Day Care Deception by Brian C. Robertson Pdf

The central issue of daycare is often framed in a way that pits working moms against stay-at-home moms, and feminists against traditional families. But the real conflict, Brian C. Robertson shows in this carefully researched book, is between all parents and the burgeoning day care establishment itself-a multimillion dollar lobby with a vested interest in the expansion of subsidized day care services. Robertson shows how this establishment works to expand its power and silence its critics.

Child Care Today by Penelope Leach Pdf

From the universally admired author of the bestselling classic Your Baby and Child: “a masterful work [that could] revolutionize the way America cares for its young children and bring about a radical improvement in the lives of children and their parents” (The Boston Globe). Who is caring for today’s children? How well are they succeeding? What does care cost, and who is paying for it? Leach answers these and other urgent questions with facts and figures gathered from the most current research, brought to life by the voices of parents, including those involved in her own five-year study. She highlights the urgent need in America today for measures to raise the quality of child care and to make the best care we can provide available to all families, just as it is in most other developed nations. Setting out clearly and candidly what is known about every aspect of child care—including the often hidden feelings and fears of parents—Leach presents a critical case for change.

Finding Daycare by Tracy Cassels Pdf

"It's just the same as all your stuff: thorough and sane and then, for me--because of the anthropological context you bring in--just a hell of a lot more interesting than other reading on the topic." David Epstein, bestselling author of The Sports GeneMost families will face the task of finding appropriate child care for their children. This is not a fun task and is made harder by the lack of high-quality care in most areas. This ebook is designed to help families navigate what is one of the most important yet least talked-about decisions they will make as parents. Serving as both information source and guide, this ebook covers the following areas to help parents find and transition their children to child care: * What are the options for care? So many times families think only about large centre-based daycares or home-based daycares, but there are other options that are available to some families. * What are the factors to consider when assessing a child care option? How safe is the environment? What do you even need to ask to find out how safe a given child care situation is? What about toys - are there too many or not enough? Do they go outside? In this book, I explore the three main areas to consider and what should be looked at in each: safety, environment, and quality of care.* How do you transition your child? As many parents will tell you, it's not as simple as just dropping your child off and hoping for the best. Knowing how your child transitions can help you make a plan to minimize the impact of the transition and make for a happier child care relationship in the long-term.* What does the research say about child care? So many different studies are out there, but what are the main points that we can take home? I summarize the research for you so you can better know what factors really matter and how you can apply these to your unique situation.* What if things go wrong? Sometimes things don't go as planned and you need to know the best way to handle these situations. I provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to handle difficult situations with care without getting too flustered or giving up.A short read packed with information, this ebook is for any parent who is facing the child care decision.

From Neurons to Neighborhoods by National Research Council,Institute of Medicine,Board on Children, Youth, and Families,Committee on Integrating the Science of Early Childhood Development Pdf

How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Taking Sex Differences Seriously by Steven E. Rhoads Pdf

Most contemporary discussions of sex differences assume that they are determined by society rather than biology. It is society that teaches little girls to be feminine and little boys to be masculine--society that tells women to respond to babies and men to respond to sports. Reflecting the fashionable idea that male and female roles have been "socially constructed," most commentators speak of gender instead of sex. Because men and women are virtually interchangeable, so the argument goes, men should do an equal share of domestic and childrearing work so that women can compete equally outside the home There's only one problem with this beguiling vision of androgyny. Whatever we might like to believe, as Dr. Steven Rhoads shows, sex distinctions remain a deeply rooted part of human nature. In "Taking Sex Differences Seriously," Rhoads assembles a wealth of scientific evidence showing that these differences are "hardwired" into our biology. They range from the subtle (men get a chemical high from winning while women get one from nursing) to the profound (women with high testosterone levels are more promiscuous, more competitive, and more conflicted about having children than those with average levels.) Rhoads explores disparities in aggression and dominance, in sexuality and nurturing. He shows how denial of these differences has helped to create the sexual revolution, fatherless families, and policies such as Title IX, and the call for universal day care. But while insisting that we must take sex differences seriously, Rhoads also advocates discouraging some natural tendencies, like men's desire for irresponsible sex, and encouraging others, like women's greater interest and talent in caring for babies. In this provocative exploration of the masculine and feminine, Steven Rhoads dispels contemporary clichéeacute;s and spotlights biological realities. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, "Taking Sex Differences Seriously" is a groundbreaking look at the way we are.

Decision in Child Care by R. A. Parker Pdf

Responsible decisions are continually being made in social work. In particular the decision to place a child in a foster home can have far-reaching consequences for their welfare and it is vital that we make the best possible choice on their behalf. Although in the 1960s thousands of children were boarded out every year no systematic attempt had yet been made to summarize this experience as a guide for practice. Thus important decisions lacked the help which past experience could provide. Originally published in 1966, this study assembled the past experience of foster care in one area, analysed it and presented it in such a way that predictions could be made of the outcome of a potential placement. At the time it offered an important contribution to the task of providing the best possible care for children separated from their own families. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Child Care When You Can't Be There by Beth L. Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK If you're a new parent (or just new to looking for child care), the many options and choices available can be overwhelming. Most people think of a daycare facility when the concept of childcare is considered, but there are actually many other options, including ones you probably never knew existed. Child care can generally be divided into two broad categories: care in your own home by a provider or care in an outside facility. Within each of these lie a number of choices. Care in your home can be provided by anyone from a family member to a live-in nanny to a part-time babysitter. Outside care choices include small home day cares and large centers. The costs and services vary from provider to provider. Arranging for child care when you can't be there is not only a practical issue, but an emotional one too. The decision to leave your child with someone else is a tough one that many parents struggle with. They want to make sure they choose the best care for their child - one that provides a safe, stimulating, comfortable environment in which the child will thrive and learn. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK As children grow, they may be more active and require more care than a family member is able to provide. If you choose a family member for care, be sure to set a timeframe in advance so that you know what to expect, and plan on looking for alternative care when the child is older. Another potential problem with in-home care by a family member is that the person may not provide the kind of care you desire. Just being family doesn't guarantee that the person is good at caring for your children. If there are significant differences between your values and expectations - such as how much television you want your child to watch, what type of activities to do, and how discipline is handled - it may be best to consider a different type of arrangement. A final, more practical problem is that if you will still need backup care. If your family member is sick or traveling, you'll have to find alternate arrangements. Be sure to have a backup plan in place. Another option for in home care is a nanny. The benefits of hiring a nanny are the same for other in-home care. Transitions are easier, and the children may feel more comfortable in their own home... Buy a copy to keep reading! Children, Families, and Health Care Decision Making by Lainie Friedman Ross Pdf

Ross here presents an original and controversial look at the moral principles that guide parents in making health care decisions for their children, and the role of children in the decision-making process. She opposes the current movement to increase child autonomy, in favor of respect for family autonomy and proposes significant changes in what informed consent allows and requires for pediatric health care decisions. The first systematic medical ethics book that focuses specifically on children's health care, Ross's work has important things to say to health care providers who work with children as well as to ethicists and public policy analysts.
