A Letter from Grosvenor Square by John Gilbert Winant Pdf

In England’s darkest hours, John Winant, U.S. Ambassador, became to the British a symbol of American fellowship and support. They looked up from the still-smoking rubble of their homes and saw him standing strong with the King or with Winston Churchill. As Ambassador, his chief concern was not only immediate agreement and understanding between the two countries, but also long-term good relations. In the account of his stewardship, he not only shows American generosity, but stresses the less known—but not less important—contributions which the British made to us through reverse Lend-Lease.

Japanese Envoys in Britain, 1862-1964 by Ian Nish Pdf

Commissioned by the Japan Society as the companion volume to British Envoys in Japan, 1959-1972 (2004), this collection of essays on a century of official Japanese representation in the United Kingdom completes the history of bilateral diplomatic relations up to the mid-1960s, concluding with Ambassador Ohno Katsumi’s highly successful six-year assignment in 1964. In all, twelve authors, half of whom are Japanese , contribute to the work. In addition to the nineteen biographies, there are essays on the history of the Japanese Embassy buildings in London, an overview of Japanese envoys in Britain between 1862 and 1872 by Sir Hugh Cortazzi, as well as aspects of embassy life which illuminate some of the factors impacting on the life-style of residents in London in former times, including an entertaining personal memoir by Ayako Ishizaka of ‘A Diplomat’s Daughter in the 1930s’. By way of appendix, the volume concludes with a short history of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Gaimusho) up to the present day.

Red Mercury by M.W. Fletcher Pdf

What is Red Mercury and does it exist? Up until now, it has been looked at as mythical pure fusion bomb, which the Russians may well have developed. However, should it truly exist and should it fall into the wrong hands, it has the potential to cause destruction on an enormous scale. A secret Russian weapons research facility has sent a clandestine cargo on a flight out of the USSR to London and then on a British Airways flight to New York. The plane never makes it to the USA as it catches fire and goes down in the Atlantic, with all lives lost. Suspicions are raised about some of its cargo and MI5 hire an American salvage company to retrieve it. However once on American soil it mysteriously disappears. In several weeks time the Russian President will come to Washington to sign the SALT-1 agreement, with the American President. There are people from within both countries that do not want this to happen and they have devised a devastating plan, the consequences that may well start WW3. The US President and the Russian Prime Minister both contact the British Prime Minister asking for her help in the form of Max Storm and the OSC, working on the premise that they both have traitors amongst their respective communities and to utilise their own people would result in failure to stop the impending catastrophe. The OSC arrive covertly on US soil in an attempt to avert WW3. On top of this, a high profile IRA terrorist’s escapes custody and begins a reign of terror in London. Max Storm and the OSC are the UK's first and last line of offence.

A Very British Ending by Edward Wilson Pdf

A gripping espionage thriller about an establishment plot to take control of 1970s Britain, by a writer who is 'poised to inherit the mantle of John le Carre' 'The thinking person's John le Carré' Tribune 'Edward Wilson seems poised to inherit the mantle of John le Carré' Irish Independent 'More George Smiley than James Bond, Catesby will delight those readers looking for less blood and more intelligence in their spy thrillers' Publishers Weekly An MI6 officer, haunted by the ghosts of an SS atrocity, kills a Nazi war criminal in the ruins of a U-boat bunker. The German turns out to be a CIA asset being rat-lined to South America. As a hungry Britain freezes in the winter of 1947, a young cabinet minister negotiates a deal with Moscow trading Rolls-Royce jet engines for cattle fodder and wood. Both have made powerful enemies with long memories. The fates of the two men become entwined as one rises through MI6 and the other to Downing Street. And as Britain stumbles into the mid-1970s, a coup d'etat is imminent. A Very British Ending is the Wolf Hall of power games in modern Britain. Senior MI6 officers, Catesby and Bone, try to outwit a cabal of plotters trying to overthrow the Prime Minister. The author once again reveals the dark underside of the Secret State on both sides of the Atlantic. 'A fantastic read' Culture Matters 'The best espionage story you'll read this year or any other' Crime Review Praise for Edward Wilson: 'Stylistically sophisticated . . . Wilson knows how to hold the reader's attention' W.G. Sebald 'A reader is really privileged to come across something like this' Alan Sillitoe 'All too often, amid the glitzy gadgetry of the spy thriller, all the fast cars and sexual adventures, we lose sight of the essential seriousness of what is at stake. John le Carré reminds us, often, and so does Edward Wilson' Independent
