The Exodus Breaking Cycles and Changing Lives by Rev. Patrina M. Wright Pdf

Each year in the United States an estimated two to six million women are victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual, fi nancial, spiritual and psychological abuse. Domestic violence is about control, manipulation and domination. Ninetyfive percent of assaults on spouses or ex-spouses are committed by men against women. Too afraid and too shame to speak up, there are countless numbers of women sitting in Churches all across America suffering in silence. Victims and perpetrators are from all ages, racial, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, educational, occupational, geographic, and religious groups. If you or someone you know has ever experienced domestic violence you are in need of a personal, life changing encounter with a powerful God. One who delights in healing wounds and setting the captive free. The Exodus is that kind of encounter- its about coming face to face with a Holy God as He does those things that you cannot do for yourself.

Breaking Away From Broken Windows by Ralph Taylor Pdf

In Breaking Away from Broken Windows Ralph Taylor uses data on recent Baltimore crime-reduction efforts to attack the 'broken windows' thesis--that is, the currently fashionable notion that by reducing or eliminating superficial signs of disorder (dilapidated buildings, graffiti, incivil behavior by teenagers, etc.), urban police deparments can make significant and lasting reductions in crime. Taylor argues that such measures, while useful, are only a partial solution to the problem at hand. His data supports a materialist view: changes in levels of physical decay, superficial social disorder, and racial composition do not lead to higher crime, while economic decline does. He contends that the Baltimore example shows that in order to make real, long-term reductions in crime, urban politicians, businesses, and community leaders must work together to improve the economic fortunes of those living in high-crime areas.

Changing Welfare by Rachel A. Gordon,Herbert J. Walberg Pdf

Changing Welfare is concerned with the sweeping changes that took place in public assistance programs at the end of the 20th century and the way in which the original and reformed versions of these programs relate to the well-being of children and their families. The authors critically review the original conceptualizations and the new directions of programs offering cash assistance, food assistance, health insurance, and child protection services to low-income and disabled children and their families - thus, changes in the welfare programs themselves. And throughout, their concern is with whether and how these programs alter the opportunities for the development of the children targeted by these programs - thus, changes in the welfare of children and their families. The objective of each chapter of the book is to rigorously highlight key theoretical and research issues, including the identification of major empirical findings and unanswered questions. Wherever relevant, the chapters connect theory and research to policy and practice, pointing to recommendations and challenges for the future including alternative approaches for research, policy and practice. Changing Welfare is a valuable reference for practitioners and policy makers who are concerned with children and child-related issues, psychologists, sociologists, social workers, social program administrators, and students in psychology, social work, sociology, political science, and education.

T&T Clark Handbook of Christian Theology and Climate Change by Hilda P. Koster,Ernst M. Conradie Pdf

The T&T Clark Handbook of Christian Theology and Climate Change entails a wide-ranging conversation between Christian theology and various other discourses on climate change. Given the far-reaching complicity of "North Atlantic Christianity" in anthropogenic climate change, the question is whether it can still collaborate with and contribute to ongoing mitigation and adaptation efforts. The main essays in this volume are written by leading scholars from within North Atlantic Christianity and addressed primarily to readers in the same context; these essays are critically engaged by respondents situated in other geographic regions, minority communities, non-Christian traditions, or non-theological disciplines. Structured in seven main parts, the handbook explores: 1) the need for collaboration with disciplines outside of Christian theology to address climate change; 2) the need to find common moral ground for such collaboration; 3) the difficulties posed by collaborating with other Christian traditions from within; 4) the questions that emerge from such collaboration for understanding the story of God's work; and 5) God's identity and character; 6) the implications of such collaboration for ecclesial praxis; and 7) concluding reflections examining whether this volume does justice to issues of race, gender, class, other animals, religious diversity, geographical divides and carbon mitigation. This rich ecumenical, cross-cultural conversation provides a comprehensive and in-depth engagement with the theological and moral challenges raised by anthropogenic climate change.
