The Future of South America (Classic Reprint) by Roger Ward Babson Pdf

Excerpt from The Future of South America Owing to the many exceedingly useful books on Latin America already published, I hesitate somewhat in preparing another. Most if not all of the books now issued, however, are written either for the traveler or the historian, without special appeal to commercial and industrial interests. In view of this I have, during the past few years, been systematically collecting information regarding Latin America which should be of service to those looking at this continent from a moneymaking, rather than from an historical, point of view. Although I have personally visited most of the countries of South America, I do not pose as a traveler. My visits have been short, on strictly business missions, and some of the cities about which I have written pages I have been in but a short time. Therefore I do not attempt to compete with the seasoned traveler nor the man who has spent many years in these southern republics. On the other hand, experience with statistics has taught me that often the man who sees countries at a distance, one in comparison with another, gets a truer perspective than one who has spent his life in a given spot. Getting Together With Latin America (Classic Reprint) by A. Hyatt Verrill Pdf

Excerpt from Getting Together With Latin America IN preparing this book no attempt has been made to go into all the details of Latin Ameri can trade, and other conditions, or to prepare a complete and analytical treatise on our past, present and future relations with the republics of South and Central America. To do that would require not one, but many, volumes, each far more comprehensive than the present work, for an entire book might be devoted to the business conditions in each republic. Al though conditions, customs and affairs differ greatly in the various countries of Latin America, yet the same generalities prevail, with but few exceptions, and I have endeavored to treat of matters in a broad and comprehensive manner without the finer distinctions which would relate to individual republics. Across Unknown South America, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by A. Henry Savage-Laondor Pdf

Excerpt from Across Unknown South America, Vol. 1 of 2 South America is, to my mind, the Coming Conti nent -the Continent of the future. Everybody knows the wealth of the Argentine, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia; but the interior of Brazil, the largest and richest country of all, not unlike forbidden Tibet, was perhaps better known a century or two ago than now. Few people realize that Brazil is larger than the United States of North America, Germany, Portugal, and a few other countries taken together. The interior is practically a term incognita - although the ancient Jesuits and, at a later date, escaped slaves and native rubber collectors have perhaps found their way inland to a considerable distance. South American Life by Ethlyn T. Clough Pdf

Excerpt from South American Life: An Account of Past and Contemporary Conditions and Progress in South America Our apology for presenting this book is not that so little has been written about Latin America, but that so much literature on this wonderfully interesting country exists that it is practically impossible to get in concise form, and brief enough to be of use to a student, the important information necessary to an intelligent understanding of the subject. Many books have been written about South America - some of them by enthusiastic tourists who may have stayed but a night in each of its fascinating old cities, and have filled in their impressions thus formed with information gathered second-hand from other books and marvelous tales. Other volumes have been written by conscientious investigators like the late William Elroy Curtis, who prepared for his newspaper and magazine articles so much informing and interesting material about the countries of Latin America, more purely descriptive, however, than the student cares for. And still other volumes have been written by authoritative and long-time residents, which, while they are all that can be desired in the information they afford, are usually on a single Republic, in which the writer happens to have spent his life; and to get a comprehensive knowledge of all the Latin American Republics, one would have to read many books. The Republics of Central, and South America, Their Resources, Industries, Sociology and Future (Classic Reprint) by C. Reginald Enock Pdf

Excerpt from The Republics of Central, and South America, Their Resources, Industries, Sociology and Future Since the publication of the first edition of the present work, there has been comparatively little change in the general circumstances of the Latin American republics. Political and social development is Slow in such com munities, notwithstanding frequent - and often violent change of government, whilst trade activities (often erro neously held to be synonymous with economic growth) have fluctuated in sympathy with general world-conditions. In the Great War the majority of the Latin American States Showed their sympathy with the Allied cause, both realising its justice and displaying their worldly wisdom. Some, however, remained neutral, and there were not wanting certain adverse elements. The populations of these lands increase slowly, except as regards those few into which European immigration is more marked. With regard to the needful uplifting of the great poor and illiterate bulk of folk, which involves all but a relatively small pro portion of the inhabitants of the Central and South American republics, with Mexico, it cannot be said that their rulers have in general awakened to the fact that this is the main problem of government. There is, however, some improving tendency as regards education and the status of the manual worker; but, on the other hand, industrial unrest and the growth of revolutionary socialistic doctrine more than keep pace, as is inevitable, with this growth. In the field of manufacturing industry home manufacture as against importation shows some increase, but the foreign merchant may nevertheless draw some satisfaction from the increased demand by a growing wealthy native class for articles of foreign luxury. The Latin American States cannot expect to become great by reason of commercial resources, as fully discussed in this book; but so far those elements which may make for a truer civilisation in this part of the world emerge but slowly. However, the general conditions, physical and commercial, of these little-understood nations are full of interest, and especially so to the British and North American people; a fact which is borne out by the constant demand for books dealing therewith in England and the United States. Excerpt from The States of South America, 1920: Land of Opportunity, a Complete Geographical, Descriptive, Economic and Commercial Survey The fact that the Republic of Guatemala is the most important State of Central America, and the probable federation of the States of the Isthmus, have made the inclusion of a description of this country and its resources, together with an account of the first steps taken towards the union of all the adjoining Republics, seem not only advisable but necessary in order to give a clear account of the conditions and trend of events in Central America, which is slowly following the same line of pro gress as South America, and is but another indi cation of the general prosperity of the great States of this continent. South American Problems (Classic Reprint) by Robert E. Speer Pdf

Excerpt from South American Problems We call the South American people a Latin people. In part they are. The foreign blood that is in them is for the most part Latin blood. The upper class is dominantly and sometimes purely of Latin blood. But a great proportion of South American blood is not Latin but Indian. Nevertheless, the charm of the Latin inheritance is over the whole continent and no one can visit it and not come away without grateful memories of a warm-hearted, quick-minded, high-spirited people, citizens of a mighty land and forerunners of a mighty future. And the easy course for one who is asked to present his impressions is to picture the surface life of these nations and pass by the great political and intellectual and moral problems which they are facing. This easy course is not the course which can secure much help for South America and it cannot carry us very far toward a worthy understanding of our own duty. The only things of real interest are, first, the facts as they are, and second, what the facts can and ought to be. We make no real headway by evasion and concealment, by rosy deception and smooth flatteries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
