The Image of Modern Man in T. S. Eliot's Poetry by Mariwan Nasradeen Hasan Barzinji Pdf

The Image of Modern Man in T. S. Eliot's Poetry The book , presents an original understanding of The Image of Modern Man in T. S. Eliots complex and difficult poems in an easy and understandable way. Eliots vision of the Modern Man and the modern world is depicted throughout Eliots most well-known poems. Eliot was criticized by some critics for the quality of his work. The aim of this book is to show what an excellent and successful writer he is, to reveal the value and the contemporaneity of his work. His poetry is highly evaluated for its unique way of depicting the Modern humanity by realizing their problems as well as finding solutions for them. The book is a great help not only for students, but also for researchers as the writer has spent much time in reading Eliots Poems. He has also written an ample introduction about modernism, modernity, modern literature and modern poetry, which might be enough to understand the rise of modern poetry. ... All of Eliots poems especially The Waste Land has presented readers with all the aspects of the modern life. Life is depicted as a mirror, broken and shattered into pieces as it is clear in the different parts of the poem. Eliot unlike many poets did not leave the modern man lost in despair but he finds them, their peace of mind by having a true and stable faith as well as their turning to God. The only solution for the entire problems of modern man is to turn to God and neglect the world that completely occupied them spiritually. ...Modern man has lost his values especially women by only looking after children, many of them turned to prostitution because they did not have any source of income; therefore, they used that as a way to earn money to maintain life. These are the characteristics of the modern city, which are shared by all the countries, especially Europe. Eliot insists on the necessity of turning from world to God. He believed that God can solve their problems, because man or any other earthly power could not change that gloomy and aimless life, which modern man complained against.

Reading the Difficulties by Thomas Fink,Judith Halden-Sullivan Pdf

The bold essays that make up Reading the Difficulties offer case studies in and strategies for reading innovative poetry. Definitions of what constitutes innovative poetry are innumerable and are offered from every quarter. Some critics and poets argue that innovative poetry concerns free association (John Ashbery), others that experimental poetry is a “re-staging” of language (Bruce Andrews) or a syntactic and cognitive break with the past (Ron Silliman and Lyn Hejinian). The tenets of new poetry abound. But what of the new reading that such poetry demands? Essays in Reading the Difficulties ask what kinds of stances allow readers to interact with verse that deliberately removes many of the comfortable cues to comprehension—poetry that is frequently nonnarrative, nonrepresentational, and indeterminate in subject, theme, or message. Some essays in Thomas Fink and Judith Halden-Sullivan’s collection address issues of reader reception and the way specific stances toward reading support or complement the aesthetic of each poet. Others suggest how we can be open readers, how innovative poetic texts change the very nature of reader and reading, and how critical language can capture this metamorphosis. Some contributors consider how the reader changes innovative poetry, what language reveals about this interaction, which new reading strategies unfold for the audiences of innovative verse, and what questions readers should ask of innovative verse and of events and experiences that we might bring to reading it. Resistance to Science in Contemporary American Poetry by Bryan Walpert Pdf

This book examines types of resistance in contemporary poetry to the authority of scientific knowledge, tracing the source of these resistances to both their literary precedents and the scientific zeitgeists that helped to produce them. Walpert argues that contemporary poetry offers a palimpsest of resistance, using as case studies the poets Alison Hawthorne Deming, Pattiann Rogers, Albert Goldbarth, and Joan Retallack to trace the recapitulation of romantic arguments (inherited from Keats, Shelly, and Coleridge, which in turn were produced in part in response to Newtonian physics), modernist arguments (inherited from Eliot and Pound, arguments influenced in part by relativity and quantum theory), and postmodernist arguments (arguments informed by post-structuralist theory, e.g. Barthes, Derrida, Foucault, with affinities to arguments for the limitations of science in the philosophy, sociology, and rhetoric of science). Some of these poems reveal the discursive ideologies of scientific language—reveal, in other words, the performativity of scientific language. In doing so, these poems themselves can also be read as performative acts and, therefore, as forms of intervention rather than representation. Reading Retallack alongside science studies scholar Karen Barad, the book concludes by proposing that viewing knowledge as a form of intervention, rather than representation, offers a bridge between contemporary poetry and science.
