Superconducting Glass-ceramics In Bi-sr-ca-cu-0: Fabrication And Its Application by Yoshihiro Abe Pdf

High Tc oxide superconductors such as Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) systems are usually fabricated by sintering given mixtures of raw materials. Generally, sintering processing takes a longer heating time and the products are mechanically low strength and cannot be formed into complex shapes such as a coil, a curved fine tube or a fine rod. Another way to produce the ceramics is a glass-ceramic process in which the glasses prepared by melt-quenching are reheated for crystallization. A given mixture of raw materials in BSCCO is easily melted and quenched to form a given shape of glass, while that in YBCO is not glassified. This invaluable book has been written by authors from five countries. It presents a unique way to fabricate superconducting ceramics in BSCCO by glass-ceramic processing.

Superconductivity and Applications by Yi-Han Kao,Hoi S. Kwok,David T. Shaw Pdf

This Proceedings is a collection of papers presented at the Third Annual Conference on Superconductivity and Applications organized by the New York State Institute on Superconductivity. This year the Conference was held at the Buffalo Hilton Hotel on September 19- 21, 1989, with previous meetings on September 28-29,1987, and April 18-20, 1988. As in previous years, this meeting was highly successful, with an attendance of over three hundred researchers participating in lively scientific exchanges and discussions. The high quality of the talks is evident in this Proceedings. The field of high temperature superconductivity has matured considerably since its early days of media frenzy and rapid new discoveries. However, the enthusiasm and pace of research have not slowed down. A much better picture of the nature of high temperature superconductivity, the properties of these new materials and where they may find their eventual use has emerged. Processing techniques, especially thin film deposition, have been perfected nearly to the point of allowing commercial applications. We expect continued phenomenal growth of the field of high temperature superconductivity, both in terms of research and applications for many years to come.

Advances in Superconductivity II by Takehiko Ishiguro,Koji Kajimura Pdf

Since the First International Symposium on Superconductivity (ISS '88) was held in Nagoya, Japan in 1988, significant advances have been achieved in a wide range of high temperature superconductivity research. Although the T c's of recently discovered oxide superconductors still do not exceed the record high value of 125K reported before that meeting, the enrichment in the variety of materials should prove useful to the investigation of the fundamental mechanism of superconductiv ity in these exotic materials. The discovery of the n-type superconducting oxides proved to oppose the previously held empirical fact that the charge carriers in all oxide superconductors were holes. In addition, optimization of the charge carrier density has been established as a technique to improve the superconducting proper ties of the previously known oxide materials. Many new experimental and theoreti cal advances have been made in understanding both the fundamental and the applied aspects of high temperature superconductivity. In this latter area, various new processing techniques have been investigated, and the critical current densities and other significant parameters of both bulk and thin film oxide superconductors are rapidly being improved. At this exciting stage of research in high temperature superconductivity, it is extremely important to provide an opportunity for researchers from industry, academia, government and other institutions around the world to freely exchange information and thus contribute to the further advancement of research.

Advances in Superconductivity IV by Hisao Hayakawa,Naoki Koshizuka Pdf

Five years have passed since the breakthrough in the critical temperature for superconductors. During this period, many superconducting materials have been discovered and developed, and our knowledge of the physical and other properties of oxide superconductors has deepened through extensive and intensive research. This knowledge has advanced superconductivity science and technology from the initial questioning stage to a more developed but still uncertain second stage where research activity in superconductivity now overlaps with fields of application. Generally speaking, science resonates with technology. Science not only complements but also competes with or stimulates technology. New scientific knowledge has triggered the second technological research stage. Much progress has been made in the development of practical devices, encouraging the application of superconductors in areas such as human levitation, a high speed levitated bearing, large current transforming leads, and high frequency devices. This technological progress has increased our understanding of the science involved, such as flux pinning and dynamics, and anomalous long-range superconducting interactions. At this important stage, international cooperation and collaborative projects can effectively sustain aggressive research and development in order to advance superconductivity to the next stages. The ISS Symposium is expected to serve as a venue for increasing our knowledge of superconductivity and for exchanging visions for future research and applications, through the presentation and discus of the latest research results. These proceedings also aim to summarize sion annual progress in high-Tc superconductivity in all fields.

Physics and Materials Science of High Temperature Superconductors, IV by R. Kossowsky,Miroslav Jelinek,Josef Novák Pdf

Five questions dominated the ARW on Physics and Materials Science of High Temperature Superconductors, of which this book forms the permanent record. Briefly, these are: (i) How close are we to a unified theory? The consensus is that we are not. (ii) Flux pinning: can it be achieved in bulk materials? Still an open question. The following three questions are related. (iii) Can grain boundary contributions be brought under control? (iv) What is the real requirement for purity and general chemistry control? (v)What is the practical outlook for bulk products - tapes and wires? One of the conclusions is that the geometry and dimensions in thin films are the key parameters that facilitate the realization of high current densities and, consequently, their commercial application. On the other hand, the very large number of poorly understood microstructural, chemical and mechanical variables involved in the preparation of bulk materials are currently prohibiting large scale commercialization of wires and tapes.

The New Superconducting Electronics by H. Weinstock,Richard W. Ralston Pdf

This volume is based on the proceedings of the NATO-sponsored Advanced Studies Institute (ASn on The New Superconducting Electronics (held 9-20 August 1992 in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire USA). The contents herein are intended to provide an update to an earlier volume on the same subject (based on a NATO ASI held in 1988). Four years seems a relatively short time interval, and our title itself, featuring The New Superconducting Electronics, may appear somewhat pretentious. Nevertheless, we feel strongly that the ASI fostered a timely reexamination of the technical progress and application potential of this rapid-paced field. There are, indeed, many new avenues for technological innovation which were not envisioned or considered possible four years ago. The greatest advances by far have occurred with regard to oxide superconductors, the so-called high transition-temperature superconductors, known in short as HTS. These advances are mainly in the ability to fabricate both (1) high-quality, relatively large-area films for microwave filters and (2) multilayer device structures, principally superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions, for superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) magnetometers. Additionally, we have seen the invention and development of the flux-flow transistor, a planar three-terminal device. During the earlier ASI only the very first HTS films with adequate critical-current density had just been fabricated, and these were of limited area and had high resistance for microwave current.

Phase Transitions and Relaxation in Systems with Competing Energy Scales by T. Riste,David Sherrington Pdf

Systems with competing energy scales are widespread and exhibit rich and subtle behaviour, although their systematic study is a relatively recent activity. This text presents lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute reviewing the current knowledge and understanding of this fascinating subject, particularly with regard to phase transitions and dynamics, at an advanced tutorial level. Both general and specific aspects are considered, with competitions having several origins; differences in intrinsic interactions, interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic effects, such as geometry and disorder; irreversibility and non-equilibration. Among the specific physical application areas are supercooled liquids and glasses, high-temperature superconductors, flux or vortex pinning and motion, charge density waves, domain growth and coarsening, and electron solidification.

Laser Processing: Surface Treatment and Film Deposition by J. Mazumder,O. Conde,R. Vilar,W. Steen Pdf

Synthesis of nonequilibrium metallic phases has been an area of great interest to the materials processing community since early 1960. Inherent rapid cooling rates in laser processing are being used to engineer non-equilibrium microstructures which cannot be rivaled by other processes. This lecture will discuss the phenomena involved and its application in designing materials with tailored properties. What is non-equilibrium Synthesis? This is a synthesis method to produce binary or higher order materials where kinetics of the pro cess affects the transport of the constituent elements during phase transformation resulting in a composition or crystallographic configuration which is different from what is observed when the elements arranges themselves with the lowest possible Gibbs Free energy, which is the equilibrium condition. Figure 1 illustrates the phenomena. Phase diagram under equilibrium condition is illustrated by the solid line whereas the no-equilibrium phase diagram is represented by the dotted line. One can observe the shrinkage of the phase field under non-equilibrium condition. Any alloy composition between the solidus lines of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase diagram will be a non equilibrium alloys with extended solid solution.
