And of course it does not hurt that the illustrations are their own little masterpieces..." (Elsa Takaoka, picturestoryebook.com) "Tim Flanagan's new children's book, The Curious Disappearance of Professor Brown is a great read. Even the most reluctant reader will find something in this book that will get them wanting to read. It has mystery, humor, and it's paced perfectly so there aren't any parts that drag.We are passengers on the thrill ride that is this book as the mystery unveils itself. The reader will in one moment be laughing, and then in the next moment will be drawn into the suspense of the story." (Maria Foley, Book Junkies) A Personal Note from the Author When I was a child I enjoyed looking at the artwork that went with the books I read, especially those that had some hidden information that added an extra layer to the story. And that was something I wanted to recreate with The Curious Disappearance of Professor Brown. Writing can sometimes be a lonely occupation, but teaming up with someone as talented and inspiring as Dylan Gibson, has made this book a complete joy to work on. Dylan's illustrations bring an added dimension to the story that make the characters take on a life all of their own.

Climbs and Ski Runs by Frank Smythe Pdf

'"Why do you climb?" The mountaineer has no answer to this question. The best things in the world cannot adequately be expressed in speech or print; they are part of the soul.' In Climbs and Ski Runs, Frank Smythe takes the reader on Alpine ski trips and Dolomite adventures, up first ascents in North Wales and on to the mighty Brenva Face of Mont Blanc. He places pebbles for runners, 'shoots' crevasses and is struck by lightning. And yet, all the while, he perfectly captures the moments that make climbing and mountaineering so special - moments that will resonate with anybody who has spent time in the hills. Frank Smythe was among the leading mountaineers of the early twentieth century and one of the finest climbing writers ever to put pen to paper. In Climbs and Ski Runs he documents his early forays into the mountains, giving a remarkable insight into that period of climbing and mountaineering. Yet it is not this that makes the book special. It is Smythe's ability to observe and recreate his surroundings and to write so compellingly about the climber's response to them, and to the moments of difficulty and danger, that brings Climbs and Ski Runs to life.

The Complete Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton Pdf

G. K. Chesterton's The Complete Father Brown Stories Father Brown originally appeared in 1911 in The Innocence of Father Brown, one of the most oddly pleasant and charming characters to emerge from English detective fiction. G.K. Chesterton's genial priest was thrust into the forefront of quirky sleuths with that first collection of stories. This complete collection comprises all of the favourite Father Brown stories, demonstrating a calm wit and compassion that has endeared him to many, while solving his problems in a very convincing manner using a combination of imagination and compassionate worldliness.

The Palgrave Handbook of Criminology and the Global South by Kerry Carrington,Russell Hogg,John Scott,Máximo Sozzo Pdf

The first comprehensive collection of its kind, this handbook addresses the problem of knowledge production in criminology, redressing the global imbalance with an original focus on the Global South. Issues of vital criminological research and policy significance abound in the Global South, with important implications for South/North relations as well as global security and justice. In a world of high speed communication technologies and fluid national borders, empire building has shifted from colonising territories to colonising knowledge. The authors of this volume question whose voices, experiences, and theories are reflected in the discipline, and argue that diversity of discourse is more important now than ever before. Approaching the subject from a range of historical, theoretical, and social perspectives, this collection promotes the Global South not only as a space for the production of knowledge, but crucially, as a source of innovative research and theory on crime and justice. Wide-ranging in scope and authoritative in theory, this study will appeal to scholars, activists, policy-makers, and students from a wide range of social science disciplines from both the Global North and South, including criminal justice, human rights, and penology.

Ocular Proof and the Spectacled Detective in British Crime Fiction by Lisa Hopkins Pdf

From Sherlock Holmes onwards, fictional detectives use lenses: Ocular Proof and the Spectacled Detective in British Crime Fiction argues that these visual aids are metaphors for ways of seeing, and that they help us to understand not only individual detectives’ methods but also the kinds of cultural work detective fiction may do. It is sometimes regarded as a socially conservative form, and certainly the enduring popularity of ‘Golden Age’ writers such as Christie, Sayers, Allingham and Marsh implies a strong element of nostalgia in the appeal of the genre. The emphasis on visual aids, however, suggests that solving crime is not a simple matter of uncovering truth but a complex, sophisticated and inherently subjective process, and thus challenges any sense of comforting certainties. Moreover, the value of eye-witness testimony is often troubled in detective fiction by use of the phrase ‘the ocular proof’, whose origin in Shakespeare’s Othello reminds us that Othello is manipulated by Iago into misinterpreting what he sees. The act of seeing thus comes to seem ideological and provisional, and Lisa Hopkins argues that the kind of visual aid selected by each detective is an index of his particular propensities and biases.

Resistance and Renewal by Celia Haig-Brown Pdf

One of the first books published to deal with the phenomenon of residential schools in Canada, Resistance and Renewal is a disturbing collection of Native perspectives on the Kamloops Indian Residential School(KIRS) in the British Columbia interior. Interviews with thirteen Natives, all former residents of KIRS, form the nucleus of the book, a frank depiction of school life, and a telling account of the system's oppressive environment which sought to stifle Native culture.
