THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL by MSG James T. Born, USA, Ret. Pdf

The author is a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the Mekong Delta in 1967. His unit. Mobile Support Team TWO, Detachment Alpha, was a top secret United States Naval Special Warfare team, composed of specially trained personnel from Boat Support Unit One and from SEAL Team's ONE and TWO. In it's inseption, this team was code named "Project Zulu". While a lot of what this group of men did is still classified, their main purpose was to disrupt enemy ambushes of PBR river boats and snatch and grab high ranking enemy officials. This was accomplished by counterambushing the enemy deep within the forbidden reaches of the Mekong Delta and its waterways. The team often remained behind the enemy lines in enemy controlled territory for days disrupting their troop and supply movements. The main motivational factor of wrtiing this book was not to highlight what the author did but to provide the general public and historians a chance to read about the valor and sacrifices that were made by 163 officers and enlisted men, from various points in Vietnam and at varrying time frames. It is a snapshot of the real war, not created in mind by Hollywood or from mistruths often found in other books from those stealing the valor. The author himself is a recepient of The Bronze Star Medal with the Combat Distinguishing Device and feels qualified to speek about the trials and tribulations of those featured in the book. The author served eleven years in the Navy and twelve more years in the Army. He retired as a Master Sergeant E-8. He now lives in Henderson, Nevada with his wife of 40 years..

The Medal of Honor by Dwight S. Mears Pdf

The Medal of Honor may be America’s highest military decoration, but all Medals of Honor are not created equal. The medal has in fact consisted of several distinct decorations at various times and has involved a number of competing statutes and policies that rewarded different types of heroism. In this book, the first comprehensive look at the medal’s historical, legal, and policy underpinnings, Dwight S. Mears charts the complex evolution of these developments and differences over time. The Medal of Honor has had different qualification thresholds at different times, and indeed three separate versions—one for the army and two for the navy—existed contemporaneously between World Wars I and II. Mears traces these versions back to the medal’s inception during the Civil War and continues through the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—along the way describing representative medal actions for all major conflicts and services as well as legislative and policy changes contemporary to each period. He gives particular attention to retroactive army awards for the Civil War; World War I legislation that modernized and expanded the army’s statutory award authorization; the navy’s grappling with both a combat and noncombat Medal of Honor through much of the twentieth century; the Vietnam-era act that ended noncombat awards and largely standardized the Medal of Honor among all services; and the perceived decline of Medals of Honor awarded in the ongoing Global War on Terror. Mears also explores the tradition of awards via legislative bills of relief; extralegislative awards; administrative routes to awards through Boards of Correction of Military Records; restoration of awards previously revoked by the army in 1917; judicial review of military actions in federal court; and legislative actions intended to atone for historical discrimination against ethnic minorities. Unprecedented in scope and depth, his work is sure to be the definitive resource on America’s highest military honor.

Courage in Combat by Richard J. Rinaldo Pdf

These stories of military heroism, focusing on members of the Legion of Valor, offer a sweeping study of courage in service to America. Published in conjunction with the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, Courage in Combat shares the stories of military heroes from the Civil War onward. They are recipients of the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, and the Air Force Cross. Their awards are our nation’s highest military decorations, given only to one in twenty thousand combatants. Among them are sergeants and generals, as well as corpsmen, civilians, engineers, “grunts,” and paratroopers. There are men and women, a mess attendant, aviators, spies and POWs, a cavalry scout, candidates for sainthood, and a president of the United States. The stories of these brave individuals relate personal accounts of heroism, as well as reflections on combat and war. This book also includes a short history of the Legion of Valor, America’s oldest military service organization, and an extensive list of its members, past and present. Courage in Combat explores the concept of courage through the lives, thoughts, and actions of this elite group—most of whom would say, “I was just doing my job.”

Company of Heroes by Eric Poole Pdf

There are many broad studies of the Vietnam War, but this work offers an insight into the harrowing experiences of just a small number of men from a single unit, deep in the jungles of Vietnam and Cambodia. Its focus is the remarkable account of a Medal of Honor recipient Leslie Sabo Jr., whose brave actions were forgotten for over three decades. Sabo and other replacement soldiers in Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry (Currahees), 101st Airborne Division, were involved in intense, bloody engagements such as the battle for Hill 474 and the Mother's Day Ambush. Beginning with their deployment at the height of the blistering Tet Offensive, and using military records and interviews with surviving soldiers, Eric Poole recreates the terror of combat amidst the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. Company of Heroes, now published in paperback tells the remarkable story of how Sabo earned his medal, as Bravo Company forged bonds of brotherhood in their daily battle for survival.
