The British Army, 1783-1802 by John William Fortescue Pdf

Excerpt from The British Army, 1783-1802: Four Lectures Delivered at the Staff College and Cavalry School The four lectures comprised within this volume have been printed at the request of some of the officers or the Staff College and Cavalry School, to whom they were delivered in November Though, from the nature of the subject, there is some repetition in the third and fourth lectures of matter brought forward in the two first, I have decided to print the whole of them as they stand. There may well be young officers who would find the lectures addressed to so critical an audience as the Staff College somewhat heavy, and yet be willing to accept a few fragments of them mingled with the information which appeals more directly to their interest. The British Army 1793-1802 – Four Lectures Delivered At The Staff College And Cavalry School by Hon. Sir John William Fortescue K.C.V.O. Pdf

Sir John Fortescue holds an un-rivalled place among the historians of the British Army, having written the best-known and most comprehensive account of its operations from its foundations in Norman times to the first World War. He may have rivals for certain periods of warface, notable Sir Charles Oman, regarding the Peninsular War, with whom he was friends and shared research, however his breadth and depth of knowledge was unparalleled. Sir John was invited by Colonels Sir Henry Rawlinson and Julian Byng, both would go on to have distinguished careers as Army commanders in the First World War, to lecture at the Staff College and Cavalry School. Although he gave four lectures on the development of the army as a whole and the cavalry in particular, he added two additional essays on the St Lucia campaign of 1776 and the history of the transport and supply. An excellent read by a world famous authority on the subject. Author – Hon. Sir John William Fortescue K.C.V.O. – (28th December 1859 – 22nd October 1933)

The Middlemost and the Milltowns by Brian Lewis Pdf

This book seeks to enrich our understanding of middle-class life in England during the Industrial Revolution. For many years, questions about how the middle classes earned (and failed to earn) money, conducted their public and private lives, carried out what they took to be their civic and religious duties, and viewed themselves in relation to the rest of society have been largely neglected questions. These topics have been marginalized by the rise of social history, with its predominant focus on the political formation of the working classes, and by continuing interest in government and high politics, with its focus on the upper classes and landed aristocracy. This book forms part of the recent attempt, influenced by contemporary ideas of political culture, to reassess the role, composition, and outlook of the middle classes. It compares and contrasts three Lancashire milltowns and surrounding parishes in the early phase of textile industrialization—when the urbanizing process was at its most rapid and dysfunctional, and class relations were most fraught. The book’s range extends from the French Revolution to 1851, the year of the Great Exhibition, which symbolized mid-century stability and prosperity. The author argues that members of the middle class were pivotal in the creation of this stability. He shows them creating themselves as a class while being created as a class, putting themselves in order while being ordered from above. The book shifts attention from the search for a single elusive “class consciousness” to demonstrate instead how the ideological leaders of the three milltowns negotiated their power within the powerful forces of capitalism and state-building. It argues that, at a time of intense labor-capital conflict, it was precisely because of their diversity, and their efforts to build bridges to the lower orders and upper class, that the stability of the liberal-capitalist system was maintained.

Wellington's Two-Front War by Joshua Moon Pdf

Sir Arthur Wellesley's 1808–1814 campaigns against Napoleon's forces in the Iberian Peninsula have drawn the attention of scholars and soldiers for two centuries. Yet, until now, no study has focused on the problems that Wellesley, later known as the Duke of Wellington, encountered on the home front before his eventual triumph beyond the Pyrenees. In Wellington's Two-Front War, Joshua Moon not only surveys Wellington's command of British forces against the French but also describes the battles Wellington fought in England—with an archaic military command structure, bureaucracy, and fickle public opinion. In this detailed and accessible account, Moon traces Wellington's command of British forces during the six years of warfare against the French. Almost immediately upon landing in Portugal in 1808, Wellington was hampered by his government's struggle to plan a strategy for victory. From that point on, Moon argues, the military's outdated promotion system, political maneuvering, and bureaucratic inertia—all subject to public opinion and a hostile press—thwarted Wellington's efforts, almost costing him the victory. Drawing on archival sources in the United Kingdom and at the United States Military Academy, Moon goes well beyond detailing military operations to delve into the larger effects of domestic policies, bureaucracy, and coalition building on strategy. Ultimately, Moon shows, the second front of Wellington's "two-front war" was as difficult as the better-known struggle against Napoleon's troops and harsh conditions abroad. As this book demonstrates, it was only through strategic vision and relentless determination that Wellington attained the hard-fought victory. Moon's multifaceted examination of the commander and his frustrations offers valuable insight into the complexities of fighting faraway battles under the scrutiny at home of government agencies and the press—issues still relevant today.
