Agricultural Policies and Soil Degradation in Western Canada by Aziz Bouzaher Pdf
Canada's 1991 Farm Income Protection Act introduced two major farm income stabilization programs, the Gross Revenue Insurance Plan (GRIP) and the Net Income Stabilization Account. To analyze the impact of GRIP and NISA on the economy and environment of western Canada, Agriculture Canada proposes an integrated systems approach including the Canadian Regional Agricultural Model (CRAM) and components for input substitution, policy, ecology, and trade-off analysis. This report outlines the integrated systems approach and the major rules and provisions of GRIP and NISA that will be explicitly modelled. It then describes the methodology for modifying CRAM and the environmental component that will be linked to CRAM to evaluate soil erosion impacts of the programs. Finally, the report describes economic and environmental model linkages and concludes with proposed policy runs.

Cover Cropping in Western Canada by Kevin R. Elmy Pdf
What is soil health and why is it so important? In short, healthy soil allows farmers to continue to produce our food safely and inexpensively, so it is vitally important to all of us and generations to come. Cover Cropping in Western Canada provides essential information for farmers who want to increase the fertility of their fields for increased production. While cover cropping is, as the author states, “not a silver bullet,” it is an important part of a whole system approach that can play a central part in bringing agricultural fields renewed health. For those who haven’t considered cover cropping, this easy-to-read reference guide offers basic information about the common issues that impact agricultural land and some strategies to improve its health. For those who are ready to consider cover cropping options, this compact reference guide provides detailed data about sixty-one species that can be planted to fulfill the producer’s goals. To complement goals and species selection, Cover Cropping in Western Canada discusses options for grain farming, benefits of grazing and generating hay and silage, the role cover crops can play in erosion control, nutrient building, nitrogen fixation, weed suppression, and more. Cover Cropping in Western Canada will help producers incorporate cover cropping into their production systems with confidence. The references discussed are observations from Western Canada but can be applied anywhere. Producers will understand how to set goals, pick appropriate species to meet those goals, and create a management plan to effectively integrate cover crops into their rotations. This is a must-have reference for producers who want to increase soil health and to help control greenhouse gas emissions.

Plant-Soil Interactions at Low pH: Principles and Management by R.A. Date,N.J. Grundon,G.E. Rayment,M.E. Probert Pdf
The understanding of plant-soil interactions in acid soils is important for improved food production in many parts of the world. The context of the book touches on basic and applied aspects of the physics, chemistry and biology of acid soils and their effect on growth of plants. It contains a large section on management of acid soils for plant (food) production and on socioeconomic aspects of management of acid soils. This is important because a large portion of the world's acid soils occurs in less developed countries. Plant-Soil Interactions at Low pH: Principles and Management contains a substantial number of papers, including nine invited reviews, presented at the Third International Symposium of Plant-Soil Interactions at Low pH. The major themes include chemistry and physics of acid soils, microbial and faunal activity in acid soils, mechanisms of acid tolerance of plants, selection and breeding of acid-tolerant plants, diagnosis and correction of acid soil infertility, socioeconomic aspects of acid soil management and management systems for agriculture, horticulture and forestry on acid soils.

Canadian Agricultural Policy and Prairie Agriculture by Murray E. Fulton,Kenneth A. Rosaasen,Andrew Schmitz,Economic Council of Canada Pdf
One of several background papers commissioned by the Council for a study on the future of the prairie grain economy, this study defines the crisis in prairie agriculture and evaluates the past impact of Canadian agricultural policy. The study describes and highlights the key economic characteristics of prairie agriculture; defines the income and debt crisis facing it; explains how the boom of the 1970s contributed to the crisis of the 1980s by influencing the level of debt; reviews and documents the major agricultural programs affecting prairie agriculture and determines the impact of those programs on the crisis and the health of the agricultural industry; and suggests options to deal with both the current crisis and the future viability of the prairie agricultural sector.
