The Future of U.S.-Korea-Japan Relations by Tʻae-hyo Kim,Brad Glosserman Pdf

"This book does not argue for stronger security ties among the three countries based solely on a shared understanding of the threats posed by North Korea. Nor does it look toward containment of a rising China or resurgent Russia for its strategic rationale. Rather, the authors argue for broadening the foundation on which the three nations' ties rest. A better understanding of the complex weave of interests and values that binds the United States, South Korea, and Japan will stabilize the relationships and make them more resilient and adaptable to future developments."--BOOK JACKET.

The Future of Korea-Japan Relations by Robert Dujarric Pdf

On December 5, 1997, Hudson Institute and the East Asian Security Study Group held a conference on Japan and Korea's future. The focus of the conference was to survey the state of Japanese-Korean relations and analyze how they would evolve in the future. In the two and a half years since the symposium took place the pace of the improvement of Korean-Japanese relations has been dramatic. Very few observers in late 1997, even the most optimistic ones, would have predicted that relations between the two nations would improve as rapidly as they did. Though much remains to be done, the trend line has been very impressive. Funded by the Center for Global Partnership of the Japan Foundation, these essays will help scholars and policy makers gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding ties between Japan and Korea. Contributors include Gary L.Geipel (Hudson Institute) Han Taejoon and Kim Taehyun (Chung-Ang University, Seoul), Hattori Tamio (Doshisha University, Kyoto), Kohari Sususmu (Universityof Shizuoka), Lee Sook-Jong (Sejong Institute, Sungnam City), Murooka Tetsuo (National Institute of Defense Studies, Tokyo), Nagashima Akihisa, (Council on Foreign Relations and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies), Otsuka Umio (Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces), and Yamaguchi Noboru, (Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces and current military attachi in Washington, DC).

The Japan–South Korea Identity Clash by Brad Glosserman,Scott A. Snyder Pdf

Japan and South Korea are Western-style democracies with open-market economies committed to the rule of law. They are also U.S. allies. Yet despite their shared interests, shared values, and geographic proximity, divergent national identities have driven a wedge between them. Drawing on decades of expertise, Brad Glosserman and Scott A. Snyder investigate the roots of this split and its ongoing threat to the region and the world. Glosserman and Snyder isolate competing notions of national identity as the main obstacle to a productive partnership between Japan and South Korea. Through public opinion data, interviews, and years of observation, they show how fundamentally incompatible, rapidly changing conceptions of national identity in Japan and South Korea—and not struggles over power or structural issues—have complicated territorial claims and international policy. Despite changes in the governments of both countries and concerted efforts by leading political figures to encourage U.S.–ROK–Japan security cooperation, the Japan–South Korea relationship continues to be hobbled by history and its deep imprint on ideas of national identity. This book recommends bold, policy-oriented prescriptions for overcoming problems in Japan–South Korea relations and facilitating trilateral cooperation among these three Northeast Asian allies, recognizing the power of the public on issues of foreign policy, international relations, and the prospects for peace in Asia.

U.S.-Japan Relations by Ronald A. Morse Pdf

The U.S.-Japan relationship has emerged as the free world's most important bilateral relationship from the standpoint of economics and politics and increasingly security as well. Together, the two countries can make unparalleled contributions to global peace, stability and economic development. Operating independently, neither can successfully address the issues facing the future of the Pacific Basin community. Together and in cooperation they can have a major impact. The essays in this volume focus on the goals of putting reality into perspective and suggesting modest, but visionary, recommendations for the future. Contents: Formulating an American Agenda for Asia, by Robert A. Scalapino; A Japanese Agenda for Asian Politics and Security, Seizaburo Sato; The Economics of U.S.-Japan Relations in the Asia-Pacific Region, by Edward Lincoln; Reorienting the Japanese Economy for the Future, by Yutaka Kosai; and Japanese-American Defense Policies for a Post-Reagan Era, by John Endicott. Japanese Public Sentiment on South Korea by Tetsuro Kobayashi,Atsushi Tago Pdf

The contributors to this book demonstrate empirically how Japanese public opinion is formed amid strained Japan–South Korea relations. Studying public opinion in Japan and South Korea is critically important for exploring the causes and consequences of the deterioration of the relationship between the two countries. Japan–South Korea relations are at their worst level since World War II. Faced with North Korea’s nuclear threat and China’s regional and global advances, Japan and South Korea are each allied with the US and function as key stabilizers within the Asia–Pacific "Pax Americana." These relations play a decisive role in East Asia’s international security. The contributors explore a variety of social scientific methodologies—both conventional quantitative surveys and experiments, as well as quantitative text analyses of published books and computational analyses of social media data—to disentangle the dynamic relationship between Japanese public opinion and Japan–South Korea relations. An invaluable resource for scholars of East Asian regional security issues.

From Normalization to Reconciliation. The Japan-Korea Case by Britta Kistenich Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - Region: Far East, grade: 1,0, Korea University, Seoul (Graduate School of International Studies), course: Korea-Japan Relations, language: English, abstract: More than five decades ago, Japan and the Republic of Korea (in the following "Korea" or "South Korea") normalized their relation. Much time has passed, but frictions continue to strain relations every once in a while, usually due to history-related issues. This casts doubt on the claim that normalization has brought with it reconciliation. Like MORRIS-SUZUKI stated, Japan and Korea have not been able to achieve more than "a "thin" and ultimately very fragile form of reconciliation" yet. Thus, the main questions of this paper are: Is "thick" reconciliation between Japan and Korea desirable, let alone possible? How can such a reconciliation be achieved? Why is history still a problem? To answer these question, the paper is structured as following: First, the meaning of reconciliation will be discussed. Based on this the main part analyses and discusses reconciliation between Japan and Korea by explaining the history "problem", exploring conditions and ways for "thick" reconciliation and assessing the possibility of achieving "thick" reconciliation in the future. Lastly, the conclusion summarizes and assesses the findings of this paper.

Korean-Japanese-American Triangle by Yong-Ok Park,Rand Corporation Pdf

"This paper discusses the current problems and likely future prospects of Japanese-Korean security cooperation in light of the history of Japanese-Korean relations, and the current political-military situation in Northeast Asia. It also considers the role the United States plays in the region and the separate security pacts it maintains with the two countries. The author suggests that the establishment of official, direct security ties between Korea and Japan seems unlikely in the near future but could be facilitated by U.S. efforts to strengthen Sino-American-Japanese security cooperation."--Rand abstracts.

The Future of the Korean Peninsula by Mason Richey,Jagannath P. Panda,David A. Tizzard Pdf

This book considers both Koreas - North Korea and South Korea - to examine possible pathways for the years leading up to 2032 and beyond, thus offering a composite picture of Korea and its strategic relevance in Asia and the world at large. Through a combined South-North Olympic team and an effort of jointly hosting the Games, Republic of Korea president Moon Jae-in has marked the year 2032 as special in the future of the Korean Peninsula. Although the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has expressed scepticism about a combined hosting of the Games, the expectation in Korea is that this event will underline the shared destiny of the people inhabiting the peninsula and realign two states still caught in an ideologically fraught civil conflict that is one of the last vestiges of the Cold War. Chapters begin with a brief historical review and analysis of the present, before moving to consider how these will shape the next decade, drawing comparative and complementary analyses. No matter how contrasting the contemporary trajectories of both North and South Korea might appear, ‘Korea’ as a singular entity is an old concept still containing great possibilities. As the ongoing inter-Korean reconciliation process underscores, the futures of North and South Korea can be found in a complementary singular Korea, which would again represent an important political, strategic, cultural, and social space in Asia. An evaluation of the future trajectory, social awareness and perception of the Koreas, this book offers a valuable contribution to the study of North and South Korea and Asian Politics.
