Cineaste on Film Criticism, Programming, and Preservation in the New Millennium by Cynthia Lucia,Rahul Hamid Pdf

Digital technology and the Internet have revolutionized film criticism, programming, and preservation in deeply paradoxical ways. The Internet allows almost everyone to participate in critical discourse, but many print publications and salaried positions for professional film critics have been eliminated. Digital technologies have broadened access to filmmaking capabilities, as well as making thousands of older films available on DVD and electronically. At the same time, however, fewer older films can be viewed in their original celluloid format, and newer, digitally produced films that have no "material" prototype are threatened by ever-changing servers that render them obsolete and inaccessible. Cineaste, one of the oldest and most influential publications focusing on film, has investigated these trends through a series of symposia with the top film critics, programmers, and preservationists in the United States and beyond. This volume compiles several of these symposia: "Film Criticism in America Today" (2000), "International Film Criticism Today" (2005), "Film Criticism in the Age of the Internet" (2008), "Film Criticism: The Next Generation" (2013), "The Art of Repertory Film Exhibition and Digital Age Challenges" (2010), and "Film Preservation in the Digital Age" (2011). It also includes interviews with the late, celebrated New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael and the critic John Bloom ("Joe Bob Briggs"), as well as interviews with the programmers/curators Peter von Bagh and Mark Cousins and with the film preservationist George Feltenstein. This authoritative collection of primary-source documents will be essential reading for scholars, students, and film enthusiasts.

Third World Film Making and the West by Roy Armes Pdf

This is the fully comprehensive account of film production in the Third World. Although they are usually ignored or marginalized in histories of "world cinema." Third World countries now produce well over half of the world's films. Armes places this huge output in a wider context, examining the forces of tradition and colonialism that have shaped the Third World. In addition to charting filmic developments too little known in Europe and the United States, the book calls into question many of the assumptions that shape conventional film history. It stresses the role of distribution in defining and limiting production, queries simplistic notions of independent "national cinemas," and points to the need to take social and economic factors into account when considering authorship in cinema. Above all, the book celebrates the achievements of a mass of largely unknown film makes who, in difficult circumstances, have distinctively expanded our definitions of the art of cinema.

THE ITALIAN CINEMA BOOK is an essential guide to the most important historical, aesthetic and cultural aspects of Italian cinema, from 1895 to the present day. The Berlin School by Rajendra Roy,Anke Leweke,Thomas Arslan,Valeska Grisebach,Benjamin Heisenberg,Christoph Hochhäusler,Nina Hoss,Dennis Lim,Katja Nicodemus,Christian Petzold,Rainer Rother Pdf

"The informal movement that critics like to call the Berlin School, " as director Christoph Hochhäusler puts it, is a loose affiliation of filmmakers who emerged around the time the Berlin Wall fell. The founding figures--Thomas Arslan, Christian Petzold, and Angela Schanelec--and their younger colleagues are not bound by a manifesto or by any singular aesthetic. Nonetheless, their observant portrayals of characters in flux offer a compelling cinematic expression of the search for new identities in a time of societal change. The films of the Berlin School have resonated profoundly since the mid-1990s, making it one of the most influential auteur movements to emerge from Europe in the new millennium.

Historical Dictionary of Holocaust Cinema by Robert C. Reimer,Carol J. Reimer Pdf

Some say that telling the story of the Holocaust is impossible, yet, artists have told the story thousands of time since the end of World War II in novels, dramas, paintings, music, sculpture, and film. Over the past seven decades, hundreds of documentaries, narrative shorts and features, and television miniseries have confronted the horrors of the past, creating an easily recognized iconography of persecution and genocide. While it can be argued that film and television have a tendency to trivialize, using the artifacts of popular culture – film and literature – artists keep the past alive, ensuring that victims are not forgotten and the tragedy of the Holocaust is not repeated. The Historical Dictionary of Holocaust Cinema examines the history of how the Holocaust is presented in film, including documentaries, feature films, and television productions. It contains a chronology of events needed to give the films and their reception a historical context, an introductory essay, a bibliography, a filmography of more than 600 titles, and over 100 cross-referenced dictionary entries on films, directors, and historical figures. Foreign language films and experimental films are included, as well as canonical films. This book is a must for anyone interested in the scope of films on the Holocaust and also for scholars interested in investigating ideas for future research.
