The Education of Clarence Three Stars by Philip Burnham Pdf

In The Education of Clarence Three Stars Philip Burnham tells the life story of the remarkable Packs the Dog, a member of the Minneconjou Lakotas who was born in 1864 east of the Black Hills. His father, Yellow Knife, died when the boy was five, and the family eventually enrolled at Pine Ridge Agency with the Oglalas under an uncle’s name, Three Stars. In 1879 Packs the Dog joined the first class of Indian students to be admitted to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. An enthusiastic student, Clarence Three Stars, as he would come to be known, was one of five Lakota children who volunteered to stay at Carlisle after the three-year plan of instruction was finished—though he eventually left the school in frustration. Three Stars returned to Pine Ridge and married Jennie Dubray, another Carlisle veteran, and they had seven children. The life of Lakota advocate Three Stars spanned a time of dramatic change for Native Americans, from the pre-reservation period through the Dawes Act of 1887 until just before the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. Three Stars was a teacher, interpreter, catechist, lawyer, and politician who lived through the federal policy of American Indian assimilation in its many guises, including boarding school education, religious conversion, land allotment, and political reorganization. He used the fundamentals of his own boarding school education to advance the welfare of the Oglala Lakota people, even when his efforts were deemed threatening or subversive. His dedication to justice, learning, and self-governance informed a distinguished career of classroom excellence and political advocacy on his home reservation of Pine Ridge.

The Bona Fide Legend of Cool Papa Bell by Lonnie Wheeler Pdf

The ï¬?rst full biography of the star Negro Leaguer and Hall of Famer James “Cool Papa” Bell (1903–1991) was a legend in black baseball, a lightning fast switch hitter elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. Bell’s speed was extraordinary; as Satchel Paige famously quipped, he was so fast he could flip a light switch and be in bed before the room got dark. In The Bona Fide Legend of Cool Papa Bell, experienced baseball writer and historian Lonnie Wheeler recounts the life of this extraordinary player, a key member of some of the greatest Negro League teams in history. Born to sharecroppers in Mississippi, Bell was part of the Great Migration, and in St. Louis, baseball saved Bell from a life working in slaughterhouses. Wheeler charts Bell’s ups and downs in life and in baseball, in the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, where he went to escape American racism and MLB’s color line. Rich in context and suffused in myth, this is a treat for fans of baseball history.

The Second Coming of the Star Gods by Page Bryant Pdf

Set amidst the haunting, mysterious beauty of Ancient Egypt, The Second Coming of the Star Gods is an epic tale of magic, political intrigue, and mythology. Rich in historical and mystical detail, the story centers on Khem and Tiye, two young apprentice priestesses in the Temple of the Sun. As the girls are initiated into the secret arts of dream interpretation, astronomy, and astral travel, a battle for the great empire’s throne is being waged between the Pharaoh and his half-brother--a battle in which the young apprentices will unwittingly play the decisive role. Engaging and hypnotic, The Second Coming of the Star Gods creates characters and a world so real you won’t want to soon leave. She masterfully recreates Egypt’s 4th Dynasty--the Pyramid Age--a time in which gods, goddesses, and magicians were the true rulers of the land.

Witness by Waggoner, Josephine Pdf

¾–Josephine Waggonerês writings offer a unique perspective on the Lakota. Witness will become a widely referenced primary source. Emily Levine has meticulously examined all known collections of Waggonerês manuscripts, sometimes comparing handwritten drafts with multiple typed copies to preserve information in full. Levineês extensive notes are well chosen and informative. Witness will interest both specialist and popular audiences.”ãRaymond DeMallie, Chancellorsê Professor of Anthropology and American Indian Studies at Indiana University¾ During the 1920s and 1930s, Josephine Waggoner (1871_1943), a Lakota woman who had been educated at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, grew increasingly concerned that the history and culture of her people were being lost as elders died without passing along their knowledge. A skilled writer, Waggoner set out to record the lifeways of her people and correct much of the misinformation about them spread by white writers, journalists, and scholars of the day. To accomplish this task, she traveled to several Lakota and Dakota reservations to interview chiefs, elders, traditional tribal historians, and other tribal members, including women.¾¾ Published for the first time and augmented by extensive annotations, Witness offers a rare participantês perspective on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Lakota and Dakota life. The first of Waggonerês two manuscripts presented here includes extraordinary firsthand and as-told-to historical stories by tribal members, such as accounts of life in the Powder River camps and at the agencies in the 1870s, the experiences of a mixed-blood HÏ?kpap?a girl at the first off-reservation boarding school, and descriptions of traditional beliefs. The second manuscript consists of Waggonerês sixty biographies of Lakota and Dakota chiefs and headmen based on eyewitness accounts and interviews with the men themselves. Together these singular manuscripts provide new and extensive information on the history, culture, and experiences of the Lakota and Dakota peoples.
