The Dibbuk Box by Jason Haxton Pdf

A series of eerie events slowly unfolds when a wine cabinet sells at an estate sale in Oregon. It is soon sold and resold on eBay's Internet auction, and each new owner becomes desperate to get rid of the box along with the health problems, accidents, or death they claim came with it. Jason Haxton, the curator of a medical museum in a small Missouri town, learns of the mysterious cabinet and is intrigued by it as an artifact to be studied and researched. He places a bid on eBay and soon finds himself the proud owner of the Dibbuk Box. But as he carefully investigates and records everything he can about this unusual item said to be possessed by a Jewish spirit, Haxton discovers far more than he bargained for. In this true account, a dark story comes to light—a story that began at the time of the Holocaust and seems to have come full circle.

The Boys Who Challenged Hitler by Phillip Hoose Pdf

At the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation's leaders, fifteen-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain: the boys' exploits and eventual imprisonment helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. Interweaving his own narrative with the recollections of Knud himself, here is Phillip Hoose's inspiring story of these young war heroes. This thoroughly-researched and documented book can be worked into multiple aspects of the common core curriculum.

A long ago "accident." An isolated girl named Aviva. A community that wants to help, but doesn't know how. And a ghostly dybbuk, that no one but Aviva can see, causing mayhem and mischief that everyone blames on her. That is the setting for this suspenseful novel of a girl who seems to have lost everything, including her best friend Kayla, and a mother who was once vibrant and popular, but who now can’t always get out of bed in the morning. As tensions escalate in the Jewish community of Beacon with incidents of vandalism and a swastika carved into new concrete poured near the synagogue...so does the tension grow between Aviva and Kayla and the girls at their school, and so do the actions of the dybbuk grow worse. Could real harm be coming Aviva's way? And is it somehow related to the "accident" that took her father years ago? Aviva vs. the Dybbuk is a compelling, tender story about friendship and community, grief and healing, and one indomitable girl who somehow manages to connect them all.

The Encyclopedia of Jewish Symbols by Ellen Frankel,Betsy Patkin Teutsch Pdf

Jewish symbols reflect the interaction of word and image within Jewish culture. Jews have always studied, interpreted, and revered sacred texts; they have also adorned the settings and occasions of sacred acts. Calligraphy and ornamentation have transformed Hebrew letters into art; quotation, interpretation, legend, and wordplay have made ceremonial objects into narrative. This book represents just such a collaboration between art and language. Ellen Frankel and Betsy Platkin Teutsch, writer and artist, have brought their extensive knowledge and talents together to create The Encyclopedia of Jewish Symbols, the first reference guide of its kind, designed for use by educators, artists, rabbis, folklorists, feminists, Jewish and non-Jewish scholars, and lay readers.

Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio by Amara Lakhous Pdf

The immigrant tenants of a building in Rome offer skewed accounts of a murder in this prize-winning satire by the Algerian-born Italian author (Publishers Weekly). Piazza Vittorio is home to a polyglot community of immigrants who have come to Rome from all over the world. But when a tenant is murdered in the building’s elevator, the delicate balance is thrown into disarray. As each of the victim’s neighbors is questioned by the police, readers are offered an all-access pass into the most colorful neighborhood in contemporary Rome. With language as colorful as the neighborhood it describes, each character takes his or her turn “giving evidence.” Their various stories reveal much about the drama of racial identity and the anxieties of a life spent on society’s margins, but also bring to life the hilarious imbroglios of this melting pot Italian culture. “Their frequently wild testimony teases out intriguing psychological and social insight alongside a playful whodunit plot.” —Publishers Weekly

The Haunted Dybbuk Box by Drac Von Stoller Pdf

The whole saga began when I was at the reading of my grandmother’s Will, and as the sole heir of her estate, I did not have to fight with any siblings or relatives because no one was living. I was very excited about the farm because my great grandmother owned a thousand acre farm located in our hometown which is a profitable farm due to the vineyard which has been there for over a century in our family. More so, I have not only worked closely with my grandmother during her ailing years but also I was her hope and rock through all the challenging times until when she was laid to rest. As I sat there and listened to the man reading the Will I was determined to not just sell the farm and take the money like anyone else would have that didn't care about their loved one in their passing. I was going to make sure that our family name would live on. My grandmother would turn over in her grave if she knew that I would just sell the farm and put it into the wrong hands like a money hungry contractor to plow over all this hard work and put a bunch of cheaply built real estate on the land. But she knows me better than that and knew I would do the right thing with my inheritance. She also seen all the energy and love I put into the farm and vineyard that if anything were to happen to her she knew I would keep it going until my dying day. After the reading of the Will it was time to continue on and hire a few more workers to keep the vineyard producing our signature wine and build a more modern looking winery to bring more wealthy people from all over the U.S. Luckily my grandmother wasn't careless with the fortune that the vineyard was bringing in so I could continue on for as long as I can. The first few months were a little hectic because I was so used to my grandmother handling the finances and the hiring. I decided to man up and enroll in a nearby college and take the necessary classes online to make sure I was clear on the business side of things. I was so used to all the dirty work with making sure the vineyard was healthy that I kind of took things for granted that my grandmother was doing on her end. I never asked her if I could help with the business side of things so I just did my thing not thinking the day would come when my grandmother would leave this earth, and leave me this heavy task to take on all by myself but here I am, and I'm not going to let her down. One night as I was looking through the attic I stumbled upon this old dusty Dybbuk box and was curious as to why there was a lock on it. There was also some strange writing on the box but I thought the box was cool, and that I could refinish it like new. I wasn't able to ask my grandmother about the box let alone where she kept the key. I decided I would just have to go outside to the barn and get my lock cutter and see what was inside. When I arrived back at the attic with the cutter the atmosphere was heavy but I didn't think too much about it and cut the lock off not knowing that was going to be the biggest mistake of my life. I'm not a superstitious kind of person by all means but that was about to change the moment I cut the lock off and opened the cabinet doors. Well here goes, as I opened the doors thinking maybe it was the original recipe to our first wine recipe or maybe it's something of more importance, but there was nothing but a foul odor and a mist. I was a little disappointed but since I still liked the box because of its intricate work I would still like to bring it back to its original beauty. As I was sanding the box I heard a low growl outside the barn which kind of spooked me even more because it was getting dark outside and I'm a little scared of the dark. All of a sudden I heard that growl again which made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. So, I grabbed a flashlight off the workbench and went outside to investigate, but as I shined the flashlight all around the barn there was nothing so I went back inside to finish the work on the box. As I was finishing up the work I noticed from my peripheral vision a dark figure walking past the entrance of the door. This was just the beginning of what Kevin would experience.

Stan Lee by Liel Leibovitz Pdf

From the prizewinning Jewish Lives series, a meditation on the deeply Jewish and surprisingly spiritual roots of Stan Lee and Marvel Comics Few artists have had as much of an impact on American popular culture as Stan Lee. The characters he created—Spider-Man and Iron Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four—occupy Hollywood’s imagination and production schedules, generate billions at the box office, and come as close as anything we have to a shared American mythology. This illuminating biography focuses as much on Lee’s ideas as it does on his unlikely rise to stardom. It surveys his cultural and religious upbringing and draws surprising connections between celebrated comic book heroes and the ancient tales of the Bible, the Talmud, and Jewish mysticism. Was Spider-Man just a reincarnation of Cain? Is the Incredible Hulk simply Adam by another name? From close readings of Lee’s work to little-known anecdotes from Marvel’s history, the book paints a portrait of Lee that goes much deeper than one of his signature onscreen cameos. About Jewish Lives: Jewish Lives is a prizewinning series of interpretative biography designed to explore the many facets of Jewish identity. Individual volumes illuminate the imprint of Jewish figures upon literature, religion, philosophy, politics, cultural and economic life, and the arts and sciences. Subjects are paired with authors to elicit lively, deeply informed books that explore the range and depth of the Jewish experience from antiquity to the present. In 2014, the Jewish Book Council named Jewish Lives the winner of its Jewish Book of the Year Award, the first series ever to receive this award. More praise for Jewish Lives: “Excellent.” – New York times “Exemplary.” – Wall St. Journal “Distinguished.” – New Yorker “Superb.” – The Guardian
