The Ethical Teaching of Jesus (Classic Reprint) by Charles Augustus Briggs Pdf

Excerpt from The Ethical Teaching of Jesus This book originated from a course of lectures, which were prepared for the students of the Union Theological Seminary, in the fulfilment of my duty as Professor of Biblical Theology. The field of Bib lical Theology may be divided into three divisions. Biblical Religion, Biblical Faith, and Biblical Ethics (see General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture pp. 604 sq). After the completion of the courses on Biblical Religion and Biblical Faith I undertook an inductive study of Biblical Ethics. This I found to be a comparatively unexplored field; for most scholars have devoted their attention to the central theme, the Biblical Faith: many to the Re ligion of the Old Testament; but few to the Ethics, either of the Old Testament, or the New Testament; and these few have for the most part considered the subject on the basis of selected passages for homi letical or practical purposes from the point of view of the ethical Philosophy, which they held. My atten tion was first given to the ethics of the Old Testa ment, after which I made a complete inductive study of the Ethics of Jesus. This study was revised sev eral times as the lectures were repeated to different classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ethical Christianity by Hugh Price Hughes Pdf

Excerpt from Ethical Christianity: A Series of Sermons Nothing is more remarkable and, from one point of view, more encouraging than the fact that every attack which has been made upon the Christian religion has been founded upon a total misconception of its nature. In our own day a great many persons, both educated and uneducated, have imagined themselves to be opponents of Christianity. But when their arguments and denunciations are carefully examined, it is found that what they have rejected is some perversion or caricature. Nothing is more common than to hear persons talking about "giving up" Christianity who have never had any real Christianity to give up; or, to speak more accurately, who have never given up anything really Christian which they were fortunate enough to possess. A short time ago one of the great apostles of Positivism astonished mankind by announcing that he had been a Christian in his youth, and then proceeded with the utmost naivete to disclose that by being a Christian in his youth he meant that when he was a boy he held certain metaphysical dogmas with respect to the creation of the universe and the nature of the soul! St. Paul's Ethical Teaching (Classic Reprint) by Rev William Martin Pdf

Excerpt from St. Paul's Ethical Teaching This short treatise was not written with a view to publication; but, at the instance of several friends, I have ventured to offer it to the public, deeply conscious that it only touches the fringes of a most important subject. The War has directed attention to many ethical questions, which will be the subject of much discussion in the future. The broad principles which underlie Christian ethics are fully stated in St. Paul's Epistles, and no apology is necessary for restating them in these critical days of our national life. I take this opportunity of expressing my grati tude to the tutors of Wolsey College, Oxford, for the help they have given me in preparing the. The Ethics of Jesus by Henry Churchill King Pdf

Excerpt from The Ethics of Jesus: Being the William Belden Noble Lectures for 1909 While I have tried to keep constantly in mind the ethical aspect of the teaching, as the one prob lem of this book, it Should not be forgotten that Jesus' teaching is so completely permeated with the religious spirit, that it is impossible wholly to ignore the religious and still do justice to the ethical teaching. Jesus has no dual standpoint, corresponding to a sharp separation of the two realms of the religious and the ethical. The Social Principles of Jesus (Classic Reprint) by Walter Rauschenbusch Pdf

Excerpt from The Social Principles of Jesus This book is not a life of Christ, nor an exposition of his religious teachings, nor a doctrinal statement about his per son and work. It is an attempt to formulate in simple proposi tions the fundamental convictions of Jesus about the social and ethical relations and duties of men. Our generation is profoundly troubled by the problems of organized society. The most active interest of serious men and women in the colleges is concentrated on them. We know that we are in deep need of moral light and spiritual inspiration in our gropings. There is an increasing realiza tion, too, that the salvation of society lies in the direction toward which Jesus led. And yet there is no Clear under standing of what he stood for. Those who have grown up under Christian teaching can sum up the doctrines of the Church readily, but the principles which we must under stand if we are to follow Jesus in the way of life, seem enveloped in a haze. The ordinary man sees clearly only Christ's law of love and the golden rule. This book seeks to bring to a point what we all vaguely know. Jesus Christ and the Christian Character (Classic Reprint) by Francis Greenwood Peabody Pdf

Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. Christian Ethics (Classic Reprint) by Robert Mackintosh Pdf

Excerpt from Christian Ethics This lack Of formal teaching is no accident still less is it a defect. The hampering letter is obsolete. Christians are to act from loving hearts, as led by God's Spirit. It is a grievous relapse when legalism becomes master of the Christian Church throughout the Middle Ages. On the other hand, there is room for Christian ethics. The disciples of Christ are to act from conscious intelligent deliberate choice. It is our duty as well as our privilege to study from every side the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, and toilearn lessons by means of reflective study. Only, let us remember that our task is secondary. Fracti cal godliness and personal conscientiousness come first. Conscience and Christ by Hastings Rashdall Pdf

Excerpt from Conscience and Christ: Six Lectures on Christian Ethics HE present lectures were delivered as the Haskell Lectures in the Theological Seminary of Oberlin College, Ohio, during the autumn of 1913. They would have been published earlier but for the war. They were delivered very much as they stand, with a few omissions. I have thought it best to add considerable notes and appendices rather than to enlarge the lectures to an extent which would in several cases have involved complete re-writing.
