The Comedy of Dante Alighieri: Canticle 1: Hell by Dante Alighieri Pdf

"In this new translation of its first canticle, Hell, the precise meaning of the original is allowed to come across without recourse to literalness or loss of poetic feel. In addition, the novel use of tetrameters ensures the lively rhythms of the original are captured better than by using the more traditional blank verse. Similar novelty may be found in the redesign of forty-two of Gustave Doré’s original engravings to convey a striking vision of a stark, bleak and desolate Hell; there are also two new maps of both Hell and Dante’s universe. With nearly a hundred pages of notes to help the reader who is unfamiliar with Dante and his world, this is a translation that can be readily understood by anyone ..." publisher's blurb.

Inferno by Dante Alighieri Pdf

"Tom Simone's translation is simply superb. Of all the translations with which I am familiar, this is the one that is the most faithful to what's there in the Italian: no frills, no poetic sallies, no choosing a word because it brings the line closer to iambic pentameter—just unadulterated Dante with good old Anglo-Saxon words and in highly readable prose." —Peter Kalkavage, St. John's University

The Divine Comedy, Part 1: Hell by Dante Alighieri Pdf

The Divine Comedy (Italian: La Commedia, later La Divina Commedia) is a poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed in 1320, that gives the widest synthesis of medieval culture and world ontology. It is a real medieval encyclopedia of scientific, political, philosophical, moral and religious knowledges. It is considered to be the preeminent work in Italian and world literature. The Comedy is a result work of the whole second part of Dante's life; it is his last and most mature creation. The poet's view of the world is delivered in this work to the fullest extent. Dante acts here as the last great medieval poet; the poet who continues to develop medieval literature.Hell is represented in a form of a huge tunnel, consisting of concentric circles, which narrowing end approaches the centre of the earth. After going through the Hell's threshold, where the souls of weak and vain people dwell, they enter the first Circle, Limbo that contains the souls of virtuous pagans who did not learn true belief but nearly approached it, so they were put out of hellfire. Dante watches here such representatives of Antic culture as Aristotle, Euripides, Homer etc.The Hell's "antiquity" is inducted to underline that Antic culture is not signed by Christ, it is pagan and, as a result, it is not sinful.

The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 1 by Dante Alighieri Pdf

Excerpt from The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 1: Hell To preserve in its integrity what may be thus transferred, prose is a better medium than verse; and it was because of my conviction to this effect that I undertook this translation, in which my aim has been to follow the words of Dante as closely as our English idiom allows, and thus to give to the reader the substance of the poem as little altered as possible. There are, indeed, many passages in it which require explanation or illustration for Italian, and, even more, for English readers. To these I have supplied footnotes, generally brief. But I have desired to avoid distracting attention from the direct narrative, and have mainly left the understanding and appreciation of it to the intelligence and imagination of the reader.
