The Gardener, 1870 by William Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from The Gardener, 1870: A Magazine of Horticulture and Floriculture The practice generally pursued is, to select a quantity of the finest of the earliest-ripened sets at the end of the year, which, even in a cool place, will then be starting into growth. These are potted singly into small pots, rubbing off all the buds except the earliest and strongest terminal one, and are then placed in a pit or any other structure where they can have a temperature of 55 and a slight bottom-heat. Here they soon start into growth, and when 3 or 4 inches high, they are shifted into 8-inch pots, in which they mature their crop. The soil used should be free, and water should be supplied moderately, or the tendency will be towards a drawn and sickly growth. As the tubers become fit for table they should be kept dry, otherwise they will be watery and insipid. In this way an early crop or two come in early before those in pits and frames are ready. The Gardener, 1871 by David Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from The Gardener, 1871: A Magazine of Horticulture and Floriculture Rhododendrons, the pride of European gardens, as they are of their native wilds - so wrote the great Loudon nearly fifty years ago, when very few species or varieties were either known or cultivated in Europe and even many of these, though deeply interesting and worthy of careful cultivation, by no means conspicuous or striking as decorative plants. The gorgeous Indian R. Arboreum was but recently introduced, and had not yet bloomed in this country, though wondrous things were said of its tree - habit and dark-crimson blossoms and as yet the still popular R. Ponticum, Oatawbiense, Caucasicum, maxi mum, ferrugineum, and hirsutum, and a few of their varieties, very nearly made up the list of what we may term showy sorts, though all were worthy of the high praise which was accorded to them. Excerpt from The Gardener, 1869: A Magazine of Horticulture and Floriculture Mr Turner of Slough does not show his cards, but when he comes to play them on the green cloth or baize of the exhibition-table, no man deals more honourably, knows the game more thoroughly, holds more trump cards, or scores the honours more frequently. The Gardener, 1873 by David Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from The Gardener, 1873: A Magazine of Horticulture and Floriculture In our shrubberies and pleasure-grounds it is a very neat, some what slow - growing plant, with a dense conical habit of growth, the foliage very short, thickly set on the branchlets, and of a peculiar and pleasing glaucous-grey colour. It is a most effective lawn specimen shrub, contrasting well with the more sombre-foliaged Conifers, and well worthy of extensive introduction among choice decorative plants. It is found to succeed best where the soil is deep and rich, and requires a well-sheltered situation. A superb variety of recent introduction appropriately named stricta, differs from the species in having a narrower conical habit, tapering up to a sharp point, with the branches more compressed, and altogether more rigid and formal in its appearance 3 is admirably adapted for small geometric gardens, or for terraces, and lawns of limited extent. It is equally hardy with the species, and well deserves the attention of collectors of really handsome shrubs. The Gardener, 1831 by David Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from The Gardener, 1831: A Magazine of Horticulture and Floriculture According to my ideas every border should at least be 20 feet wide, and be cropped only to within 5 feet of the walls. This would allow ample space for the roots of the fruit-trees, and also admit of that portion of the border devoted to vegetable culture occasionally being double-dug - which operation would greatly benefit both the vegetables and the trees, as the digging would be a mild form of root-pruning the latter. The main path would of course be in front of the border, but a light ungravelled path would of necessity be made as near the walls as the trees would admit. These paths, composed of the same soil as the borders, if not trampled too solidly, or much wheeled upon, do not appear to injuriously affect the trees 3 but where it can be man aged, I should advise the use of large square paving-tiles, if for clean liness' sake alone. They could either be laid down closely, to admit of being wheeled upon, or they may be short distances apart, in the way of stepping-stones.
