The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore by Ernest Thompson Seton Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore For over twenty-five years I have been giving the talks and demonstrations that are gathered together in this book. Many of them have appeared in magazines or in the "Birch-Bark Roll" that has come out annually for ten years. But this is the first time in which a comprehensive collection has been made of the activities, customs, laws, and amusements that have been developed in my camps. Some of the related subjects I have treated at too great length for enclosure in one book. Of this class are the "Life Histories of Northern Animals," "Animal Stories," "Sign Language" and "Forestry," which appear as separate works. All are merely parts of a scheme that I have always considered my life work, namely, the development or revival of Woodcraft as a school for Manhood. By Woodcraft I mean outdoor life in its broadest sense and the plan has ever been with me since boyhood. Woodcraft is the first of all the sciences. It was Woodcraft that made man out of brutish material, and Woodcraft in its highest form may save him from decay. As the model for outdoor life in this country I took the Indian, and have thus been obliged to defend him against the calumnies of those who coveted his possessions. In giving these few historical extracts to show the Indian character, it must be remembered that I could give hundreds, and that practically all the travelers who saw with their own eyes are of one mind in the matter. Woodcraft and Indian Lore by Ernest Thompson Seton Pdf

At the turn of the twentieth century, an age of booming technology and a rapid reduction of the outdoors, wildlife enthusiast Ernest Thompson Seton called for a renewed interest in outdoor living. If the nation was in need of a dose of nature then, we could certainly benefit from Seton’s expert guidance today. With this book, you’ll learn to: • Build a campfire, dam, or birch basket • Recognize animal tracks, constellations, and all manner of forestry • Spot the differences between poisonous plants and edible berries • Remedy everything from common cuts and wounds to life-threatening snakebites • And much more! Combining scientific knowledge with Native American wisdom and practices, this guide is essential for Boy Scouts, their pack leaders, and any guides leading outdoor treks. It’s also a great read for any outdoors lover who is looking for a fuller experience of nature. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts. Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart Pdf

Finally published in 1917 and coming in at over 450 pages long, Horace Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft Volume II - Woodcraft is the original "Bushcraft" book. Written as it was during the first decades of the 20th Century, it captures and distills Indian lore, knowledge of the pioneers and mountain men and provides a clear link to the American West. This volume is packed with details on primitive skills, edible plants, navigation, minimalist backpacking, wilderness survival and what we would call today bushcraft. Although Kephart had previously published The Book of Camping and Woodcraft in 1906, a decade later, in 1916, he released a much revised and expanded edition. This edition is so extensive that we have had to split it into two separate volumes for easy reading. This volume is an exact replica of the original. Page layout, numbering, table of contents, illustrations and index are identical to the definitive 1917 edition. If you're seeking to get back to basics and learn self-reliance in the outdoors, Horace Kephart is a wonderful teacher. His no-nonsense writing style means that Volume II - Woodcraft is packed to the gunwales with useful, easily understood outdoors wisdom. The interior of this new edition from Ropesend Creek Press is a perfect replica of the original. Page numbering, illustrations, layout, table of contents, index and any footnotes are exactly as they appeared when the original book was published. With this new edition, the book is ready for a new lease of life through a modern readership.
