The Psalter for Christian Worship, Revised Edition by Michael Morgan Pdf

We lift up the psalms to God as our prayers. We borrow the language of these ancient texts, and they become our works. We are not secondhand recipients of Gods word but communicants actively in conversation with God. What seems to set the Psalms apart from the rest of Scripture is their sacramental nature, their unique ability to mold and transform the believer. The Psalter for Christian Worshipreclaims the Psalms for congregational worship with new texts set to familiar hymnal tunes. This collection, for worship leaders, musicians, and congregations, will inspire both corporate and private devotions.Features include: The Old Testament flavor of the Psalter is retained with new sensitivity to imagery and inclusive language; all 150 psalms have been converted into hymns of reasonable length to be sung in church; an index of suggested hymn tunes is included; and an index for liturgical use is also provided.

The Christian Use of the Psalter by Rev. A. R. Whitham Pdf

This little book, based on three Lectures delivered to the S. Paul's Lecture Society in January, 1908, is not intended so much for the scholar as for the plain man who goes to Church and loves the Prayer Book, but finds the Psalms sometimes puzzling. They are certainly the most difficult, though the most characteristic, part of the daily offices of the Church. What has been attempted in these Lectures is not to explain them in detail, but to suggest the broad lines of interpretation which seem always to have been in the mind of the Church in her use of the Psalter. A few additional helps have been suggested in the Notes. The Christian use of the Psalter is as old as Christianity itself. The new-born Catholic Church, returning from her earliest conflict with the kingdoms of this world, found the most natural expression of her faith and her need in the words of the 2nd Psalm: Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples imagine vain things? The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against His Anointed. (Acts iv. 25, 26, R.V.) Praying the Psalms in Christ by Laurence Kriegshauser O.S.B. Pdf

Written centuries before Christ, the Psalms of the Hebrew Bible have been prayed by Christians since the founding of the Church. The early church fathers expounded the psalms in the light of the mystery of Christ, his death and resurrection, and his saving redemption. In this book, a Benedictine monk examines the Christian praying of the Psalms, taking into account modern and contemporary research on the Psalms. Working from the Hebrew text, Fr. Laurence Kriegshauser offers a verse-by-verse commentary on each of the one hundred and fifty psalms, highlighting poetic features such as imagery, rhythm, structure, and vocabulary, as well as theological and spiritual dimensions and the relation of psalms to each other in the smaller collections that make up the whole. The book attempts to integrate modern scholarship on the Psalms with the act of prayer and help Christians pray the psalms with greater understanding of their Christological meaning. The book contains an introduction, a glossary of terms, an index of topics, a table of English renderings of selected Hebrew words, and an index of biblical citations. Praying the Psalms in Christ will be welcomed by students of theology and liturgy, by priests, religious, and laypeople who pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and by all Christians who seek to pray the Psalms with greater profit and fervor.

A Pathway Into the Psalter by William Binnie Pdf

"A highly valuable work. It is not an exposition, but can readily be used as such, for it possesses a good index to the passages treated of. Dr. Binnie reviews with great skill and intense devotion the various sacred poems contained in the Book of Psalms, and gives the general run and character of each one. His work is unlike any other, and supplies a great desideratum." - C.H. Spurgeon, from 'Commenting & Commentaries' "In the early part of the twenty-first century, we are inundated with works on the Psalms, both for an academic, and for a popular, audience. In addition, reprints of some of the old classics on the Psalms, such as Spurgeon's 'Treasury of David' are readily available. However, there is one nineteenth century work on the Psalms that is of great value to the preacher that has apparently not been reprinted since the late nineteenth century, the book noted above. It is, as the subtitle suggests, divided into three sections. The first deals with the historical development of the book, from the time of Moses (Psalm 90) down to the post-exilic period. The second section deals with the teachings, or as we would more likely say today the theology, of the Psalms. This includes very helpful treatments of the various ways in which the Messiah is set forth in the Psalms, as well as personal and social religion in the Psalms. In addition, Binnie treats the issue of the imprecatory Psalms in a useful manner. The final section traces the history of the use of the Psalms in both the Jewish and the Christian church." - Dr. Ben Shaw, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

Psalter for the Christian People by Gordon Lathrop,Gail Ramshaw Pdf

The increasing desire among Christians to pray in inclusive language has resulted in the publication of this inclusive language psalter. The editors have selected the 1979 Book of Common Prayer as the basis for their psalter. Techniques for changing all the non-inclusive language to inclusive language were carefully wrought and judiciously applied, in keeping with common sense, biblical scholarship, and the ancient Hebrew liturgical principle that holds in high respect the majesty of God's name. Every effort has been made to render the lines in a flowing, euphonious manner, well phrased for chanting. Since different communions practice variant methods of chanting, this volume includes an essay which offers instruction in four methods of pointing these psalms.
