The Foundations of Morality by Stanley Leathes Pdf

Excerpt from The Foundations of Morality: Being Discourses on the Ten Commandments With Special Reference to Their Origin and Authority I Have tried in these discourses to estimate the kind of natural and inherent testimony that is borne by the Mosaic Decalogue to its own authority and origin. We find the Ten Commandments accepted as the basis of moral and social life, in the most civilised nations of the world. Why is this? Why do their enactments and prohibitions receive the common consent and acquiescence of mankind ? Is there any reason why they should continue to do so? Is there any reason why they should not be repealed? Can we be sure that this common consent and acquiescence will not be withheld from them after a time? And if it will not, why will it not? The Decalogue by Robert Gillan Pdf

Excerpt from The Decalogue: A Series of Discourses on the Ten Commandments That portion of Scripture on which we are about to enter is universally known, and is more frequently repeated than any other except our Lord's Prayer. And yet it has been rarely selected as a topic for distinct discussion. So much of what has been written on it, labours under the disadvantage of a diction, which is somewhat obsolete. So much more is found in forms and combinations which render the remarks so far inaccessible to the general reader. Then, the recent publications on the Decalogue, professing a more popular tendency, are few; and hitherto, at least so far as ascertained, these seem to have migrated in small numbers to this part of the country. The Commandments, indeed, are excellently defined in sundry Catechisms, and learnedly explained in many Commentaries; but these, though invaluable, do not satisfy the larger wish of the soul. In such circumstances, the Author has been induced to issue the present Volume - to reproduce through the press what, with many emendations, was first delivered from the pulpit. The aspect of morality, as now seen in politics, in commerce, and in common life, has farther prompted him to undertake the commanded duty of "crying aloud, and not sparing, while showing the people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins." Bible and Cinema by Adele Reinhartz Pdf

Bible and Cinema: An Introduction is a comprehensive examination of how the Bible has been used and represented in mainstream cinema to develop its plots, characters, and themes. The book considers two general types of films: Bible movies that retell biblical stories, such as the Exodus and the life of Jesus, and Bible-related movies that make use of biblical books, stories, verses, and figures, and Bibles themselves to tell non-biblical, often fictional, narratives. Topics covered include: the contribution of Bible and Bible-related movies to the history of the Bible’s reception; the ways in which filmmakers make use of scripture to address and reflect their own time and place; the Bible as a vehicle through which films can address social and political issues, reflect human experiences and emotions, explore existential issues such as evil and death, and express themes such as destruction and redemption; the role of the Bible as a source of ethics and morality, and how this role is both perpetuated and undermined in a range of contemporary Hollywood films; and film as a medium for experiences of transcendence, and the role of the Bible in creating such experiences. This thoroughly updated second edition includes insightful analysis of films such as Noah, Gods and Men, Mary Magdalene, and The Shawshank Redemption, paying attention to visual and aural elements as well as plot, character, and dialogue. The book also includes pedagogical resources including discussions of film theory, as well as key words and discussion questions. Teachers, students, and anyone interested in the intersection of Bible and cinema will find this an invaluable guide to a growing field.
