Until now, most literature on the subject originated in industrial lender countries, whose primary concern is the impact of the debt

Growth, Debt, and Sovereign Risk in a Small, Open Economy by Jagdeep S. Bhandari,Nadeem Ul Haque,Stephen J. Turnovsky Pdf

This paper develops a macroeconomic model for a small, open, developing economy that borrows abroad - to study the dynamic interaction between debt and growth and the impacts of various policies and exogenous shocks on the rate of capital accumulation, the current account, and debt. Adjustment policies that increase productivity and efficient use of capital increase both growth and the stock of external debt - but the new level of debt may be sustainable in the long run.

Preventing Currency Crises in Emerging Markets by Sebastian Edwards,Jeffrey A. Frankel Pdf

Economists and policymakers are still trying to understand the lessons recent financial crises in Asia and other emerging market countries hold for the future of the global financial system. In this timely and important volume, distinguished academics, officials in multilateral organizations, and public and private sector economists explore the causes of and effective policy responses to international currency crises. Topics covered include exchange rate regimes, contagion (transmission of currency crises across countries), the current account of the balance of payments, the role of private sector investors and of speculators, the reaction of the official sector (including the multilaterals), capital controls, bank supervision and weaknesses, and the roles of cronyism, corruption, and large players (including hedge funds). Ably balancing detailed case studies, cross-country comparisons, and theoretical concerns, this book will make a major contribution to ongoing efforts to understand and prevent international currency crises.

Growth, External Debt and Sovereign Risk in a Small Open Economy by International Monetary Fund Pdf

This paper constructs and analyzes an optimizing model of a highly-indebted small open economy. An important innovation in the model is the incorporation of sovereign risk through the specification of an upward-sloping foreign debt supply function. The model is used to examine the interaction between external debt and growth in response to various policies and exogenous disturbances. It is shown that structural policies intended to reduce the fiscal deficit or increase productivity can lead to tradeoffs in their effect on capital accumulation and the stock of debt.

What Determines the Current Account? a Cross-Sectional and Panel Approach by Mr.Hamid Faruqee,Guy Debelle Pdf

This paper uses cross-section and panel data to examine the determinants of the current account. The empirics find a significant impact of the stage of development and demographic factors in the cross section. Estimating partial-adjustment and error-correction models using panel data, the paper finds a short- and long-run impact of fiscal policy on the current account in the time series. The real exchange rate, the business cycle and the terms of trade are also shown to have short-run effects on the current account, while the stage of development and demographics have longer-run effects.
