The Future of India by Bimal Jalan Pdf

As Recently As A Decade Ago, The Prospect Of India Becoming A Developed Country Any Time Soon Seemed A Distant Possibility. Since Then, However, There Has Been A Sea Change In Our Own And The World&Rsquo;S Perception About Our Future. What Explains This Rising Tide Of Optimism? And How Far Is It Justified? In The Future Of India, Bimal Jalan, Former Governor Of The Reserve Bank Of India, Takes Up The Formidable Challenge Of Examining The Nuts And Bolts Of This Proposition. In His Thought-Provoking, Clear-Sighted Analysis, He Argues That It Is The Interface Between Politics, Economics And Governance, And Their Combined Effect On The Functioning Of Our Democracy, Which Will Largely Determine India&Rsquo;S Future. An Understanding Of This Interface Will Help Explain The Swings In India&Rsquo;S Political And Economic Fortunes Over The Past Decades, And Why The Promise Has Been Belied. In The Light Of Experience, Argues Jalan, There Is No Certainty That The Present Euphoria Will Last Unless There Is The Political Will To Seize The New Opportunities That Are Available. He Proceeds To Suggest Steps That Can Be Taken To Smoothen Our Path To Progress: Ways To Strengthen Parliament And The Judiciary; A Series Of Political Reforms That Would, Among Other Things, See Greater Accountability Among Ministers; And Effective Ways To Curb Corruption And Enhance Fiscal Viability. In All These There Is An Emphasis On The Pragmatic, Born Of Jalan&Rsquo;S Experience As An Administrator, Economist And Member Of Parliament. Contemporary And Topical, The Future Of India: Politics, Economics And Governance, Perhaps More Than Any Other Book On The Subject, Shows Just How A Future Close Enough To Be Seen Need Not Forever Remain Elusive To The Grasp.

The future of U.S.–India security cooperation by Šumit Ganguly,M. Chris Mason Pdf

This book deals with the evolution, current status and potential of U.S.-India strategic cooperation. From very modest beginnings, the U.S.-India strategic partnership has developed significantly over the last decade. In considerable part, this growth has stemmed from overlapping concerns about the rise and assertiveness of the People’s Republic of China, as well as the instability of Pakistan. Despite the emergence of this partnership, significant differences remain, some of which stem from Cold War legacies, others from divergent global strategic interests and institutional design. In spite of these areas of discord, the overall trajectory of the relationship appears promising. Increased cooperation and closer policy coordination underscore a deepening of the relationship, while fundamental differences in national approaches to strategic challenges demand flexibility and compromise in the future.

Indian Culture and India's Future by Michel Danino Pdf

Can Indian civilization be compared to a thousand-branched tree? What have been its outstanding achievements and its impact on the world? These are some of the questions this book asks. But it also deals with issues confronting more and more Indians caught in an identity crisis: What does it mean to be Indian? What is specific to the worldview developed by Indian culture? How has it dialogued with other cultures? Is it built on durable foundations, or is it little more than colourful religiosity and quaint but outdated customs? And what are the meaning and application of secularism and tolerance in the Indian context? The French-born author, who has been living in India for 33 years, argues that Indian culture is not some exotic relic of the past, but a dynamic force that still has a role to play in defining India's identity and cohesion, and in proposing solutions to today's global challenges. Written in a crisp and engaging style, this thought-provoking volume challenges received ideas on India's culture and invites us to think afresh. Future of Coal in India by Rahul Tongia, Anurag Sehgal, Puneet Kamboj Pdf

Mark Twain observed, “I'm in favour of progress; it's change I don't like.” Coal dominates Indian energy because it’s available domestically and cheap (especially without a carbon tax). If the global focus is on the energy transition, how does India ensure a just transition? Managing winners and losers will be the single largest challenge for India’s energy policy. Coal is entrenched in a complex ecosystem. In some states, it’s amongst the largest contributors to state budgets. The Indian Railways, India’s largest civilian employer, is afloat because it overcharges coal to offset under-recovery from passengers. Coal India Limited, the public sector miner that produces 85% of domestic coal, is the world’s largest coal miner. But despite enormous reserves, India imports about a quarter of consumption. On the flip side, coal faces inevitable pressure from renewable energy, which is the cheapest option for new builds. However, there is significant coal-based power capacity already in place, some of which is underutilized, or even stranded. Low per-capita energy consumption means India must still grow its energy supply. Before India can phase out coal, it must first achieve a plateau of coal. How this happens cost-effectively and with least resistance isn’t just a technical or economic question, it depends on the political economy of coal and its alternatives. Some stakeholders want to kill coal. A wiser option may be to first clean it up, instead of wishing it away. Across 18 chapters, drawing from leading experts in the field, we examine all aspects of coal’s future in India. We find no easy answers, but attempt to combine the big picture with details, bringing them together to offer a range of policy options.

India by Bimal Jalan Pdf

Bimal Jalan’s formidable analysis of the last four decades of India’s economic journey illuminates the nation’s transition from a strictly regulated, slow-growth state enterprise to one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Dr Jalan has had a ringside view of financial governance during his long and distinguished career, which included stints as Union Finance Secretary and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Drawing on this vast experience he compares two distinct periods: 1980–2000 and 2000–15, to examine the core changes and their significance, and considers their lessons for the immediate future. Dr Jalan suggests six critical issues where change can make a difference: revisit the anti-defection law so parties that join a coalition cannot defect without having to seek re-election; make the states—rather than the centre—responsible for financial development programmes and poverty-alleviation schemes; establish rules to make Parliament’s proceedings orderly and purposeful; ensure a stable and competitive economic environment; make sure ministries are accountable for actual performance; and, finally, rationalize the system of delivery of public services to persons below the poverty line. With such measures, India can become one of the fastest-growing emerging global powers and ensure that the benefits of such growth reach all her people.
