Organizational Corruption in the Asia Pacific by Tim G. Andrews,Chris Rowley Pdf

Though corruption exists wherever there is organized human life, reports continue to show markedly higher levels of, for example, bribery, kickbacks, cronyism and nepotism across the Asia Pacific area – particularly as compared to the ‘developed’ Anglo-European West. Despite the prolonged and multiple attempts to combat corruption across the region, especially in the wake of the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997–2000, the challenges for business organizations in corporate Asia remain arguably as formidable as ever. Business corruption in Asia continues to affect the image, behaviour, performance and management of companies – both local and foreign – in the region. Against this backdrop, this fresh collection of research sheds new insight into the antecedents, manifestations and consequences of corruption in a changing Asian business landscape – as well as efforts to prevent, manage and redress it. This book will be of interest to those interested in international business, especially in the Asia Pacific region, and in business ethics. It was originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

The Changing Face of Retailing in the Asia Pacific by Elizabeth Howard Pdf

Retailing in the countries of Asia Pacific is changing dramatically. Changes which took decades, even centuries, elsewhere are happening in a few years. The growth of larger firms and the arrival of international retailers are changing the business landscape, bringing the consistent supply and presentation of wider ranges of goods to consumers, and leading to the development of new kinds of retail stores and modern shopping malls, often in new locations. All of these developments are important for economic growth and for consumers and their lifestyles, They raise questions for governments about foreign investment, about social and environmental change, and about the fate of traditional retailers. This book examines the trends, seeking to understand how far they are global and how local circumstances affect developments. International retailers have spread across the region, but not always successfully. Studies in several countries look at their processes of growth and some of the reasons for success and failure. A review of changing regulation across the region suggests regulators should be concerned to avoid the problems of overconcentration of retail power, and country studies reflect on the effects of regulation as well as cultural and other influences on change. This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Leadership in East Asia by Chris Rowley,Ingyu Oh Pdf

This book compares and contrasts leadership in Japan, South Korea and China, examining the impact of globalization on leadership styles and trends. Presenting some of the most recent findings in leadership studies in these three countries, the collection explores the power relationship between political and business leaders; employer-employee relationships and pro-social behaviour; the measurement of effective leadership; the relationship between leadership and corporate success; the survival of private firms in a tightly controlled or socialist market; and the evolution of leadership styles in the transition from state-owned to semi-private. Although many studies have offered explanations of East Asian economic and corporate success, this book presents empirical evidence to explain the leadership styles in Japan, South Korea and China, and provides a fresh outlook for those studying business and leadership in the region. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Asia Pacific Business Review.

Corruption, Social Sciences and the Law by Jane Ellis Pdf

The problem of corruption, however described, dates back thousands of years. Professionals working in areas such as development studies, economics and political studies, were the first to most actively analyse and publish on the topic of corruption and its negative impacts on economies, societies and politics. There was, at that time, minimal literature available on corruption and the law. The literature and discussion on bribery and corruption, as well as on the negative impact of each and what is required to address them, particularly in the legal context, are now considerable. Corruption and anti-corruption are multifaceted and multi-disciplinary. The focus now on the law and compliance, and perhaps commercial incentives, is relatively easy. However, corruption, anti-corruption and the motivations for them are complex. If we continue to discuss, debate, engage, address corruption and anti-corruption in our own disciplinary silos, we are unlikely to significantly progress the fight against corruption. What do terms such as 'culture of integrity', 'demand accountability', ‘transparency and accountability’ and ‘ethical corporate culture’ dominating the anti-corruption discourse mean, if anything, in other disciplines? If they are meaningless, what approach would practitioners in those other disciplines suggest be adopted to address corruption. What has their experience been in the field? How can the work of each discipline contribute to the work of whole and, as such, improve our work in and understanding of anti-corruption? This book seeks to answer these questions and to understand the phenomenon more comprehensively. It will be of value to researchers, academics, lawyers, legislators and students in the fields of law, anthropology, sociology, international affairs, and business.

Overcoming the Corruption Conundrum in Africa by Anzanilufuno Munyai Pdf

This book adopts a holistic approach to identifying what could be done to surmount the corruption conundrum in the African continent. It acknowledges the objective reality of corruption in Africa, and identifies primary solutions to the issue. The volume takes a socio-legal approach in order to reveal the nature and extent of corruption, and suggests that solutions can be found simply by interrogating how society reacts to it. In conjunction with this, the book identifies and critiques constraints in the formation of a definitive definition of corruption. As shown here, although it is critical for African states to develop anti-corruption strategies, the solution to the problem requires an understanding of the significance of political will, and how the lack thereof has led to the endurance of corruption in Africa.

This book presents a comprehensive analysis of contemporary issues in international trade and economic development. Emphasising the significance of economic development within policymaking, the book covers important issues like the provisioning of public goods, its implication in a liberalised regime, crime and corruption, skilled–unskilled wage inequality, income distribution and unemployment, environmental regulation and role of educational capital and informal sector. The volume deals with the impact that different aspects of international trade and investment are likely to have on the above-mentioned areas. The book will be of invaluable interest to postgraduate students, scholars and researchers of development economics, international economics and labour economics and to those working on theoretical research on applications of general equilibrium trade models in developing countries.

Building Brands in Asia by Tim Andrews,Wilson Chew Pdf

In a global business environment characterized by volatility and change, the formation of enduring relationships with consumers is paramount, but also notoriously difficult. Developing a unique brand personality is increasingly recognized as a key method to achieving the goal of customer loyalty. Focusing on the creation, development and management of brands in the world’s most dynamic, diverse and challenging business environment, Building Brands in Asia challenges the assumption that the continuing success of global brands in Asia is a given. The first part examines the challenge multinational corporations face in balancing brand consistency with local effectiveness. In the second part, attention shifts to Asian company brands, where the focus on branding has been relatively muted until now. Through a variety of sector and country contexts – from facilities management to football clubs, places to pop bands, home appliances to home weaving - we narrate simply and clearly the value, meaning, auditing, aligning, extending and architecture of brands from the likes of Haier, Ah Yee Taung, Axis Bank, OCS, Caltex, Manchester United and Thai Airways in markets as diverse as Japan, Laos, Korea and Singapore. Replete with anecdotes, interviews and case studies, Andrews and Chew provide an insightful, detailed and timely examination for all those interested in today’s primary corporate preoccupation set in the world’s most exciting marketplace.

Corruption Prevention and Governance in Hong Kong by Ian Scott,Ting Gong Pdf

This book analyses central questions in the continuing debate about success factors in corruption prevention and the efficacy and value of anti-corruption agencies (ACAs). How do ACAs become valued within a polity? What challenges must they overcome? What conditions account for their success and failure? What contributions can corruption prevention make to good governance? And in what areas might they have little or no effect on the quality of governance? With these questions in mind, the authors examine the experience of Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), widely regarded as one of the few successful examples of an ACA. The book is grounded in an analysis of ICAC documents and surveys, the authors’ survey of social attitudes towards corruption in Hong Kong, and interviews with former officials.
