The Curt Brown Chronicles by Michael J. Pallamary Pdf

Curtis M. Brown has long been recognized as the worlds foremost authorities on land surveying. His works and textbooks are found in virtually every Land Surveyors library across the country. His legal principles have been adopted by a large number of courts across the United States and his books are standard reference works for practicing Land Surveyors. The Curt Brown Chronicles presents a collection of papers, lectures, and articles prepared by Mr. Brown in the course of developing the principles and authorities for his textbooks and classes. While serving as a member of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM), Mr. Brown was a regular contributor to The Surveyor and Law and the Comment and Discussion columns as well as other important articles. In this capacity, Mr. Brown would respond to inquiries from Land Surveyors across the United States on a variety of subjects related to land surveying and the application of relevant law. His opinions continue to have considerable influence on the professional land surveying community and the legal community. Many of the papers contained in The Curt Brown Chronicles have not been released since their original publication in the 1950s and 1960s. Nevertheless, the subjects are still germane and in many ways, Curts focus on many subjects was prescient. Mr. Browns articles on Land Surveyors Liability to Unwritten Rights, Land Surveyors Ethics, and The Professional Status of Land Surveyors, are still considered relevant and are held in as high a regard as is Justice Thomas Cooleys (Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Michigan, 1864-1885) famous article, The Judicial Functions of Surveyors. The Curt Brown Chronicles has been compiled with the consent and permission of ACSM and the Brown family

November's Fury by Michael Schumacher Pdf

On Thursday, November 6, the Detroit News forecasted “moderate to brisk” winds for the Great Lakes. On Friday, the Port Huron Times-Herald predicted a “moderately severe” storm. Hourly the warnings became more and more dire. Weather forecasting was in its infancy, however, and radio communication was not much better; by the time it became clear that a freshwater hurricane of epic proportions was developing, the storm was well on its way to becoming the deadliest in Great Lakes maritime history. The ultimate story of man versus nature, November’s Fury recounts the dramatic events that unfolded over those four days in 1913, as captains eager—or at times forced—to finish the season tried to outrun the massive storm that sank, stranded, or demolished dozens of boats and claimed the lives of more than 250 sailors. This is an account of incredible seamanship under impossible conditions, of inexplicable blunders, heroic rescue efforts, and the sad aftermath of recovering bodies washed ashore and paying tribute to those lost at sea. It is a tragedy made all the more real by the voices of men—now long deceased—who sailed through and survived the storm, and by a remarkable array of photographs documenting the phenomenal damage this not-so-perfect storm wreaked. The consummate storyteller of Great Lakes lore, Michael Schumacher at long last brings this violent storm to terrifying life, from its first stirrings through its slow-mounting destructive fury to its profound aftereffects, many still felt to this day.

Cultural Difference and Material Culture in Middle English Romance by Dominique Battles Pdf

This book explores how the cultural distinctions and conflicts between Anglo-Saxons and Normans originating with the Norman Conquest of 1066 prevailed well into the fourteenth century and are manifest in a significant number of Middle English romances including King Horn, Havelok the Dane, Sir Orfeo, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and others. Specifically, the study looks at how the material culture of these poems (architecture, battle tactic, landscapes) systematically and persistently distinguishes between Norman and Anglo-Saxon cultural identity. Additionally, it examines the influence of the English Outlaw Tradition, itself grounded in Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Norman Conquest, as expressed in specific recurring scenes (disguise and infiltration, forest exile) found in many Middle English romances. In the broadest sense, a significant number of Middle English romances, including some of the most well-read and often-taught, set up a dichotomy of two ruling houses headed by a powerful lord, who compete for power and influence. This book examines the cultural heritage behind each of these pairings to show how poets repeatedly contrast essentially Norman and Anglo-Saxon values and ruling styles.

The Social and Cultural Construction of Risk by B.B. Johnson,V.T. Covello Pdf

The Social and Cultural Construction of Risk: Issues, Methods, and Case Studies Vincent T. Covello and Branden B. Johnson Risks to health, safety, and the environment abound in the world and people cope as best they can. But before action can be taken to control, reduce, or eliminate these risks, decisions must be made about which risks are important and which risks can safely be ignored. The challenge for decision makers is that consensus on these matters is often lacking. Risks believed by some individuals and groups to be tolerable or accept able - such as the risks of nuclear power or industrial pollutants - are intolerable and unacceptable to others. This book addresses this issue by exploring how particular technological risks come to be selected for societal attention and action. Each section of the volume examines, from a different perspective, how individuals, groups, communities, and societies decide what is risky, how risky it is, and what should be done. The writing of this book was inspired by another book: Risk and Culture: An Essay on the Selection of Technoloqical and Environmental Dangers. Published in 1982 and written by two distinguished scholars - Mary Douglas, a British social anthropologist, and Aaron Wildavsky, an American political scientist - the book received wide critical attention and offered several provocative ideas on the nature of risk selection, perception, and acceptance.

Deep Future by Curt Stager Pdf

In this extraordinary book, paleoclimatologist Curt Stager shows how what we do to the environment in the next one hundred years will affect not just the next few centuries but the next 100,000 years of human existence. Most of us have accepted that our planet is warming and that humans have played the key role in causing climate change. Yet few of us realize the magnitude of what’s happening. In Deep Future, Curt Stager draws on the planet’s geological history to provide a view of where we may be headed long term. On the bright side, we have already put off the next ice age. But whether we will barrel ahead on a polluting path to a totally ice-free Arctic, miles of submerged coasts or an acidified ocean still remains to be decided. And that decision is ours to make. Deep Future adds a new dimension to the debate—one that will change how we think about what we are doing to our planet.
