The Carian Language by Ignacio-Javier Adiego Lajara Pdf

This handbook provides a complete and updated view of our current knowledge about Carian, one of the Indo-European languages spoken in ancient Anatolia. The decipherment of the Carian alphabet has only recently made it possible to analyze Carian inscriptions and to classify the Carian language linguistically. The book covers all major topics of research on Carian: the direct and indirect sources with an edition of the Carian inscriptions following a new classification system, the history of the decipherment, the Carian alphabet, and the phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic features of the language. It includes an annotated Carian glossary. The volume concludes with a special appendix on Carian coins and legends by Koray Konuk that will be of particular interest to specialists in ancient numismatics.

Hellenistic Karia by Carbon Jan-Mathieu van Bremen Riet Pdf

The conference on which the present volume is based took place in Oxford in the summer of 2006. It brought together linguists, archaologists, epigraphists, numismatists and historians and allowed them to exchange ideas about a period of major transition in Karian history: the fourth century and the two centuries after Alexander. This was first a period of great starapal visibility and presence, but then alsol of intense civic engagement and increased political awareness among Karian communities. The symbiotic relationship between the islands of the Dodekanese, in particular Rhodes and Kos, and the coastal regions of Karia forms another major theme. Finally, a number of papers pick up on a major recent trend in the study of Anatolian culture, namely the investigation of cross-cultural Greeak-Anatolian interactions in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages and their echoes in later periods.

The Circassian Allies of Troy by Selçuk Bağlar Pdf

PROLOGUE This book is based on Homer’s books Iliad and Odyssey. While Iliad describes the war of the peoples of Achaea and Troia, Odyssey tells the journey of king Ulysseus, who participated in the Trojan war, to the Caucasus, the homeland of his ancestors, and to the Land of the Dead there. This work is divided into two parts. The first chapter discusses the main tribes that supported the Trojan king Priam and their historical relations with the Caucasus. Here the attention was focused on the Thracians, Thraco-Phrygians, Pelasgians, Celts, Mysians, Libyans, Lydians, Carians, and other related tribes who supported the king of Troy, Priam. In the second chapter Homer’s Odyssey is studied. In this book, Homer described the journey of the king of Argos, Ulysseus (Odysseus), who returned to his homeland after the Trojan War. Although it is generally believed that Ulysseus made this voyage in the Mediterranean basin, in our opinion, this voyage took place in the Black Sea basin. I am deeply indebted to Dr. Nilgün Elam for a rigorous pre-reading and editing the Turkish version as well as its English version of this book. She also dedicated her time to checking the quotations from the ancient Greek texts and controlling the related terminology. I am extremely grateful to Mr. Mehmet Gönen for translating the Turkish text into English. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Mr. Hakan Candemir for the technical support in the preparation of the e-book. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Enes Özkan for dedicating his technical skills to the design of the cover of the book. I wish you a good reading … (Balkar) Selçuk Bağlar March 2023 Van/Turkey

Studies in the languages and language contact in Pre-Hellenistic Anatolia by Federico Giusfredi,Zsolt Simon Pdf

This volume focuses on contacts between Anatolian languages within and outside Anatolia. The selected essays, written by members of ongoing research projects on Anatolian languages, present case studies from both the first and second millennia. These include etymological and morphophonological investigations within the framework of Graeco-Anatolian contacts, as well as a critical essay on the possible Anatolian-Etruscan contacts. Alongside strictly linguistic analysis, the essays cover different aspects of cultural contacts (the origin of the word for ‘salt’ in Luwian), toponyms (in Lycia), and religion (the god called King of Kaunos), and are introduced with a detailed overview of the origins of the Anatolian linguistic landscape.

Miletos, the Ornament of Ionia by Vanessa Barrett Gorman Pdf

Situated on the southwest coast of modern Turkey, Miletos stood for centuries as one of the paramount cities in the Hellenic world, a gateway between the East and West. It became especially famous as the most prolific mother city in Greek history, sending out at least forty-five known primary and secondary settlements into the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, while at home developing into an intellectual and artistic center and one of the birthplaces of Western science and philosophy. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there, the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos, the Ornament of Ionia, Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern, integrated history of the city, collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B.C.E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city, demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there, and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence, Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy, oligarchy, tyranny, and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. Providing a detailed and up-to-date account of the development of one of the major urban centers of Asia Minor, Gorman's book will engage classicists, historians, and Near Eastern specialists. Vanessa B. Gorman is Associate Professor of History, University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
