The Perfect Storm of the European Crisis by Ruxandra Iordache,Dan Dungaciu Pdf
The most significant phenomenon occurring around us today is the European crisis. As well as being a “total social phenomenon” as classical French sociologist Émile Durkheim would have said, it also affects all the levels of our lives—be they political, economic, cultural or social. Nothing remains untouched. In other words, it represents a “perfect storm”. This volume brings together the contributions of twenty authors, scientists from the “Ion I.C. Brătianu” Institute of Political Sciences and International Relations of the Romanian Academy, in response to this challenge. Using an expression that is becoming more abundantly associated with Europe, namely “the perfect storm”, the book decodes multiple layers of the crisis, whether they relate to migrants, terrorism, Brexit, the economic crisis of the Eurozone, the Turkish challenge, Russian pressures, TTIP, the resurrection of populism, or the (intermittent) hysteria of the European media.

Silicon Europe by Marco Bardazzi Pdf
Semiconductors and chips have become increasingly indispensable, present in everything from smartphones and cars to home appliances and medical devices. However, we often fail to recognize the significant technological and creative efforts that go into creating these “life companions.” While it’s commonly assumed that technological innovations are exclusively produced in Asian factories or American laboratories, few realize that there has been a “Silicon Europe” of industrial and technological excellence across France and Italy for decades. At the heart of this region lies STMicroelectronics, a world-leading chip company. Through the history of ST and European microelectronics, journalist and writer Marco Bardazzi takes readers on an incredible journey that documents the ideas, inventions, stories, and people behind the technologies and objects that have revolutionized our lives in recent decades. Bardazzi also sheds light on the cutting-edge technology sector that is pivotal to new generations and future jobs, in which Europe is playing an essential role.

This study gives an overview of the obligations of flag States and the control of their compliance with such obligations. It outlines the main obligations as to maritime safety and security as well as marine pollution prevention under international as well as European law and shows the still existing enforcement deficits vis-a-vis non-complying flag States as well as substandard ships. Some of the main developments to counter these deficits such as the Voluntary Member State Audit Scheme on the IMO level or the Third Maritime Safety Package on the EU level are taken into account.

The Aftermath of the Global Crisis in the European Union by Beáta Farkas Pdf
“This collective volume is undoubtedly a major contribution to understanding the causes and consequences of the crisis of the Euro-zone, with a special emphasis on the implications of new and not yet EMU members. A skilful combination of contrasting theoretical and policy perspectives, a refreshing interchange among academics and practitioners from a number of countries, it is a must reading for anyone seriously interested in the political economy of crisis and reform in Europe.” – László Csaba, Professor of International Political Economy, Central European University and Corvinus University of Budapest; Past President, the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies “This book offers a refreshing analysis of what is rapidly becoming Europe’s lost decade. The authors, all established experts in their fields, see light at the end of the tunnel, but it seems quite distant.” – André Sapir, Senior Fellow, Bruegel; Professor of Economics, Université libre de Bruxelles “The papers included in the volume uphold the pressing question of whether Europe can resume its role as a ‘growth and convergence engine’. Issues of growth, macro-stabilization and employment in the economically diversified internal market come in this context to the fore of the discussion. The editor of the volume, Professor Beata Farkas, skilfully brings together research focusing on diverse facets of the European economies in order to address questions such as: (1) Does one size fit all? (2) How can we change the EU budget to make it more effective? (3) Can Europe learn some lessons from the two lost decades in Japan? (4) Is inflation targeting a proper approach in defining monetary policy? (5) How do we conduct an effective fiscal policy? The added value of the volume consists in diversified methodological and conceptual perspectives employed to address the problems at hand. Ideas and arguments are presented in a novel and interdisciplinary manner. As such, the discussion that unfolds throughout the volume will be stimulating for researchers, decision-makers in the government and those in the corporate world. My recommendation is simple: take the book and read it . . .” – Katarzyna Żukrowska, Professor of International Economics and Political Science, Head of the International Security Department, Warsaw School of Economics; Member of the Prognoses Committee, Polish Academy of Science

The Palgrave Handbook of EU Crises by Marianne Riddervold,Jarle Trondal,Akasemi Newsome Pdf
This handbook comprehensively explores the European Union’s institutional and policy responses to crises across policy domains and institutions – including the Euro crisis, Brexit, the Ukraine crisis, the refugee crisis, as well as the global health crisis resulting from COVID-19. It contributes to our understanding of how crisis affects institutional change and continuity, decision-making behavior and processes, and public policy-making. It offers a systematic discussion of how the existing repertoire of theories understand crisis and how well they capture times of unrest and events of disintegration. More generally, the handbook looks at how public organizations cope with crises, and thus probes how sustainable and resilient public organizations are in times of crisis and unrest.

The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea by Sebastian Junger Pdf
"There is nothing imaginary about Junger's book; it is all terrifyingly, awesomely real." —Los Angeles Times It was the storm of the century, boasting waves over one hundred feet high—a tempest created by so rare a combination of factors that meteorologists deemed it "the perfect storm." In a book that has become a classic, Sebastian Junger explores the history of the fishing industry, the science of storms, and the candid accounts of the people whose lives the storm touched. The Perfect Storm is a real-life thriller that makes us feel like we've been caught, helpless, in the grip of a force of nature beyond our understanding or control. The Church of the Perfect Storm by Leonard Sweet Pdf
The church is heading into a “perfect storm” of cultural forces. Will you sink beneath the waves, or ride the winds of the Spirit? An array of cultural forces is coming together to present the church with unprecedented challenge and unequaled opportunity. Such “category 5" realities as postmodernism, postChristendom attacks on belief in God, and the threat of global warming have coalesced to make a “perfect storm” that will leave people uncertain of their place in the world, and all they have previously believed in. Like the disciples when Jesus calmed the storm, the church can cower and cry out for relief. Or, when everything is spinning and whirling in the wind, the church can go out to meet the storm, embrace the gale, . . . and pass out kites. From the Circuit Rider review: "Like other books Sweet has written and compiled, The Church of the Perfect Storm is thought-provoking and compelling. The material flows in such a way that allows readers to grasp the gravity of the situation. However, as with most futuristic material, there is also a sense in which readers may want to know: 'Okay, now what? Where do we need to steer this ship? Are mainline and evangelical churches so off-course as to fail to weather the rising tides that are here and soon coming?' Readers of this volume may enjoy the description of a post-Christendom world, but they may also want to know more about the prescription for the days ahead. (Click here to read the entire review.)

Control and Systems Engineering by Aly El-Osery,Jeff Prevost Pdf
This book is a tribute to 40 years of contributions by Professor Mo Jamshidi who is a well known and respected scholar, researcher, and educator. Mo Jamshidi has spent his professional career formalizing and extending the field of large-scale complex systems (LSS) engineering resulting in educating numerous graduates specifically, ethnic minorities. He has made significant contributions in modeling, optimization, CAD, control and applications of large-scale systems leading to his current global role in formalizing system of systems engineering (SoSE), as a new field. His books on complex LSS and SoSE have filled a vacuum in cyber-physical systems literature for the 21st Century. His contributions to ethnic minority engineering education commenced with his work at the University of New Mexico (UNM, Tier-I Hispanic Serving Institution) in 1980 through a NASA JPL grant. Followed by several more major federal grants, he formalized a model for educating minorities, called VI-P Pyramid where K-12 students(bottom of pyramid) to doctoral (top of pyramid) students form a seamless group working on one project. Upper level students mentor lower ones on a sequential basis. Since 1980, he has graduated over 114 minority students consisting of 62 Hispanics, 34 African Americans., 15 Native Americans, and 3 Pacific Islanders. This book contains contributed chapters from colleagues, and former and current students of Professor Jamshidi. Areas of focus are: control systems, energy and system of systems, robotics and soft computing.

A surge of political trends and upheavals all over the world confronts German foreign policy with a world that is dramatically different from Berlin Republic unification in 1990. Germany is suddenly faced with another historical shift that is starting to shake the bedrock of its foreign policy. A council of experts for strategic foresight can address Germany's strategic cultural deficit, its civilian power fixation, its resorts principle of ministerial independence, and its coalition governance conflicts.
