The Enlightenment Training Manual by Michael L. Fournier Pdf

Understanding how and why the mind creates its seemingly un-ending flow of discursive thoughts, words, pictures, and mind theatrics is the first step in quieting the mind and an essential step on the path to enlightenment. When the mind is able to comprehend that it is its own source of suffering, it can be trained to become a willing participant in bringing about a peaceful, contented, joyful mind and put and end to its self created suffering.

Enlightenment and the Enlightenment Intensive by Charles Berner,Yoah Wexler, Ph.d. Pdf

This is the second volume of essays and articles on enlightenment and the Enlightenment Intensive from the archive of Charles Berner. It spans the years from 1969 through 2005. I heard Berner say many times that his understanding of Truth evolved as his meditation experiences unfolded. He would advise "If you want to understand what I understands now, then you should look to my latest writings." These essays are placed in a chronological order so you can appreciate the evolution of his understanding. The book begins with a Forward written by Edrid who began his studies with Berner in the early 1960's. Edrid's first-hand recollections of Berner's universe and the beginning formulation of the Enlightenment Intensive is insightful and revealing. Chapter 1 is an article that first appeared in 1969. It is one of Berner's earliest writings on the subject of self enlightenment and the Enlightenment Intensive. Chapter 2, What Is and Is Not Enlightenment, was the first chapter of The Transmission of Truth, published in 1977. Chapter 3 is a first-person account of the experiences of a fictitious individual, Alan B. Dow, who attends an Enlightenment Intensive for the first time. Chapter 4, entitled, Charles in Enlightenment Land was originally a lecture given at an Enlightenment Intensive in the 1970's. Chapter 5, Levels of Enlightenment and Advice On How To Do The Enlightenment Technique, was also a lecture that Berner gave during a long Enlightenment Intensive in the early 1970's. Enlightenment is the title of Chapter 6. It is excerpted from the 2005 book, Consciousness of Truth. Bill Savoie wrote the final chapter entitled, About Charles Berner. In his essay Bill shares his experience and insights about Charles Berner and those early days from which the Enlightenment Intensive was formed.

The Evangelical Counter-Enlightenment by William R. Everdell Pdf

This contribution to the global history of ideas uses biographical profiles of 18th-century contemporaries to find what Salafist and Sufi Islam, Evangelical Protestant and Jansenist Catholic Christianity, and Hasidic Judaism have in common. Such figures include Muḥammad Ibn abd al-Waḥhab, Count Nikolaus Zinzendorf, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Israel Ba’al Shem Tov. The book is a unique and comprehensive study of the conflicted relationship between the “evangelical” movements in all three Abrahamic religions and the ideas of the Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment. Centered on the 18th century, the book reaches back to the third century for precedents and context, and forward to the 21st for the legacy of these movements. This text appeals to students and researchers in many fields, including Philosophy and Religion, their histories, and World History, while also appealing to the interested lay reader.

Kadam: Stages of the Path, Mind Training, and Esoteric Practice, Part One by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye Pdf

A comprehensive selection of texts central to the Kadam lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, including topics like Mind Training, Stages of the Path, and esoteric tantric instructions. The Treasury of Precious Instructions by Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, one of Tibet’s greatest Buddhist masters, is a shining jewel of Tibetan literature, presenting essential teachings from the entire spectrum of practice lineages that existed in Tibet. In its eighteen volumes, Kongtrul brings together some of the most important texts on key topics of Buddhist thought and practice as well as authoring significant new sections of his own. The Kadam lineage derives from the teachings and practices taught by the Indian master Atiśa and his Tibetan students. Atiśa spent twelve years in Tibet and left a scholarly and devotional lineage that would be significant to all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, but particularly the Geluk, the tradition of the Dalai Lamas, which fashioned themselves as the New Kadam tradition. Jamgön Kongtrul’s catalog to The Treasury of Precious Instructions classifies Kadam literature into five categories: treatise, instruction, esoteric practice, ancillary works, and associated works. The first two are the main topics covered in this volume: Lamrim, or Stages of the Path, and Lojong, or Mind Training. These two Kadam teachings continue to exert a significant influence on Tibetan Buddhism and therefore represent the legacy of the Kadam tradition. The first centers around “The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment,” written by the eleventh-century Indian master Atiśa who spent twelve years in Tibet, and this volume also includes stories of Atiśa’s life and travels. The second set of teachings consists of aphorisms known as the Seven-Point Mind Training, meant to be used as contemplative practices to develop compassion and transform the mind. These selections show not only the foundational texts of the Kadam tradition but also the widespread impact these teachings continued to have across traditions.

The third book, Our New Path of Self-Discovery, discusses the question of ‘Who am I, and why am I here’, the history of the ‘spiritual path’ imported from other cultures and religions, our new path of self-discovery for truth and enlightenment in our culture. In this fourth book, Our New Enlightened Culture, we broaden our scope and look at how the new path of self-discovery extends to the upliftment and enlightenment of our culture. We are a culture in search of its spirit, and the implications for our culture are massive as our perspective of reality expands. Many of those whose awareness is opening in this time of change will extend their consciousness to share in accepting responsibility for our new culture. Who are the new ‘Pathfinders’? The new ‘Pathfinders’ will share the new knowledge and help facilitate the acceptance and implementation of our new culture. If you are a pathfinder, you too may have asked ‘Who me? Why me?’ The key to the implementation is in the process: the elements of this new consciousness and culture will not come from one enlightened teacher who stands on the mountain and proclaims the truth. This new cultural consciousness will be manifested from within each of us: you, me, and the person next door. I wish you well in your work.

Enlightened Reform in Southern Europe and its Atlantic Colonies, c. 1750-1830 by Gabriel Paquette Pdf

Efforts to ascertain the influence of enlightenment thought on state action, especially government reform, in the long eighteenth century have long provoked stimulating scholarly quarrels. Generations of historians have grappled with the elusive intersections of enlightenment and absolutism, of political ideas and government policy. In order to complement, expand and rejuvenate the debate which has so far concentrated largely on Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, this volume brings together historians of Southern Europe (broadly defined) and its ultramarine empires. Each chapter has been explicitly commissioned to engage with a common set of historiographical issues in order to reappraise specific aspects of 'enlightened absolutism' and 'enlightened reform' as paradigms for the study of Southern Europe and its Atlantic empires. In so doing it engages creatively with pressing issues in the current historical literature and suggests new directions for future research. No single historian, working alone, could write a history that did justice to the complex issues involved in studying the connection between enlightenment ideas and policy-making in Spanish America, Brazil, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. For this reason, this well-conceived, balanced volume, drawing on the expertise of a small, carefully-chosen cohort, offers an exciting investigation of this historical debate.
