Tsar and Sultan by Victor Taki Pdf

Tsar and Sultan offers a unique insight into Russian Orientalism as the intellectual force behind Russian-Ottoman encounters. Through war diaries and memoirs, accounts of captivity and diplomatic correspondences, Victor Taki's analysis of military documents demonstrates a crucial aspect of Russia's discovery of the Orient based on its rivalry with the Ottoman Empire. Narratives depicting the brutal realities of Russian-Turkish military conflicts influenced the Orientalisation of the Ottoman Empire. In turn, Russian identity was built as the counter-image to the demonised Turk. This book explains the significance of Russian Orientalism on Russian identity and national policies of westernisation. Students of both European and Middle East studies will appreciate Taki's unique approach to Russian-Turkish relations and their influence on Eurasian history.

The Czar and the Sultan by Adrian Gilson Pdf

Excerpt from The Czar and the Sultan: Or, Nicholas and Abdul Medjid: Their Private Lives and Public Actions; To Which Is Added the Turks in Europe: Their Rise and Decadence To satisfy the curiosity so vividly excited by the present aspect of affairs in the eastern extremities of Europe, I have been requested to write a double biographical notice on Nicholas the First and Abdul Medjid - the fact of my having resided for some period in the Danubian Principalities being considered to offer guarantees of novelty and truthfulness on the subject. The Moldo-Wallachian boyars - in the midst of whom I lived - are, in fact, admirably situated for ascertaining the truth between the two autocrats who dispute the privilege of protecting them. Their unfortunate country, invariably the victim of all the quarrels between the Turks and Russians, has as much to fear from their friends of the Pruth as from those of the Balkans. Consequently, all that takes place at St. Petersburg is discussed by them with no less interest than that which passes at Constantinople. Universal Empire by Peter Fibiger Bang,Dariusz Kolodziejczyk Pdf

The claim by certain rulers to universal empire has a long history stretching as far back as the Assyrian and Achaemenid Empires. This book traces its various manifestations in classical antiquity, the Islamic world, Asia and Central America as well as considering seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European discussions of international order. As such it is an exercise in comparative world history combining a multiplicity of approaches, from ancient history, to literary and philosophical studies, to the history of art and international relations and historical sociology. The notion of universal, imperial rule is presented as an elusive and much coveted prize among monarchs in history, around which developed forms of kingship and political culture. Different facets of the phenomenon are explored under three, broadly conceived, headings: symbolism, ceremony and diplomatic relations; universal or cosmopolitan literary high-cultures; and, finally, the inclination to present universal imperial rule as an expression of cosmic order.
