Six Georgian Poets by Gaga Lomidze Pdf

This anthology, the fourteenth volume in the present series, brings us the work of six leading poets in what has been dubbed 'the Gagarin Generation'. Yuri Gagarin, the first astronaut, was an international celebrity and a hero of the Soviet Bloc. His space journey was subversively interpreted by some as a daring breakout towards freedom. The generation of people born into a transitional era of growing resistance to the strictures of Soviet rule, a generation that challenged entrenched conformity of thought and action, is represented here by a diverse set of voices, each of which speaks out of an experience both personal and collective, giving us a rare insight into a rich cultural and literary heritage that still awaits full discovery in English.

T. S. Eliot in Context by Jason Harding Pdf

T. S. Eliot's work demands much from his readers. The more the reader knows about his allusions and range of cultural reference, the more rewarding are his poems, essays and plays. This book is carefully designed to provide an authoritative and coherent examination of those contexts essential to the fullest understanding of his challenging and controversial body of work. It explores a broad range of subjects relating to Eliot's life and career; key literary, intellectual, social and historical contexts; as well as the critical reception of his oeuvre. Taken together, these chapters sharpen critical appreciation of Eliot's writings and present a comprehensive, composite portrait of one of the twentieth century's pre-eminent men of letters. Drawing on original research, T. S. Eliot in Context is a timely contribution to an exciting reassessment of Eliot's life and works, and will provide a valuable resource for scholars, teachers, students and general readers.

Georgian Poetry, 1920-1922 (Classic Reprint) by Edward Howard Marsh Pdf

Excerpt from Georgian Poetry, 1920-1922 This, in the words of Pirate Smee, was a kind of a compliment, but it was also, to quote the same hero, galling; and I have wished for an opportunity of disowning the pretension which I found attributed to me of setting up as a pundit, or a pontifi, or a Petronius Arbiter; for I have neither the sure taste, nor the exhaustive reading, nor the ample leisure which would be necessary in any such role. The origin of these books, which is set forth in the memoir of Rupert Brooke, was simple and humble. I found, ten years ago, that there were a number of writers doing work which appeared to me extremely good, but which was narrowly known and I thought that anyone, however unprofessional and meagrely gifted, who presented a conspectus of it in a challenging and manageable form might be doing a good turn both to the poets and to the reading public. So, I think I may claim, it proved to be. The first volume seemed to supply a want. It was eagerly bought the con tinuation of the affair was at once taken so much for granted as to be almost unavoidable; and there hasbeen no break in the demand for the successive books. If they have won for themselves any position, there is no possible reason except the pleasure they have given. Having entered upon a course of disclamation, I should like to make a mild protest against a further charge that Georgian Poetry has merely encouraged a small clique of mutually indistinguishable poetasters to abound in their own and each other's sense or nonsense. It is natural that the poets of a generation should have points in common but to my fond eye those who have graced these collections look as diverse as sheep to their shepherd, or the members of a Chinese family to their uncle; and if there is an allegation which I would deny wit/j both bandr, it is this: that an insipid sameness is the chief characteristic of an anthology which offers - to name almost at random seven only out of forty (oh ominous academic number - the work of Messrs. Abercrombie, Davies, de la Mare, Graves, Lawrence, Nichols and Squire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Georgian Poets by Lynn Parker,Rennie Parker Pdf

The Georgian movement in literature began as a reaction against late Victorian sensibilities, but world events soon turned this nascent movement upside down, killing two of its most famous members and dispersing the rest amidst a harsher intellectual climate. This introductory study helps to set the Georgians in their original context, and revises the critical balance in favour of three lesser known writers whose contribution to early twentieth-century letters was viewed as significant before the 1930s. The author makes use of archive sources and reviews as wellas recent historicist accounts, bringing these engaging, mysterious and humane writers into focus for the present time.
