The Dying of the Light: Interval by Jason Kristopher Pdf

The world has ended, and the few who are left struggle day by day to survive. They hoped that the worst thing they would have to deal with in this new world would be the walkers, come to rip and tear and kill. They were wrong. There are worse things than zombies. A refuge for the last remnants of the United States has gone silent and dark, while another has succumbed to the basest parts of human nature. Yet all is not lost, for in the farthest and coldest corner of the globe, marooned in an icy prison, a scientist has made a stunning breakthrough. A desparate rescue mission is launched to bring back the one person who can save them all, but the trip is long and dangerous, and its fate is uncertain.

The Dark Interval by Padraic Killeen Pdf

Invoking key concepts from the philosophical writings of Gilles Deleuze and Giorgio Agamben, The Dark Interval examines a subtle but distinct iconography of passivity, stillness and profound self-affection that recurs across noir films of every era. In doing so, it identifies the emergence of a specific cinematic figure – the 'intervallic' noir protagonist exposed to the redemptive force of his or her own passion. Significantly, the book contextualises the iconography of film noir in relation to prior art-historical visual traditions, in particular earlier representations of melancholia and the saturnine, locating noir against a much broader canvas than has been the norm. Examining central noir films of the classic and modern era (The Killers, The Man Who Wasn't There) as well as films at the peripheries of noir (from Jacques Tourneur's Cat People to Wong Kar Wai's 2046), the book locates a series of iconographic gestures, performance traditions and affective tonalities at once specific to noir and yet resonant with a deeper cultural and philosophical heritage. It is a meditation that uniquely grapples with the look and the feel of noir, and which dares to detect a unique quality of 'beatitude' that runs through a certain strain of noir films. In doing so, it illuminates why film noir remains one of the most provocative and affecting visual milieus of our time.

The Intervals of Cinema by Jacques Rancière Pdf

The cinema, like language, can be said to exist as a system of differences. In his latest book the acclaimed philosopher Jacques Rancire relates cinema to literature and theatre. With literature, he argues, cinema takes its narrative conventions, while at the same time effacing its images and its philosophy; and it rejects theatre, while also fulfilling theatre's dream. Built on these contradictions, the cinema is the real, material space in which one feels moved by the spectacle of shadows. Thus for Rancire, the cinema is the always disappointed dream of a language of images.

The Dying Light by Henry Porter Pdf

A chilling police surveillance thriller from 'one of the masters of the genre' Sunday Telegraph At the funeral the bells of the church were rung open rather than half-muffled, as is usual for the dead. Kate Lockhart has come, along with corporate leaders, ministers and intelligence chiefs, to a beautiful town in the Welsh Marches to mourn her soul mate, David Eyam, the brightest government servant of his generation. All that remains of Eyam are the burnt fragments of a man killed far from home in a horrific explosion. Eyam has left a devastating legacy which certain people at the funeral are desperate to suppress - but Kate Lockhart is equal to Eyam's legacy. She becomes the focus of the state's paranoiac power and leads the local resistance to it, directed from beyond the grave by Eyam. And the state is no match for the genius of the dead... An incredibly prescient thriller set in the aftermath of the Snowden news story from the bestselling author of Brandenburg.

Poems: Brief Intervals by Bernard X Bovasso Pdf

[Back Cover] “The present work combines two different forms but of similar content: a poetic form and a dramatic form noted as “closet” drama because intended for reading rather than a staged production. In both cases erotic content is presented in allusion to a variety of metaphors overlapped in the erotic play of opposites. Any literal erotic content is thus ambivalent insofar as the sublime aspect of cuniunctio competes with its common and familiar demonstrations. Sourcebook in the History of Philosophy of Language by Margaret Cameron,Benjamin Hill,Robert J. Stainton Pdf

For the first time in English, this anthology offers a comprehensive selection of primary sources in the history of philosophy of language. Beginning with a detailed introduction contextualizing the subject, the editors draw out recurring themes, including the origin of language, the role of nature and convention in fixing form and meaning, language acquisition, ideal languages, varieties of meanings, language as a tool, and the nexus of language and thought, linking them to representative texts. The handbook moves on to offer seminal contributions from philosophers ranging from the pre-Socratics up to John Stuart Mill, preceding each major historical section with its own introductory assessment. With all of the most relevant primary texts on the philosophy of language included, covering well over two millennia, this judicious, and generous, selection of source material will be an indispensable research tool for historians of philosophy, as well as for philosophers of language, in the twenty-first century. A vital tool for researchers and contemporary philosophers, it will be a touchstone for much further research, with coverage of a long and varied tradition that will benefit today’s scholars and enhance their awareness of earlier contributions to the field.

No Place for Dying by Helen Stanton Chapple Pdf

This book shows how dying is a management problem for hospitals, occupying space but few billable encounters and of little interest to medical practice or quality control. An anthropologist and bioethicist with two decades of professional nursing experience, Helen Chapple goes beyond current work on hospital care to present fine-grained accounts of the clinicians, patients, and families who navigate this uncharted, untidy, and unpredictable territory between the highly choreographed project of rescue and the clinical culmination of death.
