The Dark Stain by Benjamin Appel Pdf

The Dark Stain is a novel of tremendous force and vitality. It is a story of lust and hatred and passion . . . nakedly portrayed and in words the meaning of which can escape no one. The locale is Harlem, but what happens in its exciting pages has already been paralleled in many American cities and may happen in many more. It is the story of Sam Miller, a New York cop, who was unwillingly forced to kill a crazed negro. This killing sets off a series of events that threatens to explode into the riot. How an American Fascist group thies to exploit the situation gives the author an opportunity to tell a story that has all the elements of a thriller and all the threat of a warning. Suzy Buckles, beautiful and in love with Sam, is aware of the forces this killing will let loose. Hal Clair, negro leader, so light-hued that he passes for white, tries to act as the appeaser. Marian Burrow, his secretary, light-brown, desirable, a reefer smoker, hates the whites but is attractive to them and attracted by them. Bill Trent is a former gangster who has graduated into a salesman for Fascism. Ex-Governor Heney is a suave rabble rouser who has a particular appeal for people with fat bank accounts. Haydn Norris is a rich ma’s son, an international Fascist, without emotional hatreds; Big Boy Bose is vice lord of Harlem, whose distrust of the whites makes him a valuable ally. These are the leading characters, but there are many others, each of whom plays a role in this drama that is as timely as tomorrow’s headlines . . . The story of an America that can happen here.

Stain by A. G. Howard Pdf

A princess must win back her kingdom, save a prince, and restore peace in this fantasy by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of the Splintered series. After Lyra—a princess incapable of speech or sound—is cast out of her kingdom of daylight by her wicked aunt, a witch saves her life, steals her memories, and raises her in an enchanted forest…disguised as a boy known only as Stain. Meanwhile, in Lyra’s rival kingdom, the prince of thorns and night is dying, and the only way for him to break his curse is to wed the princess of daylight—for she is his true equal. As Lyra finds her way back to her identity, an imposter princess prepares to steal her betrothed prince and her crown. To win back her kingdom, save the prince, and make peace with the land of the night, Lyra must be loud enough to be heard without a voice, and strong enough to pass a series of tests—ultimately proving she’s everything a traditional princess is not. “A decadent fantasy anchored in childhood delights with vibrantly detailed writing and brilliantly theatrical subplots.” —Kirkus Reviews “[A] reimagining of “The Princess and the Pea” . . . An emotionally complex tale of fate, inner beauty, and found family that illustrates the strength of love born from friendship.” —Publishers Weekly

The Human Stain by Philip Roth Pdf

It is 1998, the year in which America is whipped into a frenzy of prurience by the impeachment of a president, and in a small New England town, an aging classics professor, Coleman Silk, is forced to retire when his colleagues decree that he is a racist. The charge is a lie, but the real truth about Silk would have astonished his most virulent accuser. Coleman Silk has a secret. But it's not the secret of his affair, at seventy-one, with Faunia Farley, a woman half his age with a savagely wrecked past--a part-time farmhand and a janitor at the college where, until recently, he was the powerful dean of faculty. And it's not the secret of Coleman's alleged racism, which provoked the college witch-hunt that cost him his job and, to his mind, killed his wife. Nor is it the secret of misogyny, despite the best efforts of his ambitious young colleague, Professor Delphine Roux, to expose him as a fiend. Coleman's secret has been kept for fifty years: from his wife, his four children, his colleagues, and his friends, including the writer Nathan Zuckerman, who sets out to understand how this eminent, upright man, esteemed as an educator for nearly all his life, had fabricated his identity and how that cannily controlled life came unraveled. Set in 1990s America, where conflicting moralities and ideological divisions are made manifest through public denunciation and rituals of purification, The Human Stain concludes Philip Roth's eloquent trilogy of postwar American lives that are as tragically determined by the nation's fate as by the "human stain" that so ineradicably marks human nature. This harrowing, deeply compassionate, and completely absorbing novel is a magnificent successor to his Vietnam-era novel, American Pastoral, and his McCarthy-era novel, I Married a Communist.

Gram Stain by Subhash K. Mohan Pdf

There are several medical mycology textbooks that contain a chapter on direct microscopy. However, this textbook is the first of its kind, as it discusses the simple Gram stain procedure as a valuable tool for the detection of fungal elements. This book has been specifically designed for people working in the medical microbiology laboratory with little or no practical experience in medical mycology. The central idea presented in this textbook begins with the Gram stain for the detection of fungi; the most important and more frequently isolated opportunistic and potentially pathogenic fungal species have been included. The book contains more than three hundred color images, the majority of which come from direct smear examination, such as Gram stain and other staining procedures. The mold phase and the microscopic structure of the identified fungal species relating to the initial findings of the direct smear have been linked to avoid bias. When a fungal infection is present but not suspected clinically, the Gram stain may be the only clue to the true cause of the infection. Although there are better methods than the Gram stain for visualization of fungi, these methods are only performed if there is clinical suspicion for fungal disease. Clinicians often send specimens for bacterial culture, but they sometimes overlook requests for fungal culture. During such times, the Gram stain is the only technique available in the clinical microbiology laboratory for direct detection of fungi from these specimens. The presence of fungi should not be overlooked during the direct examination of the clinical specimens for bacteria. This book will guide the reader in the recognition and identification of fungal elements in gram-stained smears, especially when they are distorted and remain unstained and undetectable. This new textbook focuses on the detection and classification of fungal elements in Gram stains. Newly developed flowcharts, clues, and key details regarding structural characteristics have been added to guide the reader in the right direction.Throughout the years, the author has accumulated many scenarios in which fungal elements were not detected on the original Gram stain evaluation but were found to be positive upon review once the culture grew a fungus. Finally, the book contains a chapter with a practice examination including microscopic images representative of scenarios commonly encountered in the clinical microbiology laboratory.
