The Complex by Nick Turse Pdf

A mind-boggling investigation of the allpervasive, constantly morphing presence of the Pentagon in daily life—a real-world Matrix come alive Here is the new, hip, high-tech military-industrial complex—an omnipresent, hidden-in-plain-sight system of systems that penetrates all our lives. From iPods to Starbucks to Oakley sunglasses, historian Nick Turse explores the Pentagon's little-noticed contacts (and contracts) with the products and companies that now form the fabric of America. Turse investigates the remarkable range of military incursions into the civilian world: the Pentagon's collaborations with Hollywood filmmakers; its outlandish schemes to weaponize the wild kingdom; its joint ventures with the World Wrestling Federation and NASCAR. He shows the inventive ways the military, desperate for new recruits, now targets children and young adults, tapping into the "culture of cool" by making "friends" on MySpace. A striking vision of this brave new world of remote-controlled rats and super-soldiers who need no sleep, The Complex will change our understanding of the militarization of America. We are a long way from Eisenhower's military-industrial complex: this is the essential book for understanding its twenty-first-century progeny.

Painlevé Differential Equations in the Complex Plane by Valerii I. Gromak,Ilpo Laine,Shun Shimomura Pdf

This book is the first comprehensive treatment of Painlevé differential equations in the complex plane. Starting with a rigorous presentation for the meromorphic nature of their solutions, the Nevanlinna theory will be applied to offer a detailed exposition of growth aspects and value distribution of Painlevé transcendents. The subsequent main part of the book is devoted to topics of classical background such as representations and expansions of solutions, solutions of special type like rational and special transcendental solutions, Bäcklund transformations and higher order analogues, treated separately for each of these six equations. The final chapter offers a short overview of applications of Painlevé equations, including an introduction to their discrete counterparts. Due to the present important role of Painlevé equations in physical applications, this monograph should be of interest to researchers in both mathematics and physics and to graduate students interested in mathematical physics and the theory of differential equations.

Language and the Complex of Ideology by Mohamed Douifi Pdf

This book undertakes a systematic analysis of the workings of ideology in discourse, using an interdisciplinary approach that links language, cognition and society. Through examination of two corpora - a collection of British newspaper articles and a set of political speeches - the author examines Britain's involvement in the Iraq War (2003), and critically assesses the language practices which constructed a pro-war ideology under Tony Blair's premiership. Drawing on a constellation of concepts from van Dijk's socio-cognitive model, this book carries out both qualitative and quantitative analyses and conceptualises discourse as a nonlinear, highly discursive and socio-cognitive phenomenon. This innovative work will appeal to students and scholars of Cognitive Linguistics, Quantitative Linguistics, Social Constructivism, Critical Discourse Analysis, Political Sciences and Communication Studies.

Evolutions of the Complex Relationship Between Education and Territories by Angela Barthes,Pierre Champollion,Yves Alpe Pdf

The book weaves the story of the complex links between education and its territories. The aim here is to examine the education couple - understood in the broadest sense: school, college, high school, universities - and territory, according to three main axes: the history and the characterization of the different ties maintained And which the school and its territory always maintain; That of the categorization and characterization of the territories in which the school is situated, of the educational policies - both explicit and grassroots - connected with it and their effects on the school; That of recent pedagogical, didactic and organizational innovations. The book is based on French specialists in territorial education issues.

Crisis Management in a Complex World by Dawn R. Gilpin,Priscilla J. Murphy Pdf

Today's managers, business owners, and public relations practitioners grapple daily with a fundamental question about contemporary crisis management: to what extent is it possible to control events and stakeholder responses to them, in order to contain escalating crises or safeguard an organization's reputation? The authors meet the question head-on, departing from other crisis management texts, and arguing that a complexity-based approach is superior to the standard simplification model of organizational learning.

The Local Budget as a Complex System by Jeffrey Chapman Pdf

This book examines budgeting by analyzing the local government budget as a complex system, thus adding a new dimension to traditional budget textbooks. It is designed to complement existing texts—not replace—by putting the budget in a complex system, general equilibrium framework. A complex systems framework adds to conventional budget analysis in at least four ways: It looks at the budget as the result of many variables that are outside the finance department’s purview; it understands that there are multiple interdependences among these variables; it suggests analysis of non-obvious relationships among actions in the budget process in order to optimize results; and it argues that the actors in the process must understand that their budgetary behaviors have indirect and far-reaching implications that go beyond the budget document. This book also uses concepts seldom discussed in the budgetary literature—that of governance, including concepts of the facilitative state, with adjustments for exogenous shocks; the forms of decision making; and the political climate of the jurisdiction. This framework notes methods of success of firms in the private sector that operate in environments of rapid technological change. While becoming a popular theoretical framework for how private sector firms change, dynamic capability analysis has received little attention in the public management field. This book utilizes DC since public sector organizations also face rapidly changing environments. Lastly, the book discusses the potential relationship between the local budget and local community welfare maximization.

Mathematical Methods for Analysis of a Complex Disease by F. C. Hoppensteadt Pdf

Complex diseases involve most aspects of population biology, including genetics, demographics, epidemiology, and ecology. Mathematical methods, including differential, difference, and integral equations, numerical analysis, and random processes, have been used effectively in all of these areas. The aim of this book is to provide sufficient background in such mathematical and computational methods to enable the reader to better understand complex systems in biology, medicine, and the life sciences. It introduces concepts in mathematics to study population phenomena with the goal of describing complicated aspects of a disease, such as malaria, involving several species. The book is based on a graduate course in computational biology and applied mathematics taught at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in fall 2010. The mathematical level is kept to essentially advanced undergraduate mathematics, and the results in the book are intended to provide readers with tools for performing more in-depth analysis of population phenomena.

A MatLab® Companion to Complex Variables by A. David Wunsch Pdf

This book is intended for someone learning functions of a complex variable and who enjoys using MATLAB. It will enhance the exprience of learning complex variable theory and will strengthen the knowledge of someone already trained in ths branch of advanced calculus. ABET, the accrediting board for engineering programs, makes it clear that engineering graduates must be skilled in the art of programming in a language such as MATLAB®. Supplying students with a bridge between the functions of complex variable theory and MATLAB, this supplemental text enables instructors to easily add a MATLAB component to their complex variables courses. A MATLAB® Companion to Complex Variables provides readers with a clear understanding of the utility of MATLAB in complex variable calculus. An ideal adjunct to standard texts on the functions of complex variables, the book allows professors to quickly find and assign MATLAB programming problems that will strengthen students’ knowledge of the language and concepts of complex variable theory. The book shows students how MATLAB can be a powerful learning aid in such staples of complex variable theory as conformal mapping, infinite series, contour integration, and Laplace and Fourier transforms. In addition to MATLAB programming problems, the text includes many examples in each chapter along with MATLAB code. Fractals, the most recent interesting topic involving complex variables, demands to be treated with a language such as MATLAB. This book concludes with a Coda, which is devoted entirely to this visually intriguing subject. MATLAB is not without constraints, limitations, irritations, and quirks, and there are subtleties involved in performing the calculus of complex variable theory with this language. Without knowledge of these subtleties, engineers or scientists attempting to use MATLAB for solutions of practical problems in complex variable theory suffer the risk of making major mistakes. This book serves as an early warning system about these pitfalls.
