The Dogue de Bordeaux is a breed of dog that is a part of the Mastiff breed one of the most ancient breeds of dog that originates from France. The Dogue de Bordeaux is commonly also known as the 'Bordeaux Mastiff' and the 'French Mastiff.' The breed was originally bred and developed in the south of France around the city of Bordeaux and the city lent its name to the breed. The Douge was the larger of the two typings and is what the modern Dogue de Bordeaux is based upon. The smaller Dougin typing is no longer in existence. The breed has a well-balanced, muscular and large powerful build. However despite the breed's large build, the Dogue de Bordeaux is set somewhat low to the ground and is not as tall as many of the other breed's within the Mastiff family. The breed has a short, fine and soft coat that comes in a variety of colorations. However, the breed's coat will commonly come in either a light fawn or a darker mahogany coloration.
