The Intimacies of Four Continents by Lisa Lowe Pdf

In this uniquely interdisciplinary work, Lisa Lowe examines the relationships between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- centuries, exploring the links between colonialism, slavery, imperial trades and Western liberalism. Reading across archives, canons, and continents, Lowe connects the liberal narrative of freedom overcoming slavery to the expansion of Anglo-American empire, observing that abstract promises of freedom often obscure their embeddedness within colonial conditions. Race and social difference, Lowe contends, are enduring remainders of colonial processes through which “the human” is universalized and “freed” by liberal forms, while the peoples who create the conditions of possibility for that freedom are assimilated or forgotten. Analyzing the archive of liberalism alongside the colonial state archives from which it has been separated, Lowe offers new methods for interpreting the past, examining events well documented in archives, and those matters absent, whether actively suppressed or merely deemed insignificant. Lowe invents a mode of reading intimately, which defies accepted national boundaries and disrupts given chronologies, complicating our conceptions of history, politics, economics, and culture, and ultimately, knowledge itself.

The Four Continents by John Ralston Saul,Keith Goulet,Eugene Richard Atleo Pdf

The Four Continents is comprised of a series of paintings made between 2012 and 2016. In this series, Monkman takes as his point of departure Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's epic frescoes commissioned for a private residence in Würzburg, Germany. The centrepiece of the Tiepolo series represented a day in the life of the Greek god, Apollo, with the four continents allegorized in peripheral scenes. In Monkman's reinterpretation, each continent is personified by a Two-Spirit sovereign with Miss Chief playing the roles of Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. Tiepolo's allegory is updated to include architectural wonders and notable figures from history amidst chaotic crowds.

Henry Lawson, V. S. Naipaul, Nadine Gordimer and Chinua Achebe are respectively Australian, Caribbean, South African and Nigerian, yet they all write in English. The 'English' literature of the ex-colonies is proving to be the most interesting and innovative of our times: this volume offers a significant example of its vitality and originality. As Salman Rushdi said, 'the Empire writes back'.

Life in Four Continents by Prakash Vinod Joshi Pdf

The highest accolade I can give Prakash is to say he is a humanitarian. He has great empathy for all kinds of people he encountered in east Africa where he grew up, in the United Kingdom where he studied Industrial Chemistry, and in Canada where he makes his home today and works with Metro Testing and Engineering Services Limited as a Senior Materials Engineering Technologist. He is also an internationalist who seeks to understand the richness of the human spirit through great spiritual leaders past and present like Mahatma Gandhi of India, Dalai Lama of Tibet, the Reverend Desmond Tutu of South Africa, and Spiritual Chiefs of our Native North American Indians. He has given back to his community in Canada and is a respected member of his profession. - Virgil Dias (From the New River Free Press International) I have just finished your book while sitting by the pool. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I like the way you presented the story and the honesty of the message. I can totally see you welcoming a stranger to your home as you did on several occasions to provide them with comforts at the expense of you and your family. In fact, the message you leave the reader with you is became richer for having the experience to assist one less fortunate than you. Well done my friend! Undoubtably you have taught your children and those close to you what it means to be a special person who demonstrates a real love for life. All the best, Rob Deverall

The Politics of Culture in the Shadow of Capital by Lisa Lowe,David Lloyd Pdf

Global in scope, but refusing a familiar totalizing theoretical framework, the essays in The Politics of Culture in the Shadow of Capital demonstrate how localized and resistant social practices—including anticolonial and feminist struggles, peasant revolts, labor organizing, and various cultural movements—challenge contemporary capitalism as a highly differentiated mode of production. Reworking Marxist critique, these essays on Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, and Europe advance a new understanding of "cultural politics" within the context of transnational neocolonial capitalism. This perspective contributes to an overall critique of traditional approaches to modernity, development, and linear liberal narratives of culture, history, and democratic institutions. It also frames a set of alternative social practices that allows for connections to be made between feminist politics among immigrant women in Britain, women of color in the United States, and Muslim women in Iran, Egypt, Pakistan, and Canada; the work of subaltern studies in India, the Philippines, and Mexico; and antiracist social movements in North and South America, the Caribbean, and Europe. These connections displace modes of opposition traditionally defined in relation to the modern state and enable a rethinking of political practice in the era of global capitalism. Contributors. Is China a new trend setter? Do values matter? Are global democratic rules a possibility? These are some of the key questions addressed in the volume.

The State and the Grassroots by Alejandro Portes,Patricia Fernández-Kelly Pdf

Whereas most of the literature on migration focuses on individuals and their families, this book studies the organizations created by immigrants to protect themselves in their receiving states. Comparing eighteen of these grassroots organizations formed across the world, from India to Colombia to Vietnam to the Congo, researchers from the United States, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Spain focus their studies on the internal structure and activities of these organizations as they relate to developmental initiatives. The book outlines the principal positions in the migration and development debate and discusses the concept of transnationalism as a means of resolving these controversies.

Tracking the Serpent by Janine Pommy Vega Pdf

These are the true-life adventures of a woman who ranges over four continents, endeavoring to go beyond the limits of ordinary life. Recovering from an accident, she goes to Glastonbury, where she finds energy portrayed in ancient earthworks as a snake coiled in concentric circles around a hill. To walk this spiral is called threading the maze, which means both to ascend and to go deep within. This becomes a guiding emblem of her pilgrimages to sites of female spiritual and temporal power, from the Irish countryside to the Amazon jungle to the high mountain cultures of Nepal. Janine Pommy Vega, Beat Generation writer, performer, and musician, is the author of twelve books. For many years she has worked with Poets in the Schools, and she is a member of PEN's Prison Writing Committee.
