The College of Corpus Christi and of the Blessed Virgin Mary by John Patrick Tuer Bury,Patrick Bury Pdf

Reissue of classic college history covering period of great changes in society and in university affairs. This history, originally published on the occasion of the Sexcentenary of the College in 1952, carries on the story first told by Masters (1753) and Lamb (1831), and brings it down to the mid-twentieth century, Mastership by Mastership. It deals with a period of great changes during which a Whig Society turned Tory, flourished as a stronghold of Evangelicalism, and was for a time the third largest College in the University. The book goes on to describe thedecline which set in at the end of the nineteenth century, the break with the Low Church tradition, and the Renaissance which began under new leadership shortly before the First World War and continued after it. It says somethingof the effect upon the College of the great University reforms of the period, and it attempts to give some picture of social conditions, and the way of life of the ordinary undergraduate. The volume also includes lives of all theFellows active in the College between 1822 and 1952, notes on College livings, an account of the holders of College offices, and an alphabetical list of all members of the College admitted between 1822 and 1950.

A Concise History of the University of Cambridge by E. S. Leedham-Green Pdf

This concise, illustrated history of the University of Cambridge, from its thirteenth-century origins to the present day, is the only book of its kind in print and is intended as a standard introduction for anyone interested in one of the world's greatest academic institutions. Many individuals are celebrated here who have exerted great influence upon developments within the University and beyond. But forces for change have often come from outside the University, from central government or from the aspirations and expectations of society at large. One of the prime objectives of this book is to describe how the university has reacted to, or resisted, these external pressures. At the same time it conveys an impression of the day-to-day experiences of students and their teachers and administrators over the University's 700-year history. Major university institutions, such as the University Press and the University Library, are also described briefly. The book contains many attractive and often unusual illustrations, of subjects ranging from medieval manuscripts to the striking new building projects of the 1990s.

Cambridgeshire Customs and Folklore (RLE Folklore) by Enid Porter Pdf

Enid Porter spent many years collecting and recording from Cambridgeshire people the folk beliefs and customs held and observed in the country, both past and present. The subjects covered in the book, first published in 1969, range from the folklore of courtship, marriage, birth and death, of trees and plants and the whole world of nature to traditional Cambridgeshire food and drink; from ghosts and witchcraft and the cure of disease to charity and land-letting customs. The traditional occupations of the county, as well as the dress worn by the workers in the various crafts and the tools and implements they used, are also recorded, and there are accounts of various Cambridgeshire sports and pastimes. There is a section on University customs, ranging from the ancient procedure observed at examinations and degree ceremonies, through College Stamps and Mock Funerals, to the appointment made formerly of a Christmas Lord in the Colleges. Miss Porter spent most of her life in Cambridge and her mother’s family have lived there since the sixteenth century, so she includes information based on her own observations and on those of members of her family. The Fenland material has largely been provided by W. H. Barrett, well known through his collections of Fen Tales.

Christopher Marlowe by Park Honan Pdf

Christopher Marlowe: Poet & Spy is the most thorough and detailed life of Marlowe since John Bakeless's in 1942. It has new material on Marlowe in relation to Canterbury, also on his home life, schooling, and six and a half years at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and includes fresh data on his reading, teachers, and early achievements, including a new letter with a new date for the famous 'putative portrait' of Marlowe at Cambridge. The biography uses for the first time the Latin writings of his friend Thomas Watson to illuminate Marlowe's life in London and his career as a spy (that is, as a courier and agent for the Elizabethan Privy Council). There are new accounts of him on the continent, particularly at Flushing or Vlissingen, where he was arrested. The book also more fully explains Marlowe's relations with his chief patron, Thomas Walsingham, than ever before. This is also the first biography to explore in detail Marlowe's relations with fellow playwrights such as Kyd and Shakespeare, and to show how Marlowe's relations with Shakespeare evolved from 1590 to 1593. With closer views of him in relation to the Elizabethan stage than have appeared in any biography, the book examines in detail his aims, mind, and techniques as exhibited in all of his plays, from Dido, the Tamburlaine dramas, and Doctor Faustus through to The Jew of Malta and Edward II. It offers new treatments of his evolving versions of 'The Passionate Shepherd', and displays circumstances, influences, and the bearings of Shakespeare's 'Venus and Adonis' in relation to Marlowe's 'Hero and Leander'. Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on Marlowe's friendships and so-called 'homosexuality'. Fresh information is brought to bear on his seductive use of blasphemy, his street fights, his methods of preparing himself for writing, and his atheism and religious interests. The book also explores his attraction to scientists and mathematicians such as Thomas Harriot and others in the Ralegh-Northumberland set of thinkers and experimenters. Finally, there is new data on spies and business agents such as Robert Poley, Nicholas Skeres, and Ingram Frizer, and a more exact account of the circumstances that led up to Marlowe's murder.
