We have now to shew that the moveable pulley acts like a lever of the second order. Let the moveable pulley A, fig. 4, fl. II, be fixed to the weight W, with which it rises and falls, n comparing it with the lever alluded to, the fulcrum must be considered as at F; the weight acts upon the centre c, by means of the neck ch; the power is applied at D; and the line DF will represent the lever. The power, therefore, .as in fig. 3, is twice as far from the fulcrum as the weight, and the effect in both cases is alike, viz. the proportion between the power and the weight, in order to balance each other, must be as 1 to 2. It is evident, therefore, that the use of this pulley doubles the power, and that it will enable a Mtu to raise twice as much as by his strength alone. Or, as variety in illustration will sometimes catch the attention, and familiarize a subject to some whose ideas of it would not otherwise be distinct, the action of this pulley may be viewed in a light somewhat different from the above. It therefore instantly disappears if water be introduced into ajar of it; some caloric is evolved, and the specific gravity of the water is diminished. If ice be introduced into this gas, it melts and absorbs the ammonia, while at the same time its temperature is diminished. The specific gravity of water saturated with ammonia, at 60 is.9054. It is the attraction of water for ammonia, which renders it necessary to employ mercury in obtaining the gasWater combined with ammonia, acquires its smell, and has a disagreeable taste; it converts vegetable blues to green. It is this liquid solution of ammonia which is meant in speaking of the volatile alkali. VVhen heated to the temperature pt 130, the ammonia separates in the form of gas. Whep its temperature is reduced to--46, it crystallizes; and when suddenly cooled down to 68, it assumes the appearance of a thick jelly, and has scarcely any smell. Compound substances--Alkalies.--Ammonia. Ammonia may be obtained by the dry distillation of bones and other animal matters; it is from such substances that it is obtained to supply the demand of commerce, and it is sold under the name of spirits of hartshorn. The product of the first distillation from bones, &c. is very impure; it is therefore improved by repeated distillations. Berthollet's experiments evinced that one thousand parts of ammonia consists of 807 parts of nitrogen, and 193 parts of hydrogen; but Sir H. Dayj having discovered oxygen to' be the alkalizing principle in potass and soda, was convinced of the probability of its existing in ammonia.
