Area-Wide Management of Fruit Fly Pests by Diana Perez-Staples,Francisco Diaz-Fleischer,Pablo Montoya,Maria Teresa Vera Pdf

Fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) pests have a profound impact on horticultural production and economy of many countries. It is fundamental to understand their biology and evaluate methods for their suppression, containment, or eradication. Area-Wide Management of Fruit Fly Pests comprises contributions from scientists from around the world on several species of tephritids working on diverse subjects with a focus on area-wide management of these pests. The first three sections of the book explore aspects of the biology, ecology, physiology, behavior, taxonomy, and morphology of fruit flies. The next two sections provide evidence on the efficacy of attractants, risk assessment, quarantine, and post-harvest control methods. The fifth and sixth sections examine biological control methods such as the Sterile Insect Technique and the use of natural enemies of fruit flies. The seventh section focuses on area-wide integrated pest management and action programs. Finally, the eighth section examines social, economic, and policy issues of action programs aimed at involving the wider community in the control of these pests and facilitate the development of control programs. Features: Presents information on the biology of tephritid flies. Provides knowledge on the use of natural enemies of fruit flies for their biological control. Includes research results on models and diets used for the Sterile Insect Technique. Reports developments on the chemical ecology of fruit flies that contribute to make control methods more specific and efficient. Reviews subjects such as Holistic Pest Management and Area-Wide Management Programs including social, economic, and policy issues in various countries. Trapping guidelines for area-wide fruit fly programmes by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

These Trapping Guidelines for Fruit Flies of Economic Importance provide strategic guidance and direction on where and how to implement surveys in support of fruit fly control and quarantine activities. This document is the summation of recommendations put forth by a multi-national group of fruit fly workers that has the objective of providing objective information on fruit fly survey tools to NPPOs and industry in FAO and IAEA Member States. These Trapping Guidelines are to be considered as a ‘working’ document to be regularly updated as survey techniques continue to improve and experience in fruit fly control programmes evolves.

Guidelines on phytosanitary procedures for area-wide management of fruit fly pests by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

This guideline describes the most widely used classic and modern phytosanitary procedures for the management of fruit flies that infest fruits and vegetables and that are of quarantine and economic importance, specifically species of the genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera, Ceratitis, Dacus, Rhagoletis and Zeugodacus. Pest management can be aimed at the native species of fruit flies or to prevent the introduction, establishment and spread of non-native species. This document is the first comprehensive guideline developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the united Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for area-wide fruit fly pest management including area-wide suppression, containment, eradication, and exclusion strategies. It is a much-needed complement to the already published FAO/IAEA guidelines for fruit fly survey “Trapping Guidelines for Area-wide Fruit Fly Programmes” and “Fruit Sampling Guidelines for Area-Wide Fruit Fly Programmes”.

Fruit Flies by Martin Aluja,Pablo Liedo Pdf

Fruit flies are enormously important economic pests, as California has learned over the past few years (remember the Mediterranean Fruit Fly?). The problem is expected to get worse, and issues of both basic research and control measures are very important for this pest. This book is the edited, camera-ready proceedings of a recent international symposium on fruit flies of economic importance. It covers current knowledge of fruit fly physiology, genetics, morphology and behavior. It discusses action programs for controlling and using fruit flies in agronomy, as well as the problem of fruit flies in the fruit growing industry.

Fruit Sampling Guidelines for Area-Wide Fruit Fly Programmes by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

Population survey is a basic component of any area-wide integrated pest management programme. Pest surveillance measures have to be practical, cost-effective and provide reliable information to action programme managers. Fruit fly trapping provides useful information on the presence or absence of the pest, and on its relative spatial distribution and abundance. However, performance and thus effectiveness of trapping systems can be affected by extrinsic factors including changing environmental and ecological conditions. Under certain conditions, fruit sampling becomes a suitable tool for population sampling. For example, at the beginning or end of the fruiting season when fewer mature fruits are still available on the trees, larvae could be more easily detected. Fruit sampling also becomes an important pest detection tool in areas where sterile flies are being continuously released and where low-density trapping is kept to avoid high sterile fly recapture rate and where traps are aimed basically at monitoring the released sterile flies.

Fruit Fly Pests by Bruce A. McPheron,Gary J. Steck Pdf

A book of national and international importance, Fruit Fly Pests is an exhaustive compendium of information (with data provided by more than 100 contributors) that will appeal to a wide variety of readers. With huge losses experienced annually from fruit fly devastation, information on these high-profile insects is important to commercial fruit and vegetable growers, marketing exporters, government regulatory agencies, and the scientific community. Fruit flies impose a considerable resource tax, and the ones who suffer range from shippers to end users. The demand for world-wide plant protection requires up-to-date research information. This book meets that need. This book contains the proceedings from the most recent International Symposium on Fruit Flies of Economic Importance. Here you will find the major presentations given at the symposium, with an added feature - overviews from experts on topics not covered directly by participants in the symposium, filling in gaps in the current literature. The resulting publication is the most up-to-date and readable text to be found anywhere on the subject of tephritids.
