The Galvanic Circuit Investigated Mathematically (Classic Reprint) by Georg Simon Ohm Pdf

Excerpt from The Galvanic Circuit Investigated Mathematically Memoir based on Three Laws. Three laws, of which the first expresses the mode of distribution of the electricity within one and the same body; the second, the mode of dispersion of the electricity in the surrounding atmosphere; and the third, the mode of appearance of the electricity at the place of contact of two heterogene ous bodies, forms the basis of the entire Memoir, and at the same time contains everything that does not lay claim to being completely established. The two latter are purely experimental laws; but the first from its nature is, in part at least, theoretical. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1891 edition. Excerpt: ... THE VOLTAIC CIRCUIT. A. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE DIFFUSION OF ELECTRICITY. 1. A property of bodies, called into activity under certain circumstances, and which we call electricity, manifests itself in space, by the bodies which possess it, and which on that account are termed electric, either attracting or repelling one another. In order to investigate the changes which occur in the electric condition of a body A, in a perfectly definite manner, this body is each time brought, under similar circumstances, into contact with a second movable body of invariable electrical condition, called the Electroscope, and the force with which the electroscope is repelled or attracted by the body is determined. This force is termed the electroscopic force (potential) of the body A; and to distinguish whether it is attractive or repulsive, we place before the expression for its measure the sign ] in the one case, and--in the other. The same body A may also serve to determine the electroscopic force in various parts of the same body. For this purpose we take the body A of very small dimensions, so that when we bring it into contact with the part to be tested of any third body, it may from its smallness be regarded as a substitute for this part; then its electroscopic force, measured in the way described, will, when it happens to be different at the various places, make known the relative difference with regard to electricity between these places. The intention of the preceding explanations is to give a simple and determinate signification to the expression "electroscopic force;" it does not come within the limits of our plan to take notice either of the greater or less practicability of this process, nor to compare inter se the various possible modes...

The Second Physicist by Christa Jungnickel,Russell McCormmach Pdf

This book explores the rise of theoretical physics in 19th century Germany. The authors show how the junior second physicist in German universities over time became the theoretical physicist, of equal standing to the experimental physicist. Gustav Kirchhoff, Hermann von Helmholtz, and Max Planck are among the great German theoretical physicists whose work and career are examined in this book. Physics was then the only natural science in which theoretical work developed into a major teaching and research specialty in its own right. Readers will discover how German physicists arrived at a well-defined field of theoretical physics with well understood and generally accepted goals and needs. The authors explain the nature of the work of theoretical physics with many examples, taking care always to locate the research within the workplace. The book is a revised and shortened version of Intellectual Mastery of Nature: Theoretical Physics from Ohm to Einstein, a two-volume work by the same authors. This new edition represents a reformulation of the larger work. It retains what is most important in the original work, while including new material, sharpening discussions, and making the research more accessible to readers. It presents a thorough examination of a seminal era in physics.

A Short History of Circuits and Systems by Franco Maloberti,Anthony C. Davies Pdf

After an overview of major scientific discoveries of the 18th and 19th centuries, which created electrical science as we know and understand it and led to its useful applications in energy conversion, transmission, manufacturing industry and communications, this Circuits and Systems History book fills a gap in published literature by providing a record of the many outstanding scientists, mathematicians and engineers who laid the foundations of Circuit Theory and Filter Design from the mid-20th Century. Additionally, the book records the history of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society from its origins as the small Circuit Theory Group of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), which merged with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) to form IEEE in 1963, to the large and broad-coverage worldwide IEEE Society which it is today. Many authors from many countries contributed to the creation of this book, working to a very tight time-schedule. The result is a substantial contribution to their enthusiasm and expertise which it is hoped that readers will find both interesting and useful. It is sure that in such a book omissions will be found and in the space and time available, much valuable material had to be left out. It is hoped that this book will stimulate an interest in the marvellous heritage and contributions that have come from the many outstanding people who worked in the Circuits and Systems area.

The Language of Physics by Elizabeth Garber Pdf

This work is the first explicit examination of the key role that mathematics has played in the development of theoretical physics and will undoubtedly challenge the more conventional accounts of its historical development. Although mathematics has long been regarded as the "language" of physics, the connections between these independent disciplines have been far more complex and intimate than previous narratives have shown. The author convincingly demonstrates that practices, methods, and language shaped the development of the field, and are a key to understanding the mergence of the modern academic discipline. Mathematicians and physicists, as well as historians of both disciplines, will find this provocative work of great interest.
