Norse mythology. Some anonymous editors of the original manuscript appear to have rearranged certain material, however. The oldest manuscript of the Völuspá still in existence dates from 1302 to 1310. The order and number of stanzas varies in each of these sources. The Codex Regius, (Latin for King's Book), contains 29 poems commonly designated by scholars as the Poetic Edda, or Elder Edda. It is the oldest such collection, the best-known of all Icelandic books, and is considered an Icelandic national treasure.

The Poetic Edda by Anonim Pdf

The Poetic Edda comprises a treasure trove of mythic and spiritual verse holding an important place in Nordic culture, literature, and heritage. Its tales of strife and death form a repository, in poetic form, of Norse mythology and heroic lore, embodying both the ethical views and the cultural life of the North during the late heathen and early Christian times. Collected by an unidentified Icelander, probably during the twelfth or thirteenth century, The Poetic Edda was rediscovered in Iceland in the seventeenth century by Danish scholars. Even then its value as poetry, as a source of historical information, and as a collection of entertaining stories was recognized. This meticulous translation succeeds in reproducing the verse patterns, the rhythm, the mood, and the dignity of the original in a revision that Scandinavian Studies says "may well grace anyone's bookshelf."

Poems of the Elder Edda by Anonim Pdf

The great poetic tradition of pre-Christian Scandinavia is known to us almost exclusively though the Poetic Edda. The poems originated in Iceland, Norway, and Greenland between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, when they were compiled in a unique manuscript known as the Codex Regius. The poems are primarily lyrical rather than narrative. Terry's readable translation includes the magnificent cosmological poem Völuspá ("The Sibyl's Prophecy"), didactic poems concerned with mythology and the everyday conduct of life, and heroic poems, of which an important group is concerned with the story of Sigurd and Brynhild. Poems of the Elder Edda will appeal to students of Old Norse, Icelandic, and Medieval literature, as well as to general readers of poetry.

The Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson Pdf

The Prose Edda, also known as the Younger Edda, Snorri's Edda (Icelandic: Snorra Edda) or, historically, simply as Edda, is an Old Norse textbook written in Iceland during the early 13th century. The work is often considered to have been to some extent written, or at least compiled, by the Icelandic scholar, lawspeaker, and historian Snorri Sturluson c. 1220.
