The History of South America From Its Discovery to the Present Time (Classic Reprint) by Alfred Joseph Deberle Pdf

Excerpt from The History of South America From Its Discovery to the Present Time It is a certain fact, unfortunately, that since Robertson, a respectable historian of the last century, no one has seriously undertaken to write the History of America, and especially of South America, of which the states, formerly Spanish colonies, with the exception of Brazil, are now republics almost unknown to Europeans. It must be confessed that their apathetic sons have not sufficiently exerted themselves to dissipate or rectify the erroneous and disdainful opinion that the Europeans have formed of our America, nor - and this is most important - to make known to each other nations and states closely related by origin, and natural allies by their interests, to all of whom, undoubtedly, days of prosperity and glory, of liberty and real aggrandisement, are reserved in the future, if they know how to profit by the lessons of history. To meet this need we have decided to write the history of our Fatherland, South America, that country which Columbus thought was Paradise, and which is the jewel of the universe, without being terrified by the grave difficulties that it was necessary to confront in order to bring it to a successful issue; difficulties, we confess, that we should not have attempted to overcome without the generous solicitude and lively desire by which we were animated to render by it a real service to our beloved country. The Discovery and Conquest of Peru by Pedro de Cieza de Leon Pdf

Dazzled by the sight of the vast treasure of gold and silver being unloaded at Seville’s docks in 1537, a teenaged Pedro de Cieza de León vowed to join the Spanish effort in the New World, become an explorer, and write what would become the earliest historical account of the conquest of Peru. Available for the first time in English, this history of Peru is based largely on interviews with Cieza’s conquistador compatriates, as well as with Indian informants knowledgeable of the Incan past. Alexandra Parma Cook and Noble David Cook present this recently discovered third book of a four-part chronicle that provides the most thorough and definitive record of the birth of modern Andean America. It describes with unparalleled detail the exploration of the Pacific coast of South America led by Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro, the imprisonment and death of the Inca Atahualpa, the Indian resistance, and the ultimate Spanish domination. Students and scholars of Latin American history and conquest narratives will welcome the publication of this volume.

New Worlds by John Lynch Pdf

This extraordinary book encompasses the time period from the first Christian evangelists' arrival in Latin America to the dictators of the late twentieth century. With unsurpassed knowledge of Latin American history, John Lynch sets out to explore the reception of Christianity by native peoples and how it influenced their social and religious lives as the centuries passed. As attentive to modern times as to the colonial period, Lynch also explores the extent to which Indian religion and ancestral ways survived within the new Christian culture. The book follows the development of religious culture over time by focusing on peak periods of change: the response of religion to the Enlightenment, the emergence of the Church from the wars of independence, the Romanization of Latin American religion as the papacy overtook the Spanish crown in effective control of the Church, the growing challenge of liberalism and the secular state, and in the twentieth century, military dictators' assaults on human rights. Throughout the narrative, Lynch develops a number of special themes and topics. Among these are the Spanish struggle for justice for Indians, the Church's position on slavery, the concept of popular religion as distinct from official religion, and the development of liberation theology.

Stories of South America by E. C. Brooks Pdf

The history of the western hemisphere begins rather with South America than with North America. Students of United States history are familiar with the life of Christopher Columbus and his finding of the New World. Although he pointed the way for European nations to found valuable colonies in North America, there was an interval of a hundred and fifteen years between Columbus's discovery in 1492 and the first English settlement in 1607. In this period much history was made in South America. Spain and Portugal established rich colonies on the southern continent. They built cities and developed a valuable commerce that not only enriched Spain and Portugal but created commercial and political centers in South America rivaling in importance many of the cities of Europe. Students naturally ask how it happened that Spain and Portugal gained such an advantage in the sixteenth century over England, France, and the other European nations and why it was that they established colonies in South America rather than in North America.
